When to Take Your Christmas Tree Down After the Holidays

For a cut real Christmas tree, safety comes before tradition: remove it after Christmas or as soon as it becomes dry. If it remains fresh, January 5 or January 6 are both traditional choices, while artificial and rooted trees follow different rules.

For a cut real Christmas tree, take it down after Christmas—or immediately when it begins to dry out, whichever comes first. If the tree is still fresh, January 5 or January 6 is a traditional time to remove it, but neither date is a universal religious or safety requirement.

Artificial trees can come down whenever it is convenient. A rooted or potted tree is different: it should leave the warm house after only a short display period, generally about four to ten days depending on the species and local growing conditions.

The quick answer by tree type

Tree type When to take it down Important qualification
Cut natural tree After Christmas, or immediately when it becomes dry Safety takes priority over waiting for January 5 or 6.
Fresh cut tree kept for tradition January 5 evening or January 6 Keep it watered, away from heat, and remove it sooner if its condition declines.
Artificial tree Any convenient time after the holidays It does not dry out like a natural tree, but lights, heat, cords, and tip-over hazards still matter.
Rooted, potted, or balled-and-burlapped tree After a short indoor display, usually four to ten days Move it through a cool sheltered location before exposing it to freezing weather.

The U.S. Fire Administration and the National Fire Protection Association advise disposing of a natural tree after Christmas or when it is dry. They do not set January 5 or January 6 as a safety deadline. See the U.S. Fire Administration holiday fire guidance and NFPA Christmas-tree safety guidance.

Why January 5 and January 6 are both traditional dates

The date depends on how the Twelve Days of Christmas are counted and when a household observes the end of the season.

  • January 5 is commonly called Twelfth Night, usually referring to the evening before Epiphany.
  • January 6 is Epiphany in the Western Christian sources cited here, and is sometimes treated as the twelfth day or as the day decorations come down.

One counting convention treats Christmas Day as the first of the twelve days, making the evening of January 5 the traditional Twelfth Night. Other descriptions treat January 6 as the culmination of the Christmas season. The Church of England’s liturgical-year calendar describes Christmas as a twelve-day season culminating in Epiphany on January 6.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops identifies January 6 as the Feast of the Epiphany, while its broader description of Christmas Time extends the liturgical season through the Sunday after Epiphany or after January 6. That is a religious-calendar distinction, not a mandatory household rule about when to remove a tree.

Practical tradition: If your cut tree remains genuinely fresh and your family observes the Twelve Days, take it down on the evening of January 5 or after January 6. Both choices are defensible. A dry tree should come down earlier.

Is it bad luck to take the tree down early or leave it up longer?

Claims that removing decorations before January 5 brings bad luck—or that leaving them up after January 6 does so—are folklore and superstition, not a universal religious or safety rule. A household may take down its tree on December 26, New Year’s Day, January 5, January 6, or another convenient date.

The exception is a cut natural tree that is drying out. Keeping a visibly dry tree indoors for the sake of tradition creates a fire risk; it does not protect a household from bad luck.

How to tell when a real tree is too dry

Do not rely only on whether the stand still contains water. The National Christmas Tree Association says the tree’s physical condition is a better indicator of freshness, and water absorption can fluctuate.

Check for these warning signs:

  • The overall color is fading.
  • The bark on the outer twigs is becoming wrinkled.
  • Green exterior needles fall easily when you touch the branches or gently bounce the tree.
  • Branches are becoming brittle, sagging, or unusually stiff.
  • There is excessive needle loss rather than just a small amount of shedding from older interior needles.

Normal shedding of some older interior needles does not necessarily mean the tree is dangerously dry. Excessive loss of green exterior needles, fading color, and wrinkled outer-twig bark are more concerning indicators. The NCTA’s freshness FAQ provides these signs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the stand ran dry overnight: refill it with plain water, inspect the tree closely, and do not assume it is safe simply because it starts absorbing water again. If it shows the warning signs above, remove it.

Why safety overrides the traditional date

A dry Christmas tree can burn extremely rapidly and intensely. The USFA describes a dry tree as one that can burn very hot and very fast, which is why its advice is to dispose of the tree after Christmas or as soon as it becomes dry.

NFPA’s analysis of estimated U.S. home Christmas-tree fires from 2016 through 2020 found that:

  • Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in 44% of the fires.
  • Electrical failure or malfunction contributed to 34%.
  • Heat sources placed too close to combustibles contributed to 20%.
  • There were an estimated 180 home Christmas-tree fires in 2020.

These are historical estimates for the 2016–2020 period, not a current annual fire count or a prediction for every holiday season. The figures are reported in NFPA’s Christmas-tree fire analysis.

If you are waiting until January 5 or 6

Only wait if the tree is still fresh and the setup remains safe:

  • Keep the stand filled with plain water and check it every day. The NCTA gives approximately one quart of water per inch of trunk diameter as a general stand-capacity guideline, not as a guarantee that the tree will remain safe or fresh.
  • Keep the tree away from fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators, space heaters, heat vents, and direct sunlight.
  • Turn off the lights before leaving home or going to bed.
  • Replace light strings that are worn, damaged, loose, or have broken sockets.
  • Never put candles on or near the tree.
  • Take the tree down immediately if its color fades, exterior needles fall excessively, or branches become brittle or sagging.

Plain water is preferable to additives or homemade mixtures. The NCTA’s tree-care guidance warns that additives and home concoctions may harm the tree.

How to remove a real Christmas tree without spreading needles

Plan the route before moving the tree. Clear doors and hallways, protect flooring and walls, and ask another adult to help with a large or heavy tree.

  1. Turn off and unplug the lights. Remove the light strings before attempting to move the tree.
  2. Remove every decoration. Take off ornaments, hooks, garland, tinsel, ribbons, and the tree skirt. Check the branches and floor for ornament hooks.
  3. Protect the floor. Place a tree bag, plastic sheet, old blanket, or other protective covering beneath the tree. A tree bag can help contain needles as the tree is carried out.
  4. Secure loose branches. If needed, gently tie or wrap the branches with a sheet or lightweight cord. Do not drag the tree across finished flooring if carrying it is possible.
  5. Carry it out with two people when necessary. Keep the tree upright where possible and use the clearest route out of the home.
  6. Remove the stand outside. If practical, keep the stand attached until the tree is outdoors or over a protected surface, where spilled water and needles are easier to manage.
  7. Clean up manually first. Sweep or pick up needles before using a vacuum. The NCTA warns that needles can clog vacuum cleaners.

Do not leave a dry tree in the living space, garage, or against the outside of the house while waiting for collection. NFPA specifically warns against keeping a dry tree in the home or garage or leaning it against the home. See the NFPA safety sheet.

  • Christmas-tree chipping or mulching programs.
  • Yard-waste collection, where accepted.
  • Nonprofit or community pickup services.
  • Reuse as mulch or temporary wildlife shelter, where local rules permit.

Local collection dates are not national dates. Before putting the tree out, check your city, county, landlord, homeowners association, or waste hauler for the current season’s rules. Search for [your city or county] Christmas tree recycling [current year] or use the name of your waste-hauling company.

Important: Do not keep a dry tree indoors while waiting for the pickup window. If collection is delayed, follow the hauler’s instructions for a drop-off site or other approved disposal route.

Prepare the tree according to the local program

Before recycling, remove all ornaments, lights, tinsel, hooks, ribbons, tree stands, bags, and other decorations. Rules for flocked trees, artificial trees, and oversized trees differ substantially:

  • Some programs reject flocked or artificial-snow trees, while others accept them.
  • Some require trees above a particular height to be cut in half.
  • Some require direct curb placement rather than putting the tree in a trash, recycling, or yard-waste bin.
  • Some programs have separate drop-off locations or special collection dates.

For example, Raleigh’s 2025–2026 program ran from December 26 through February 1, accepted live trees rather than artificial ones, and instructed residents not to place trees in trash, recycling, or yard-waste bins. Austin’s 2025–2026 guidance accepted all-natural trees beginning December 26, required trees six feet or taller to be cut in half, and rejected flocked trees. San Diego described a different program that accepted green and snow-flocked foliage but rejected artificial greenery, ornaments, tinsel, lights, stands, hangers, and bags. These examples come from the cities’ own guidance: Raleigh, Austin, and San Diego.

Those schedules and requirements are examples, not instructions for every community. As of August 10, 2026, many 2026–2027 holiday collection schedules may not yet be published, so verify the current season before cutting the tree or placing it at the curb.

Can you burn the Christmas tree in a fireplace?

No. Do not burn any part of a Christmas tree in a fireplace or wood stove. The National Christmas Tree Association explicitly advises against it. The dry wood, needles, sap, and rapidly burning branches can create unsafe conditions and excessive buildup or sparks.

Use an approved community chipping program, municipal yard-waste route, mulch option, or other local recycling service instead. The NCTA’s recycling guidance provides additional reuse and disposal direction.

Artificial trees

An artificial tree has no natural-tree drying deadline, so it can be taken down whenever the household is ready. Before storing it:

  • Turn off and unplug all lights.
  • Inspect cords, plugs, and light strings for damage.
  • Disassemble and store the tree according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Keep it away from heat sources while it is displayed.

Look for a manufacturer statement that the tree is fire-resistant, but do not interpret that label as fireproof. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that fire-resistant does not mean a tree cannot catch fire. Its holiday decorating safety guidance also recommends turning lights off when leaving or going to sleep.

Do not assume a natural-tree recycling program accepts artificial trees. Raleigh’s 2025–2026 program, for example, accepted live trees and not artificial ones. Check whether your local waste service offers a separate bulky-item or specialty recycling route.

Rooted, potted, or balled-and-burlapped trees

A living Christmas tree should not stay in a warm house until January 5 or 6 simply because it is still green. It needs a short indoor display period to reduce stress and preserve dormancy.

Penn State Extension recommends four to five days indoors and no longer than one week for a balled-and-burlapped tree. UNH Extension gives a broader seven-to-ten-day maximum. Because recommendations vary by species and climate, treat roughly four to ten days as a source-dependent range, with the shorter period generally preferable when conditions allow.

After the indoor period:

  1. Move the tree to a cool garage, porch, or other sheltered location.
  2. Allow it to acclimate rather than moving it directly from a heated room into freezing weather.
  3. Keep the root ball moist but not waterlogged.
  4. Plant it when local soil and weather conditions permit, following regional extension guidance.

A living tree can still have electrical and heat hazards while indoors, so keep lights away from damaged branches and turn them off when unattended. Penn State and the NCTA both discuss the importance of transitioning a living tree through a cool location.

Flocked or artificial-snow trees

Flocking is a disposal question, not a universal safety or collection category. One city may accept a snow-flocked natural tree while another rejects it. Confirm the rule before placing it out. Never assume that a program accepting live green trees also accepts flocked trees.

Homes with children, pets, or other elevated risks

Earlier removal is sensible when the tree has an unstable stand, is within reach of children or pets, blocks an exit, has damaged lights, or is positioned near a heat source. Watering helps preserve freshness but does not eliminate electrical, candle, heat, or tip-over hazards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the tree dried out before New Year’s

Remove it immediately. Do not wait for Twelfth Night or Epiphany, and do not move it into a garage, shed, porch, or against the house as a temporary storage solution. Contact the local waste service for an approved drop-off or collection option.

Using the tree for wildlife shelter

Where permitted, a fully undecorated natural tree can be reused temporarily in a backyard as wildlife shelter or directed to a garden-mulch program. Remove every piece of tinsel, wire, hook, ornament, ribbon, light, and stand first. Illinois Extension discusses reuse options in its post-holiday living-tree guidance.

A simple removal decision

  1. Is it a cut natural tree? Remove it after Christmas, or sooner if it is drying out.
  2. Is it still fresh and safely positioned? January 5 evening or January 6 is reasonable if you want to follow tradition.
  3. Is it artificial? Take it down when convenient, but unplug lights and store it safely.
  4. Is it rooted or potted? Remove it from the warm house after a short display, acclimate it in a cool sheltered place, and follow local planting guidance.
  5. Do you need disposal? Remove all decorations and verify the current municipal or hauler rules for dates, flocking, size, bags, stands, and artificial trees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave a fresh real Christmas tree up until January 6?

Yes, if it remains demonstrably fresh and is kept safely watered and away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, heat vents, and direct sunlight. Turn off its lights when you leave or go to bed. Remove it sooner if the color fades, exterior needles fall excessively, or branches become brittle or sagging. Safety guidance does not require waiting until January 6.

What should I do if my Christmas-tree pickup is delayed?

Check your city, county, landlord, HOA, or waste hauler for an approved drop-off site or alternate collection route. Do not keep a dry tree indoors, in a garage, or leaning against the house while waiting, and do not place it in a bin unless the local program specifically instructs you to do so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I put a Christmas tree in the regular trash or recycling bin?

It depends on the local program, but many communities require direct curb placement, a drop-off site, or a separate yard-waste route. Remove all decorations, lights, hooks, tinsel, bags, and stands, then check the current instructions before cutting or placing the tree.

Is it safe to use the Christmas tree as firewood?

No. The National Christmas Tree Association says never to burn any part of a Christmas tree in a fireplace or wood stove. Use an approved chipping, mulching, yard-waste, or other recycling option instead.

Is January 5 or January 6 the correct date to take down Christmas decorations?

Both are traditional choices. January 5 is commonly associated with Twelfth Night, while January 6 is Epiphany. The difference reflects counting and religious-calendar conventions, not a universal household requirement. A dry natural tree should come down before either date.

The Bottom Line

For tradition, choose January 5 or January 6. For safety, choose the day a cut natural tree becomes dry. Artificial trees can come down when convenient, while rooted trees should leave the warm house after only a short display. Whatever the tree type, remove all decorations before following your community’s current recycling or disposal instructions—and never burn the tree in a fireplace or wood stove.
