A mobile woodworking cabinet can be built for heavy shop tools, but “heavy duty” is not a verified load rating. The cabinet, joinery, caster plates and fasteners, selected casters, floor, and load distribution all affect how it performs. Choose components for the fully loaded build, and make the cart stable before operating a machine on it.
Use a researched project as a construction example, not as proof that a different cabinet has the same capacity. Decide whether the cart is for storage or will support an operating machine, then plan the structure, storage, caster arrangement, and machine retention around that use.
Plan for the Intended Use
Start by listing the tools or supplies the cart will carry and deciding whether you need drawers, open shelves, or both. Drawers add organization but also add weight and require suitable slides. A machine cart needs additional attention to stability and to keeping the machine from sliding if a caster hits an obstruction.
Do not assign a safe capacity based only on plywood thickness or a caster label. The reviewed plans offer construction examples, not an engineered or tested rating for a cabinet of your own dimensions.

Compare the Main Design Choices
| Choice | What to consider | Example from the plans |
|---|---|---|
| Carcass | Plywood thickness, panel support, joinery, and resistance to racking | King’s Fine Woodworking describes an all-3/4-inch-plywood cabinet. Woodcraft’s turning cart uses tongue-and-groove joints, face frames, and an intermediate back panel to resist racking. |
| Storage | Open shelves are simpler; drawers add organization, weight, and slide requirements | Published examples use metal, self-closing, or full-extension slides. Choose slides for the actual drawer and contents. |
| Casters | Locking or non-locking, swivel arrangement, model rating, plate size, and mounting | A Strong-Tie-hosted plan uses four locking swivel casters plus two swivel casters; Woodcraft’s planer cart uses swivel casters at the front and fixed casters at the rear. |
| Machine retention | How the machine is secured while the cart moves | Woodcraft recommends screwing the planer to its cart or using perimeter cleats to help prevent sliding. |
| Work use | A storage cart has different stability needs from a stand for an operating machine | The cited plans show project-specific uses and details, not a universal design rule. |
Build the Carcass and Reinforce Caster Mounts
Several researched projects use 3/4-inch plywood for the case. That is an example, not a capacity guarantee. Woodcraft’s planer cart uses a plywood case with a solid-wood face frame, rabbets for the case and back, and a dry fit to check the back panel before glue-up. Its turning accessory cart uses an intermediate back panel to help prevent racking.
The Strong-Tie-hosted 2018 workbench plan glues and screws the sides and middle divider to the bottom, adds center supports, and leaves the top unglued so it can be replaced. These are project-specific approaches; adapt dimensions and joints to your own design rather than copying them as a rated plan.
Pay particular attention to the load path from the cabinet through the caster plates and fasteners to the floor. The Strong-Tie-hosted plan adds a scrap layer of 3/4-inch plywood at caster locations and attaches casters with connector screws. Woodcraft’s planer cart attaches its casters with 5/16 × 1-inch lag screws. These details belong to their respective designs and do not establish a universal mounting method.

Match the whole caster system and its attachment to the completely loaded cabinet; do not assume a caster’s stated rating is the rating of the finished cabinet. Locking casters can help keep a parked cart in place, but the cart still needs to be stable before you operate a machine on it.
Plan Machine Retention and Stability
If the cart will carry a planer or another machine, decide how it will be retained before building the top. Woodcraft’s planer-cart article recommends screwing the planer to the cart or adding perimeter cleats to reduce the chance it slides if a caster meets an obstruction. Follow the machine and fastener requirements for your specific setup.
