Redistribute the load
Place dry items in loose heaps evenly around the basket wall. Do not pack the tub tightly or wash a single item alone. Try a smaller load; for oversized, non-absorbent items such as jackets or small comforters, select Bulky Items/Sheets.
If the washer will not start or fill
Check power and the lid
- Make sure the lid is closed; the washer will not run with it open. Pauses can also occur during normal cycle phases.
- Use a grounded three-prong outlet. Do not use an adapter or extension cord.
- If the outlet, breaker, or fuse check does not resolve an ongoing power problem, the manual advises contacting an electrician. Do not open electrical components as a quick fix.
Check the water supply
- Confirm both hot- and cold-water faucets are fully on.
- Check that both fill hoses are connected and not kinked.
- Inspect the washer’s inlet screens for clogs. If cleaning requires disassembly beyond the manual’s instructions, stop and seek service.
Understand the water level
Clothes may not be fully submerged during Auto Sensing; the Use and Care Guide describes this as normal high-efficiency operation. The washer senses load size and adds water for that load. Choose Deep Water Wash when you want a higher water level. The guide cautions that manually adding water can lift laundry off the washplate and reduce cleaning effectiveness.

If clothes are wet or the washer will not drain or spin
Check the load, suds, and drain path
- Redistribute an unbalanced load and loosen tightly packed items.
- Check for a small object caught in the pump or between the basket and tub. Empty pockets before future loads; service may be needed to remove an object trapped inside.
- Excess detergent can create suds that interfere with draining and spinning.
- Check that the drain hose is not clogged or installed incorrectly. It should extend no more than 4.5 inches (114 mm) into the standpipe, should not be taped over the drain opening, and should be lowered if its end is more than 96 inches (2.4 m) above the floor.
Run the appropriate cycle
Redistribute wet laundry, then select Drain & Spin to remove extra water. If excess suds are present, run Rinse & Spin without adding detergent. The model guide associates a spin light that remains on with the washer failing to pump water out within 10 minutes.
If water is leaking
- Check that the washer is level and the load is not unbalanced or tightly packed.
- Tighten fill-hose connections and verify that all four flat hose washers are seated.
- Secure the drain hose to the drainpipe or laundry tub, but do not tape over the drain opening.
- Look for leaks or blockages in nearby household plumbing.
If the washer smells or leaves residue
Clean the washer at least once a month or every 30 wash cycles, whichever comes first. The model guide describes using the washer-cleaning cycle with an Affresh washer-cleaner tablet or following its stated bleach procedure. During that cleaning procedure, do not add detergent or other chemicals. Leave the lid open between uses so the washer can dry, measure detergent as directed, and remove laundry promptly after a cycle.

If the washer makes unusual sounds
Clicking or metallic sounds can come from loose objects in the drain system or clothing hardware touching the basket. Empty pockets; if an object is trapped inside the washer, service may be needed to remove it. Humming or gurgling while draining, and humming during sensing, are described as normal operating sounds in the model guide.
How to handle a flashing light or error code
Use the documentation for the exact WTW4816FW2 rather than a generic or front-load code list. Whirlpool’s general error-code guidance directs owners to the specific model’s Owner’s Manual because codes may not apply across models. Look up the full model number in Whirlpool’s manuals and literature. If the code persists or the manual does not explain it, contact Whirlpool support or a qualified repair professional; have the model and serial numbers ready.
