Invisible Fence Troubleshooting: Quick Fixes and Common Issues

A one-beep-per-second alarm can mean a wire break and loss of containment. Learn how to check collar power and fit, test at pet height, and decide when a buried-wire repair needs professional help.

If an invisible-fence control panel beeps once per second, treat the system as unable to contain your pet until the wire is repaired. Keep your pet indoors or on a physical leash. For other problems, check the alarm pattern, collar power and fit, test the receiver at your pet’s height, then investigate the boundary wire. These checks help distinguish a battery or setup issue from a break that needs repair.

Start with safety: is the fence still containing your pet?

Invisible Fence Brand warns that “your fence will NOT contain your pets when there is a wire break.” If the control panel is beeping every second, keep pets indoors or use a physical leash until the system is repaired. Do not rely on the electronic boundary while a suspected wire fault remains.

A long pause between control-panel beeps points instead to a backup-battery problem. The fence may continue to operate while power is on, but its protection during a power outage may be lost.

What the symptoms usually mean

Symptom Likely issue First check
Control panel beeps every second Likely boundary-wire break; containment may be unavailable. Secure your pet physically and arrange wire troubleshooting or repair.
Control panel beeps with a long pause Likely backup-battery problem. Check the system’s backup battery; do not assume outage protection is available.
Collar flashes red or signals low battery Low or depleted collar battery. Check the collar manual and install its specified compatible battery, or recharge it if rechargeable.
Collar will not power on Possible charging, battery, reset, or collar-hardware issue. Confirm the charger or correct battery model; try the reset procedure specified for that collar.
Collar does not activate at the boundary Possible low power, poor fit, incorrect test height, system behavior, or wire fault. Check power and fit, test at pet height, and inspect wire connections.
Pet runs through the boundary Possible collar or fit issue, or a training problem; a system fault is also possible. Verify the collar is powered and fitted correctly, then revisit training. Use physical supervision if the system may be faulty.

Work through the quick checks in order

  1. Identify the alarm pattern. A control panel that beeps every second calls for a wire-break investigation. Beeps separated by a longer pause more likely indicate a backup-battery issue.
  2. Check how the collar gets power. For a PetSafe collar that uses a single-use battery, confirm the exact model in its manual. PetSafe identifies genuine RFA-67 and RFA-188 batteries for applicable collars; they are not universal replacements. For a rechargeable collar, confirm that the charger works and let the collar reach a full charge before testing again.
  3. Refit the collar. Invisible Fence recommends a snug fit, with one finger between a correction post and the pet’s skin. Recheck the fit as your pet’s coat, weight, or age changes. A loose collar may not maintain reliable contact.
  4. Test at your pet’s height. The signal field may not reach a small pet’s receiver if you hold it at waist height. Test with the receiver close to the ground, where it would sit on your pet. On Boundary Plus systems, correction may occur only as the pet exits the yard, so walk the receiver through the boundary rather than expecting it to activate from the yard side.
  5. Inspect the boundary-wire connections. PetSafe manuals direct owners to check the wire connections at the transmitter and use the system’s test light where provided. A complete or partial break in the loop can prevent normal operation. Keep your pet physically supervised if a break is suspected.
  6. Get help when the checks do not resolve it. Invisible Fence Brand technicians can test the control panel, lightning or surge protection, receiver, indoor units, and underground wire, make repairs, and help reintroduce the pet to the system. PetSafe advises contacting customer care if the collar or charging equipment appears faulty.

Which fix fits your system?

System or issue What to verify When repair or support is appropriate
Wired boundary Transmitter connections, test-light result if applicable, and continuity of the loop. A suspected complete or partial underground break can require locating and repairing buried wire. Keep pets physically contained until the fault is resolved.
Boundary Plus Test the receiver by walking it through the boundary; correction may occur on exit from the yard. Seek system-specific help if the receiver still does not respond after checking power, fit, and test method.
Wireless system Check collar power and fit, then follow the system manual’s boundary-test method. If there is no alarm pattern or wire loop to inspect, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions for that model rather than applying wired-system repair steps.
Collar battery or charging fault Confirm whether the collar is rechargeable or takes a single-use battery, and verify the model-specific replacement or charger. Contact PetSafe customer care if the correct battery or a full charge does not restore operation.

Replacing a PetSafe collar battery

RFA-67 and RFA-188 are genuine PetSafe battery model references for applicable collars, not interchangeable recommendations for every PetSafe receiver. Check the collar’s model and manual before buying or installing a replacement. PetSafe warns that alternate batteries can damage the collar or void its warranty. If the collar is rechargeable, do not substitute a single-use battery: inspect its charger and follow the charging instructions for that model.

Why a dog may run through a working boundary

A functioning boundary still depends on the receiver being powered, fitted so the correction posts make appropriate contact, and tested in the way that particular system operates. Check those factors first. If they are in order, return to the training process for the system: a pet that has not learned the boundary cues may cross despite a working device. If the collar gives no correction or the control panel signals a fault, address the equipment issue before relying on training alone.

When underground-wire repair needs a technician

Finding a buried break may involve locating a complete or partial fault in the loop; a visible inspection of the transmitter connections may not reveal the damaged section. If a wire break is confirmed or the panel continues to signal one, arrange a repair through the system’s support channel or a qualified service technician. Keep pets on a leash or indoors until the loop is working and containment is restored.
