Fresh green needles that stay on the branches when touched are a useful sign that a cut Christmas tree is fresh. If your tree has become dry, remove it from your home rather than relying on more water to restore it. There is no published needle-drop count or exact number of days that reliably defines when a tree is dry.

How to spot a drying Christmas tree

When choosing a tree, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends looking for fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. At home, increasing needle loss or greenery that looks brown and brittle can be warning signs, but the sources do not establish a standardized brittleness test or needle-loss threshold for diagnosing a whole tree. Do not wait for a particular count of fallen needles before acting.

Indoor cut greens can dry quickly and become brown and brittle, according to University of Minnesota Extension. That observation applies to cut greenery generally; it is not a validated test for the moisture level of an entire Christmas tree.

What to do if the tree is dry

Remove a dry tree from the home promptly. NFPA’s 2025 guidance says, “Get rid of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry.” Do not store it in the home or garage, or leave it outside against the home. Check whether your community offers tree recycling or collection.

Dry trees can add to a fire hazard. NFPA estimates that, in the United States during 2016–2020, an average of 160 home structure fires per year involved ignition of Christmas trees. The estimated annual averages were two civilian deaths, 11 civilian injuries, and $12 million in direct property damage. These are historical national estimates, not current-year totals. Three-quarters of the fires occurred in December or January; NFPA notes that keeping a natural tree up longer after Christmas gives it more time to dry out and ignite. Read NFPA’s 2022 report.

How to keep a fresh tree hydrated

Watering helps maintain a fresh tree; it is not an established way to reverse dryness once the tree is dry. For a newly purchased tree, follow these setup and care steps:

  1. Make a fresh cut before setting it up. NFPA advises cutting two inches from the trunk base before placing the tree in its stand. University of Minnesota Extension explains that sap can seal a harvested evergreen’s cut and block water absorption. This is a setup step, not a proven treatment for a tree that has already dried indoors. See NFPA’s Christmas tree safety guidance and University of Minnesota Extension’s care advice.
  2. Keep the cut end submerged. Use a water-holding stand that fits the trunk, and check the water level daily so the base does not become exposed. NFPA recommends adding water to the stand daily. University of Minnesota Extension notes that trees take up the most water during the first couple of weeks. See its December garden checklist.
  3. Use plain water. University of Minnesota Extension says the tree needs plain water, not sugar or sugary drinks. Sugar can promote mold that clogs the tissue responsible for water movement.

Reduce fire hazards while the tree is indoors

  • Keep the tree at least three feet from heat sources.
  • Turn off tree lights when you leave home or go to bed.
  • Remove the tree after Christmas or sooner if it is dry, and use a local recycling or collection option if available.

These precautions follow NFPA’s safety guidance.
