The traditional answer is after Twelfth Night—usually on the evening of January 5 or on January 6, the Feast of Epiphany. The two dates are not necessarily a disagreement: different customs count or name Twelfth Night differently. If you want one practical rule, take Christmas decorations down after January 5 or any time on January 6.
That is the calendar-based answer. A real tree that has become dry, brittle, or unstable should come down sooner, regardless of tradition.

Why January 5 and January 6 are the traditional dates
Christmas is traditionally treated as a twelve-day season beginning on December 25 and leading to Epiphany on January 6. Epiphany commemorates the manifestation of Christ to the wider world and is traditionally associated in Western Christianity with the visit of the Magi. The Church of England describes Christmas as a twelve-day season culminating in Epiphany on January 6.
This is why the traditional custom is not to remove the tree immediately after Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. In the older calendar pattern, Christmas decorations remained in place through the Twelve Days of Christmas and were removed at the close of that period.

In the English tradition, Twelfth Night is commonly identified as January 5, the evening before Epiphany. Under that usage, greenery and decorations come down after Twelfth Night—on the evening of January 5 or by January 6.
Other references call January 6 itself Twelfth Night because it is the twelfth day of Christmas and the Feast of Epiphany. Cambridge University Press describes Twelfth Night as January 6. Both usages explain the familiar practical advice: take the tree down around January 5–6.
January 5 versus January 6: which date should you choose?
| Date | How the tradition is understood | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| January 5 | Twelfth Night is treated as the evening before Epiphany, particularly in English tradition. | Take the tree down after the evening of January 5. |
| January 6 | Twelfth Night is treated as the twelfth day of Christmas, coinciding with Epiphany. | Remove the tree during the day or evening of January 6. |
| After January 6 | The household follows a longer religious or family observance. | Keep decorations up longer if that practice is meaningful and the tree remains safe. |
For a general household, there is no need to treat January 5 as the only correct answer. The clearest wording is: traditionally, Christmas trees come down on or just after January 6, Epiphany. If you are preserving the British wording, say: on the evening of January 5, or by January 6.

When should a Catholic household take decorations down?
A Catholic household may use the liturgical calendar rather than the general January 5–6 custom. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops explains that the Christmas season concludes with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which occurs after Epiphany and has a movable date.

That means a Catholic family may reasonably leave decorations up until the Baptism of the Lord. The exact date changes from year to year, so it should be checked on the relevant parish or church calendar rather than assumed to fall on one fixed annual date.
There is also an important U.S. distinction: Epiphany may be celebrated in parish observance on a Sunday between January 2 and January 8 rather than always on January 6. A household following a particular parish calendar should use that calendar.
What is the Candlemas tradition?
Some older European customs kept Christmas greenery or nativity displays until Candlemas on February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Candlemas falls forty days after Christmas and commemorates the presentation of Jesus in the Temple.
February 2 is best described as an older, regional, or minority tradition—not the standard modern answer for most households. It can be a meaningful choice for a family that deliberately follows that custom, but it should not be presented as a universal Christian deadline or as the normal date for everyone.

Regional customs and Three Kings Day
Traditions differ by country, denomination, and family. In many Spanish-speaking countries, Three Kings Day on January 6 remains a major celebration. Some households therefore leave the tree and other decorations up through January 7, after gifts associated with the Three Kings have been received.
HISTORY also reports an Irish belief that taking down the Christmas tree before Epiphany brings bad luck. That is folklore, not an objective consequence: removing decorations early does not cause bad luck. It does, however, explain why January 6 became an especially important removal date in some traditions.
Families may also keep decorations up for reasons that have nothing to do with church observance—such as accommodating work schedules, celebrating the New Year with visitors, or waiting until children have finished school. A practical household decision is not a rejection of tradition.

Calendar traditions should never override the condition of a real Christmas tree. Take it down before January 5 or 6 if it has become dry, brittle, is shedding heavily, has an unstable stand, or shows any other sign that it is no longer safe to keep indoors. The research establishing the traditional dates does not provide a universal fire-safety threshold for every tree, so there is no responsible single number of days that applies to all homes.

Once you decide to remove it:
- Unplug lights and other electrical decorations before handling the tree.
- Remove ornaments, hooks, garlands, and lights carefully so they can be inspected before storage.
- Protect floors, walls, stairs, and door frames as you carry the tree out. A tree may be lighter than furniture but can still scratch surfaces, shed needles, or catch on trim.
- Follow your municipality’s instructions for curbside collection, drop-off, chipping, or recycling. Collection dates and accepted tree sizes vary by location.
For a real tree, do not assume that a generic “Christmas tree recycling near me” result applies to your address. Verify the service, date, preparation rules, and whether ornaments, stands, bags, or flocking must be removed.
A simple post-holiday takedown and storage checklist
For an artificial tree
- Photograph the assembled tree before disassembly if branch shaping takes significant time.
- Label sections, color-coded plugs, and unusual connectors.
- Allow branches and fabric components to dry fully before packing them away.
- Use a Christmas tree storage bag sized for the disassembled sections rather than forcing the tree into its original carton.
- Store the packed tree in a dry location away from roof leaks, plumbing leaks, condensation, pests, and sharp construction materials.
Storage tip: A Christmas tree storage bag can make an artificial tree easier to move and protect it from dust between seasons. It is a practical accessory for the storage task, not part of the tradition itself.
For ornaments and decorations
- Discard damaged electrical items, cracked ornaments, and frayed cords rather than packing them for another year.
- Group decorations by room, color scheme, or installation order.
- Wrap fragile ornaments individually and avoid placing heavy items on top of delicate ones.
- A Christmas ornament storage box can keep compartments, padding, and labels together for next season.
- Keep an inventory of specialty items so they are not accidentally discarded during a future cleanout.
An ornament storage box is most useful when it is labeled by contents and stored where the household can reach it without climbing over unstable stacks.

For string lights
- Test each strand before packing it away so a failed set is not mistaken for a working one next year.
- Coil lights loosely and avoid tight bends that can stress wires.
- Separate indoor and outdoor-rated strands and label extension cords or timers with their intended location.
- A Christmas light storage reel or light organizer can reduce tangling and simplify next year’s installation.
A light storage reel is a small convenience, but it directly addresses one of the most frustrating parts of taking decorations down: tangled strands and unidentified cords.

- January 5 is not the only correct date. January 6 is also widely used for Twelfth Night or Epiphany.
- All Christians are not required to remove decorations on Epiphany. Denominations, parish calendars, and household customs differ.
- Candlemas is not the ordinary modern deadline. It is better presented as an older or regional practice.
- The Twelve Days of Christmas do not mean the commercial shopping period beginning after Thanksgiving. Traditionally, they run from December 25 through January 5, leading into Epiphany on January 6.

Is it bad luck to take down a Christmas tree before January 6?
Some folklore, including an Irish belief reported by HISTORY, associates early removal with bad luck. That is a cultural belief rather than an objective fact. A household may remove decorations earlier for practical or safety reasons.
Can I leave my Christmas tree up until February 2?
Yes, if your household follows the older or regional Candlemas custom and the tree remains safe. February 2 is not the standard modern answer for most households, and it should not be described as a universal Christian rule.
