The quickest way to narrow down the cause is to press Home, Menu, Volume, or Input while the screen is black. If the TV’s own menu or volume overlay appears, the display is still producing an image and the source, HDMI cable, port, receiver, soundbar, or signal path is more likely to be at fault. If the menus also disappear, test the TV itself before buying cables or parts.
What does “losing the picture” mean?

| Symptom | What it commonly indicates |
|---|---|
| Black screen for a few seconds, then recovery | HDMI handshake, cable integrity, output-format, bandwidth, or intermittent-port problem |
| “No Signal” appears | The TV is working but is not receiving a usable signal from the selected source |
| Sound continues while the picture disappears | Source or HDMI-video problem, backlight/display fault, or incompatible video format |
| Menus remain visible over a black picture | External source, cable, input, receiver, or switch is more likely than a dead panel |
| Menus also disappear | TV software, power, backlight, panel, main-board, or another internal fault |
| Picture becomes dim rather than black | Energy-saving settings, thermal behavior, or a failing backlight may be involved |
| Lines, blocks, or severe color distortion appear | Signal instability or a TV-side display-electronics or panel fault |
| The TV shows its logo or restarts | Power interruption, overheating, software crash, or internal hardware problem |
| Only one app or channel fails | App, network, antenna, coaxial, broadcaster, or provider issue rather than a general display failure |
The five-minute diagnosis
1. Check whether the TV can display its own controls
- Leave the TV on when the picture disappears.
- Press Home, Menu, Volume, or Input/Source.
- Switch to a built-in app or another input if possible.
If an overlay appears, the TV is capable of displaying graphics. That makes the connected source path the leading suspect, although it does not completely rule out an intermittent TV fault. If nothing appears, use the manufacturer’s picture test if you can access it. A television that repeatedly returns to its logo should be treated as restarting, not as a simple “No Signal” problem.
2. Confirm the input and source
Press Source, Input, or Home and select the HDMI port physically used by the device. Confirm that the cable box, console, streaming stick, computer, Blu-ray player, or receiver is powered on and has not frozen or gone to sleep. Incorrect input selection and a powered-off source are basic causes of a missing picture identified in manufacturer troubleshooting guidance from Samsung and Sony.

3. Reseat the HDMI cable
- Turn off the TV and source device.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Check for visible damage, looseness, bent components, or strain.
- Reconnect both ends firmly without forcing them.
- Turn the source and TV back on.
Do not aggressively wiggle a powered connector. If lightly moving the cable changes the picture, stop using that cable or port. Sony recommends reconnecting the HDMI cable and trying another cable if the problem continues; LG gives similar guidance.
4. Test a known-good HDMI cable
Use a short cable first so that cable length and in-wall wiring do not complicate the diagnosis. A replacement cable is a controlled test, not proof that every black screen needs an expensive cable.
- For many 1080p and 4K/60 Hz setups, a properly certified High Speed or Premium High Speed HDMI cable may be sufficient.
- For 4K/120 Hz gaming, VRR, HDR, eARC, or other high-bandwidth configurations, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI Certified cable rated up to 48 Gbps.
Do not treat “HDMI 2.1” alone as a guarantee. Match the cable to the resolution, refresh rate, HDR or VRR features, length, and installation. Official examples include Monoprice Premium High Speed cables, Monoprice Ultra High Speed cables, Belkin’s certified Ultra High Speed cable, and Cable Matters’ certified HDMI range. A cable that works at 1080p can still fail at 4K/120 Hz.

5. Try another HDMI port
Move the same source and cable to another compatible HDMI input, then select the new input on the TV. If the picture becomes stable, the original port may be damaged, worn, or unable to handle the selected format. Ports can have different capabilities: moving a console may solve the dropout but remove 4K/120 Hz, VRR, or eARC support.
6. Bypass receivers, soundbars, and switches
Connect the source directly to the TV, temporarily removing any:

If the direct connection is stable, add the removed devices back one at a time. The intermediary may have a cable, firmware, HDCP-handshake, bandwidth, or compatibility problem. If changing inputs temporarily restores the picture, that may simply force a new HDMI handshake rather than fix the underlying fault.
7. Perform a full power reset
- Turn off the TV and source.
- Unplug both from the wall.
- Wait about two minutes.
- Reconnect them and turn them on.
This follows Sony’s current no-picture guidance. A normal remote-control shutdown may leave equipment in standby. Restart cable boxes, streaming devices, receivers, and routers according to their own instructions, and never interrupt a firmware update. If power cycling only restores the picture temporarily, continue isolating the fault rather than treating it as a permanent repair.

Compare the affected device with a built-in TV app, another HDMI device, an antenna or cable channel, or a computer. This matrix helps identify the failing part:
| Test result | Most likely conclusion |
|---|---|
| Same source works with another cable | Original cable is defective, damaged, too long, or unsuitable for the format |
| Same source works on another port | Original port or a port-specific setting is suspect |
| Another source works on the same port | Original source or its cable is suspect |
| Every source fails | TV, power, software, or a common intermediary is more likely |
| Built-in apps work but HDMI sources fail | HDMI chain, source, cable, or input problem |
| Built-in apps also fail | TV software or hardware problem |
| Only live channels fail | Antenna, coaxial, splitter, tuner, or provider signal problem |
| Only one app fails | App, network, or streaming-service problem |
Use the TV’s picture test
A built-in picture test is one of the best ways to separate the TV from external equipment. Samsung’s support flow specifically recommends comparing the TV’s test image with other devices, cables, and ports.

- Stable test image: the TV’s basic display path is probably functioning; focus on sources, cables, ports, and intermediaries.
- Test image flickers, disappears, or is visibly damaged: a TV-side fault is more likely and service may be needed.
- The test cannot be displayed: follow the model-specific support process rather than assuming the panel alone is defective.
Check format compatibility and firmware
If dropouts occur during gaming, HDR playback, or resolution changes, temporarily simplify the signal:
- Set the source to 1080p or 4K/60 Hz.
- Turn off HDR, VRR, or 120 Hz one setting at a time.
- Use a short certified cable and connect directly to the TV.
- Restore features individually after the connection is stable.
If a lower format solves the problem, the likely issue is signal integrity, port capability, device compatibility, or an intermediary that cannot handle the selected mode. Lowering the resolution identifies the failure; it does not repair a defective TV.
Update the TV, source device, game console, streaming stick, receiver, soundbar, and computer graphics driver where relevant. Firmware can resolve HDMI compatibility and picture bugs, but it should not be the first response to a visibly damaged or loose cable. Manufacturer update procedures and menu labels vary by model.

- USES: Transmits audio and video from computer to HD display; great for showing movies on a big-screen HDTV, presenting work on a projector, or configuring a second monitor or mirrored displays
When the problem involves broadcast TV or streaming
Antenna, cable, or satellite
If menus and apps are stable but live channels fail, inspect the signal path:
- Tighten the coaxial connections.
- Replace visibly damaged coaxial cable.
- Temporarily remove unnecessary splitters, amplifiers, and adapters.
- Where the provider permits, connect the incoming cable directly to the receiver.
- Compare several channels and check for provider outages.
If some channels work while others break up, the problem is more likely signal strength, cabling, equipment, or the provider than the TV panel. Sony specifically recommends checking incoming connections, splitters, and other devices in the cable or satellite path.
Streaming apps
If only one streaming app loses its picture, check the TV’s home screen and other apps, restart the TV and router, test another app, and compare another device on the same network. A frozen app or network interruption can look like a display failure, but it will not normally make the TV’s own menus disappear. LG recommends restarting the TV and router in relevant network-connected troubleshooting situations.
Signs the television itself may be failing
A TV-side problem becomes more likely when:
- Every HDMI source, built-in app, and live channel fails.
- The TV’s menus or picture-test image also disappear.
- The TV repeatedly restarts or shows its logo.
- The problem worsens after the set has been running for a while.
- There are persistent lines, half-screen loss, color distortion, or a permanently dark region.
- The screen stays uniformly dark while sound continues, even after source isolation.
Possible causes include the backlight, panel electronics, timing-control circuitry, main board, power system, thermal protection, or software. These symptoms do not identify a specific failed component remotely.

You can check that the TV has a secure wall connection, try it without an overloaded power strip, and ensure that ventilation openings are not blocked or exposed to a heat source. Do not open the television. Internal power supplies can retain dangerous voltages after unplugging, and amateur board replacement can create shock, fire, warranty, and further-damage risks. A flashlight test that reveals a faint image on some LCD TVs is only an informal clue, not a definitive diagnosis.

When to stop troubleshooting
Arrange manufacturer or qualified repair support when the picture test fails, every source fails, the TV repeatedly restarts, an HDMI port is physically loose or damaged, or the set has suffered impact or liquid damage. If the TV is under warranty, contact the manufacturer or retailer before opening it or authorizing repair.
For an out-of-warranty set, compare the likely repair cost with its age, size, panel type, parts availability, and the price of a suitable replacement. There is no universal repair-versus-replace dollar threshold. A new cable is unlikely to help when the TV’s own test image is failing.
What to buy—and what not to buy
Buy only after the isolation tests point to the cable. Choose certification and required bandwidth rather than a large “8K” label or the highest price. For a typical 4K/60 Hz setup, a certified Premium High Speed cable may be appropriate. For 4K/120 Hz gaming, VRR, HDR, or eARC, choose a certified Ultra High Speed cable rated up to 48 Gbps.
Recommended Free Tools
Avoid unbranded cables with no visible certification, expensive surge protectors marketed as cures for HDMI dropouts, splitters or switches before a direct connection has been tested, and internal power-board kits for inexperienced users. Buying several accessories at once makes it impossible to tell which change fixed the problem.
