Where does Robert Downey Jr. live? Architectural Digest reported in April 2025 that the Malibu compound he shares with his wife, Susan Downey, served as the family’s primary residence. That is the latest primary-residence description identified here—not independent confirmation of where the family lives in 2026. Published accounts also describe a separate Malibu beach house, a converted windmill home in East Hampton, and a Venice property used as a base for their production company, Team Downey.
The Malibu compound: the reported primary residence
Architectural Digest reported that Robert and Susan Downey bought their Malibu compound in 2009 for $13.4 million. In its April 2025 retrospective, the magazine described the property as the family’s primary residence at that time. Its account centers on a four-bedroom, country-style cottage set on seven acres, with pastures, animal enclosures, a tennis court, and a barn converted into a two-bedroom guesthouse.
The compound also includes a separate 6,500-square-foot concrete clubhouse, commissioned from architect Nicolò Bini in 2013 and built using the Binishell method. Architectural Digest describes it as a place for guests and entertaining. It is one structure within the larger property, not the family’s entire home.
The separate Malibu beach house
Architectural Digest reported in 2025 that Downey paid $3.8 million for a Malibu beach house in 2017 and still owned it when the retrospective was published. The magazine described it as a 3,400-square-foot, single-story 1970s house with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Reported features include an ocean-view deck, detached garage and studio, outdoor kitchen, putting green, pool, cabana, and fire pit. The article suggests the house was acquired for family use rather than as Downey’s own primary residence; that is the publication’s characterization, not a separate confirmation from the family.

The East Hampton windmill home
In a 2017 home tour, Architectural Digest described the Downeys’ East Hampton property as a late-19th-century windmill folly originally built as a playhouse. Later structural additions turned it into a full residence. The house sits among established gardens in a secluded setting near East Hampton, and its renovation was led by AD100 designer Joe Nahem and Fox-Nahem Associates.
Architectural Digest’s 2025 retrospective reported a 2017 purchase price of $10.5 million and described the four-acre property as having seven bedrooms and 11 bathrooms across the main house, guesthouse, and studio, plus a 50-foot pool and tennis court. These are the magazine’s reported property particulars, not independently verified measurements.

“We didn’t set out to do something conspicuously wacky. We just enjoy a bit of whimsy and fun. And we definitely don’t like boring.”
— Robert Downey Jr., quoted in Architectural Digest’s October 30, 2017 home tour

The Venice property: a business base
Architectural Digest reported in 2025 that the Downeys paid $5.6 million in 2009 for a modern Venice property to serve as a base for Team Downey, their production company. The magazine described a three-story, 7,500-square-foot building with a glass facade, rooftop deck, and infinity pool, and said the couple still seemed to conduct business there. That account does not establish the property as a current family residence.

Architectural Digest’s April 23, 2025 retrospective is the most recent source identified here that names a primary residence: the Malibu compound. A December 9, 2025 article from realestate.com.au also covers Downey’s reported properties, but it is secondary reporting and does not amount to a direct confirmation of his current residence or ownership. The 2017 East Hampton tour offers detail about the home’s design, not proof of who owns or lives there now. Exact addresses are not needed to understand the reported homes and are omitted.

These real properties are separate from Tony Stark’s fictional residence in the Marvel films. Film settings and fictional architecture should not be mistaken for Downey’s actual homes.
