There is no single filter location for every Whirlpool washer. Some front-load models have an accessible drain-pump filter behind a drawer or base panel; top-load models may have a lint filter in the agitator or near the top of the wash tub. Other washers have no user-accessible filter. Check the owner’s manual for your exact model before opening or cleaning anything.
Front-load Whirlpool washer filter locations
On some front-load models, the drain-pump filter is behind a storage drawer near the bottom of the washer. Opening the drawer reveals the filter on those designs. Other models use a different access arrangement, such as a removable panel at the base. The location and procedure are model-specific; Whirlpool directs owners to the Owner’s Manual for instructions.

The drain-pump filter is not guaranteed to be accessible on every front-loader. Whirlpool notes that filter locations vary by model and some are inaccessible. Do not remove panels or search inside the washer unless the manual describes that access point.

Top-load Whirlpool washer filter locations
A top-load washer’s lint filter may be inside the agitator or near the top of the wash tub, depending on the model. This is different from the drain-pump filter discussed in guidance for selected front-load machines. Some newer top-load washers have no filter that requires cleaning, or the filter is not user-accessible. Check the manual rather than taking the washer apart to look for one.

How to clean an accessible front-load drain-pump filter
Use these general steps only if the manual for your washer identifies an accessible filter and documents this procedure. Follow its power-off, water-handling, and reinstallation instructions if they differ.
- Prepare for residual water. Gather a shallow pan or other broad, flat container and an absorbent cloth. Follow the manual’s instructions for turning off power and handling water.
- Drain through the small hose, if provided. Some models include a small drain hose beside the filter. Direct it into the container and let the water drain as the manual describes.
- Catch remaining water. Place a cloth beneath the filter before removing it.
- Remove and clean the filter. Whirlpool’s general guidance for applicable models says to turn the filter counterclockwise, clear large lint clumps by hand, and rinse away residue.
- Reinstall securely. Turn the filter clockwise and seat it fully. Position its handle as the model’s manual specifies before closing the access point.
Whirlpool’s all-in-one washer-dryer Product Help page calls for this filter procedure every six months, but that interval is specific to that product guidance—not a schedule for every Whirlpool washer. For other front-load models, Whirlpool says to clean the filter occasionally and defer to the owner’s manual.

What if the washer is not draining?
A clogged pump filter can interfere with draining, but it is not the only possible cause. Whirlpool’s troubleshooting guidance also points to drain-hose placement and other issues. Treat a filter check as one possible troubleshooting step, not proof that the filter is blocked. If the manual does not describe user cleaning, the filter is inaccessible, or you are unsure how to drain the washer safely, contact Whirlpool support or a qualified washer service provider.
