A coupe or martini glass covers cocktails served up, a rocks glass suits drinks over ice, and a highball handles long drinks. A smaller Nick & Nora is another option for served-up cocktails when you want a more compact bowl.
This is a guide to glass styles, not a list of nine tested product winners: the available sources describe categories and expert advice, but do not establish a current, comparable ranking of nine specific glasses.
Which cocktail glasses are worth prioritizing?
If cabinet space is limited, Giorgio Bargiani, Assistant Director of Mixology at Connaught Bar, recommends a martini or coupe glass and a rocks glass. Livingetc reports his suggested capacities as about 200 ml for the stemmed glass and no more than 350 ml for the rocks glass. Those are his home-bar recommendations, not universal specifications.
Choose additions according to what you make and how you serve it. A highball is useful for long drinks; a Nick & Nora offers a smaller stemmed format. Bon Appétit contributor and Pebble Bar head bartender Tim Sweeney notes that glassware affects the experience across the senses, not just presentation. That makes shape and handling relevant, but it does not mean there is one objectively best glass for every drink.

How the main glass styles differ
| Style | Shape and typical use | Capacity or practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Coupe | Stemmed glass with a shallow, rounded bowl; used for a range of cocktails served up. | Liquor.com describes coupe sizes from about five ounces to roughly twice that. Capacity varies by glass. |
| V-shaped martini | Stemmed glass with an angular, open bowl; a traditional presentation for martinis. | No single capacity is established by the cited guide. Its broad, open shape makes careful carrying sensible. |
| Nick & Nora | Smaller, bell-shaped stemware for served-up cocktails. | Liquor.com gives five to six ounces as a typical capacity and describes the inward-curving bowl as helpful in reducing sloshing while carrying. |
| Rocks | Short tumbler for drinks served over ice. | RIEDEL says its rocks glass is designed to accommodate standard and larger ice cubes; check the specifications of the exact glass you buy. |
| Highball | Tall glass for long drinks. | RIEDEL includes a Highball in its drink-specific collection and describes its design as accommodating standard and larger ice cubes. That claim applies to its design, not every highball. |
Capacities above are category descriptions or attributed advice, not fixed standards for every glass. The cited sources do not establish comparable durability tests, storage measurements, or care instructions across styles.
Choose by the way you serve the drink
For cocktails served up
“Served up” means the drink is chilled, strained, and presented without ice in the glass. Choose among the coupe, V-shaped martini glass, and Nick & Nora according to presentation and usable capacity. The coupe has a rounded, relatively shallow bowl; the martini glass has an open angular bowl; and the Nick & Nora is smaller and curves inward. If a brim-full pour or a wide bowl would be awkward in your setting, consider a smaller-capacity option.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
There is no universal winner among these formats. Liquor.com presents the choice between a coupe, a V-shaped glass, and a Nick & Nora as a matter of style and use preference. Its guide also traces the coupe to wine service and reports that Dale DeGroff popularized the Nick & Nora name after selecting glasses in the late 1980s that reminded him of small coupes shown in the 1934 film The Thin Man.
For drinks served over ice
A rocks glass is the short-tumbler choice. If you use large cubes or oversized ice, verify that the specific glass has enough room; RIEDEL makes that accommodation claim for its own rocks glass, not for the category as a whole.

For long drinks
A highball’s tall shape is suited to a long drink. As with a rocks glass, check the exact product dimensions and ice guidance rather than assuming every glass in the category has the same capacity or cube clearance.
What to check before buying a set
- Capacity: Compare the glass’s stated volume with your usual pour and the room needed for ice, if used. A category label alone does not guarantee a particular capacity.
- Shape and spill risk: Consider how wide or deep the bowl is and how easily you can carry it. The Nick & Nora’s inward curve is one design feature intended to help reduce sloshing.
- Serving style: Decide whether you need stemware for drinks served up, a tumbler for ice, or a tall glass for long drinks.
- Storage: Check dimensions and how the glasses fit your cabinet. The available sources do not provide comparative storage measurements.
- Set quantity and construction: Confirm the number of glasses and the material in the actual product listing; neither follows automatically from the style name.
- Care: Read the maker’s care instructions for the exact model. No cross-brand care comparison is established here.
RIEDEL’s Drink Specific Glassware collection is one example of a maker offering Highball, Rocks, and Nick & Nora types. Its category page supports the availability of those forms, not an endorsement of a particular model or a comparative claim about quality.

How many styles should a home bar have?
Start with the drinks you actually serve. Bargiani’s compact-bar advice points to one stemmed glass—martini or coupe—and a rocks glass. Add a highball if long drinks are common at your bar, or a Nick & Nora if you prefer its smaller bowl for served-up cocktails. You can also bend traditional presentation conventions: Bargiani says there is nothing wrong with adapting a drink to a guest’s tastes and habits.
The most useful purchase is therefore the glass that fits your serving habits, cabinet, and preferred pour—not necessarily the largest set or the most specialized shape.
