A geyser (storage water heater) usually pops, rumbles, crackles or gurgles because sediment or lime scale has collected on the tank floor or heating elements. Water trapped beneath the deposit turns to bubbles and steam during a heating cycle, then breaks through the crust. Gas burners, electric elements and some heat-pump components can all produce different sounds. Noise from the temperature-and-pressure (T&P) relief-valve outlet is a more urgent issue: it can indicate thermal-expansion pressure and should be handled by a licensed plumbing contractor.
What does a popping or rumbling geyser usually mean?
The sound’s location and timing provide the quickest diagnosis. A noise from the tank during heating is commonly sediment or scale. A noise at the relief-valve discharge pipe, especially with water draining, points to pressure. Fans and compressors on heat-pump models may be normal, while a new knocking sound, leaks or poor heating warrants inspection.

Rumbling, popping or crackling during heating
On a gas storage heater, the burner heats water through a layer of sediment. Droplets trapped in the deposit boil and escape as steam bubbles, producing a percolating or popping sound. Electric tanks can make a similar rumble when scale coats an immersed heating element.
Popping at the relief-valve pipe
If the sound comes from the T&P valve or its discharge pipe, or the pipe is releasing water, thermal expansion may be raising pressure in a closed plumbing system. GE Appliances states that this condition is unacceptable and that the outlet must never be plugged or capped. A plumbing contractor should correct the pressure problem.

Sounds from a heat-pump unit
Heat-pump geysers use fans and compressors that make operating sounds. A persistent change, abnormal knocking or severe vibration is not something to dismiss; arrange a service inspection.
How can I identify the source safely?
- Stand clear of hot surfaces and listen for whether the sound comes from the tank body, burner compartment, electric-element area, connecting pipes or relief-valve outlet.
- Note when it occurs: only during a heating cycle, while a hot-water tap is open, or continuously.
- Check around the base for water, rust or mineral staining. Inspect the relief-valve pipe for discharge, but do not touch a hot outlet.
- If the heater is gas-fired and you smell gas, leave the area, follow the appliance manual and your gas supplier’s emergency instructions, and do not attempt a repair.
- Do not remove an element, burner, anode or relief valve unless the model instructions and your training specifically support that work. Gas, electrical and pressure-valve repairs belong to qualified technicians.
Should I flush a noisy storage geyser?
Flushing is the standard first remedy when sediment is the likely cause. A. O. Smith’s procedure for a conventional storage tank is:

- Wait until the stored water has cooled enough to handle safely.
- Connect a suitable high-temperature hose to the drain valve and route it to an appropriate drain point.
- Open the drain valve and let the tank empty. Open a hot-water tap if the model’s instructions require air to enter the tank.
- Flush cold water through the tank until the discharge runs clear, while preventing scalding or flooding.
- Close the drain valve, remove the hose and reopen the cold-water supply.
- Open a hot tap until water flows steadily without air, confirming that the tank is full.
- Only then restore heat. An electric element can burn out if energized while exposed, and a gas burner should not fire an empty tank.
Use the heater’s own manual if its valve arrangement or flushing method differs. A water-heater flush kit or high-temperature drain hose is designed for this job. Flushing may reduce the noise without removing every hardened deposit; recurring scale often reflects hard water and may require water treatment or professional descaling.

Why would a new geyser make a crackling or gurgling sound?
A heater installed less than six months ago that produces crackling, gurgling or popping and releases green, blue or gray jelly-like beads may have aluminum hydroxide rather than ordinary sediment. A. O. Smith Technical Bulletin 14 associates this material with high-pH supply water reacting with an aluminum anode.
The bulletin describes flushing or deliming and replacing the aluminum anode with a compatible magnesium anode. Anode selection is model-specific, and the work requires ability equivalent to that of a licensed tradesperson. Do not remove the anode without confirming compatibility and safely isolating and draining the unit.
When is a popping geyser dangerous?
Sound alone is often a maintenance warning, but call a licensed plumber or qualified water-heater technician promptly for:

- Water discharging from the T&P relief-valve pipe or repeated pressure symptoms
- A gas smell, burner fault or combustion concern
- Electrical faults, repeated resets or exposed wiring
- A leaking, badly corroded or bulging tank
- Severe scale, an element or anode that must be removed, or any repair outside your competence
- Noise accompanied by poor heating, unusual vibration or a sudden change in operation
Never plug the relief-valve outlet to stop a drip. Blocking it removes a critical pressure-safety path and can create a much more serious hazard.
How can I stop the noise from returning?
If flushing provides only temporary relief, recurring hard-water scale is the likely reason. Bradford White recommends inhibiting scale with a water softener where water chemistry warrants it. Keep the tank’s maintenance schedule, inspect for leaks and have a technician check pressure regulation, the expansion arrangement and sacrificial anode at service visits. Tankless heaters need model-specific descaling rather than a storage-tank flush, so follow their manual.

Can a noisy geyser explode?
A rumble from sediment does not by itself mean an explosion is imminent. The serious warning is uncontrolled pressure, especially water escaping at the relief-valve outlet; leave that outlet unobstructed and obtain professional service.

Why does the noise stop when I turn off the heater?
Heating creates the boiling and steam-bubble action that moves through sediment or scale. When the heat source stops, that process stops too, although the deposit remains and can continue causing noise on the next cycle.

Brief installation-related sounds can occur, but crackling or gurgling with green, blue or gray gel-like material in the first six months suggests aluminum hydroxide. Have the anode and water chemistry assessed rather than assuming ordinary sediment.
Can I use vinegar to clean a noisy geyser?
Do not improvise a chemical treatment in a storage tank. Cleaning agents, deliming methods and anode changes must match the model and materials; use the manufacturer’s procedure or a qualified technician.
