Where Does the Red Wire Go on a Light Switch?

A red wire may be a traveler in a three-way switch circuit, but color alone cannot identify its function. Check the switch type, terminal markings and exact device instructions before proceeding.

A red wire does not have one universal place on a light switch. In a North American-style three-way circuit, it may be one of the two traveler wires, but its role depends on how that particular circuit is wired. Identify the switch type, terminal markings and conductor functions before connecting anything; do not choose a terminal by color alone.

What a red wire may do in a three-way circuit

A three-way circuit lets either of two switches control the same light. Each switch has a common terminal and two traveler terminals. The traveler wires connect the traveler terminals between the switches; the common terminals connect to the incoming hot path and the switched path to the light. The switches route the circuit between travelers as they are operated. The U.S. Navy’s training material explains these circuit roles, but does not establish a universal wire-color rule for homes: three-way switch circuit discussion.

A red conductor can serve as a traveler, but that possibility is not a reliable identification. The role of a conductor depends on the actual circuit layout and installation. TP-Link’s HS210 support FAQ describes traveler wires as the conductors between two wall switches and discusses a common/load conductor in the product’s presented configuration; follow the instructions for the device and circuit you have: HS210 Installation FAQ Content.

Why the answer differs for a single-pole switch

A single-pole switch controls a light from one location, so it does not use the two-traveler arrangement described above. The title alone cannot establish whether a red conductor in a particular box is a traveler, part of another circuit path, or connected in some other way. The available sources do not provide a safe terminal-by-terminal instruction for an unidentified installation.

How to approach an unknown switch box

  1. Identify the switch and its markings. Determine whether it is single-pole or three-way, then read the terminal labels and the exact wiring diagram supplied with that switch. Do not assume a red wire belongs on a particular terminal.
  2. Isolate the circuit before checking. Leviton’s guidance for its neutral-identification check says: “For the load you are verifying – start with the light on and switch the circuit breaker or pull the fuse to ensure the load turns off.” See Leviton’s neutral-identification guidance. That step is limited to the check described on its page; the light turning off does not identify every conductor or prove every wire in an unknown box is safe.
  3. Establish conductor roles safely. Compare the observed installation with the manufacturer’s diagram and use appropriate means to identify conductor function. The sources here do not give a complete diagnostic procedure for an unknown box. If the roles or markings remain unclear, stop and have a qualified electrician identify them.
  4. Follow applicable local requirements. The cited material concerns North American-style three-way switching and product support. It does not establish the rules adopted where you live or the conventions used in your home.

What to do if you cannot identify the red wire

  • Do not connect it based on insulation color or on a diagram for a different switch or installation.
  • Use the exact manufacturer instructions for the device being installed and confirm the circuit arrangement before making connections.
  • If you cannot safely establish which conductor serves each role, leave the wiring undisturbed and contact a qualified electrician.
