Where to Place a Space Heater—and Where Not to

Put a space heater on a stable, solid surface with at least 3 feet of clearance from anything combustible. Keep it away from beds, water, and high-traffic spots.

Place a portable space heater on a stable, level, solid surface, at least 3 feet from anything that can burn. Keep it away from beds and sleeping people, use a wall outlet for an electric model, and turn it off when you leave the room or go to sleep. The heater’s manual may require additional clearance or ventilation.

Where should a space heater go?

Choose an open spot on a stable, level, solid surface where the heater is unlikely to be bumped by people, children, pets, doors, or passing traffic. Keep combustible items at least 3 feet from every side. That includes curtains, bedding, clothing, paper, upholstered furniture, and other things that can burn.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises keeping portable heaters at least 3 feet from drapes, furniture, bedding, and other combustible material. Its January 2026 guidance also names beds, clothes, curtains, papers, and sofas. A CPSC staff assessment quotes UL 1278’s warning to keep cords, drapery, and furnishings 3 feet (0.9 m) from the front and away from the sides and rear. Check your heater’s own instructions for any added clearance requirements.

Where should you not put a space heater?

On a rug or carpet

Do not place a heater on a rug or carpet. CPSC guidance calls for a level, hard, nonflammable surface; the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) recommends a solid, flat surface. A heater on an unstable or unsuitable surface may tip over.

Near bedding, curtains, furniture, or other combustibles

Keep the full 3-foot clearance around the heater, not just in front of it. Do not let bedding, clothing, paper, curtains, sofas, or other combustible items encroach on that space.

Beside a bed or sleeping person

Do not position a heater close to someone who is sleeping, and do not leave it running while you sleep. Turn it off before going to bed.

Where it can be knocked over or exposed to water

Avoid busy walkways and other places where someone could bump the heater or its cord. Keep the unit away from water and use a stable, level location.

Where its power cord creates a hazard

For an electric heater, plug it directly into a wall outlet—not an extension cord or power strip. Keep the cord out from under rugs and carpeting. USFA also advises against plugging other devices into the same circuit as the heater because the circuit can overheat.

Are wall, window, or doorway distances universal?

The cited CPSC and USFA guidance establishes a 3-foot clearance from combustible materials, but it does not set one universal distance from walls, windows, doorways, or vents for every model. Follow the heater’s manual for its specific placement, clearance, and ventilation instructions rather than assuming one spacing rule applies to all units.

Instructions can vary in completeness. In a February 2024 preliminary assessment, CPSC staff examined ten portable electric heater samples and reported shortcomings in some warnings and instructions, including possible counterfeit certification markings. That limited sample does not establish that all heaters have inadequate instructions; it is a reason to read the warnings supplied with your particular product carefully.

Does the advice change for a fuel-burning heater?

Yes. The clearance and tip-over precautions still matter, but ventilation advice for fuel-burning heaters is different from advice for electric models. For unvented fuel-burning space heaters, CPSC’s 2003 guidance says to keep doors open to the rest of the house to help prevent pollutant buildup and promote proper combustion, and to follow the manufacturer’s directions for sufficient combustion air. CPSC also says gas and kerosene heaters should be inspected annually. Follow the specific heater’s instructions; do not apply fuel-burning ventilation guidance to an electric heater.

Why careful placement matters

CPSC estimates that portable heaters, including electric space heaters, were associated with an average of 1,600 fires, 70 deaths, and 150 injuries per year in the United States during 2020–2022. Those are estimates for that period, not counts for 2026. In a December 2003 release, then-CPSC Chairman Hal Stratton said, “CPSC has worked with industry to improve safety standards for space heaters, but consumers must exercise care in how they use space heaters.”

USFA recommends choosing a heater tested by a recognized testing laboratory and looking for an automatic tip-over shutoff. These features do not replace safe placement or the operating instructions. CPSC also recommends smoke alarms on every level and inside bedrooms, and carbon monoxide alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas.
