When to Repair or Replace a Major Appliance

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair a major appliance when it is relatively young, the fault is clearly diagnosed, coverage is available or the estimate is reasonable, and the repair should restore useful service. Replace it when failures keep recurring, a major repair consumes too much of the appliance’s remaining value, safe service or parts are unavailable, or a new model’s measured operating savings and practical benefits justify its full installed cost. There is no reliable universal age cutoff or “50% rule.”

Use this decision sequence before authorizing work

A symptom alone cannot tell you whether repair is worthwhile. A refrigerator that is warm may need a simple seal, a fan, a control, or a compressor; those repairs have very different economics. Work through the same sequence for a refrigerator, washer, dryer, dishwasher, range, or another major appliance.

  1. Identify the machine. Record the appliance type, brand, exact model number, approximate purchase date, original price if known, and the actual symptom. Read the owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s troubleshooting page for basic checks that do not expose you to electrical, gas, or refrigerant hazards.
  2. Check coverage first. Look up the manufacturer warranty, any service contract, and recalls or repair campaigns for the model. A separately purchased extended warranty can overlap with the original warranty, so review covered parts and labor, exclusions, duration, and required service procedures in the contract and in the Federal Trade Commission’s warranty guidance.
  3. Get a diagnosis and written estimate. Ask what the service-call or diagnostic fee includes, whether it is credited toward the repair, how long the diagnosis is valid, and whether parts, labor, taxes, and disposal are itemized. Obtain the recommended repair, not just a price for replacing a symptom-related part.
  4. Price a suitable replacement. Compare the quote with the current delivered, installed, and connected price of a comparable replacement. Include required electrical or plumbing changes, delivery, haul-away or recycling, permits where applicable, and any accessories needed for the new model.
  5. Account for the next few years. Estimate the service life you might get after the repair, the chance of another failure, expected energy or water use, and the disruption if the appliance fails again. Compare those factors with a replacement’s warranty and expected service.
  6. Choose only work you can do safely. Simple, model-specific tasks may be suitable for a capable owner. Gas connections, high-voltage electrical work, sealed refrigerant systems, structural disassembly, and repairs involving fire or shock risks belong with a qualified technician.

This process is more dependable than applying a fixed percentage of the appliance’s purchase price. The available evidence does not establish a universal threshold that works for every appliance, fault, household, and region.

Build a true repair-versus-replacement cost

Use the repair estimate as one line in a larger comparison. A low invoice can still be poor value if the appliance is near the end of its useful life or has several developing problems. Conversely, a costly repair can be sensible on a newer, high-value appliance with a contained failure.

Cost or risk Questions to answer
Repair now Does the quote include diagnosis, parts, labor, taxes, and a workmanship warranty? Is the part new and available?
Replacement now What is the price for a comparable capacity and configuration after delivery, installation, hookups, haul-away, and required modifications?
Remaining service How much service is realistically left if this repair succeeds, and are other components already showing wear?
Operating cost What energy or water use does each model report under comparable tests, and what do local utility rates and your usage imply?
Risk and disruption Could a repeat failure spoil food, flood a room, create a fire or gas hazard, or leave you without an essential appliance while waiting for parts?
Coverage and access Is the failure covered by warranty or recall, and can qualified service and compatible parts be obtained for this model?

Do not count a repair as “cheap” until you know whether the service fee is separate. Do not count a replacement as “the price on the shelf” until installation and removal are included.

How age and appliance type change the answer

Age is a useful starting point, not a verdict. Consumer Reports reproduces broad average useful-life estimates attributed to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers:

Appliance Broad average useful-life estimate
Electric range 13–15 years
Gas range 15–17 years
Refrigerator 9–13 years
Dryer 13 years
Washing machine 5–15 years

These are population-level estimates, not a forecast for your unit. The washer range alone shows why age cannot settle the decision: use intensity, model design, maintenance, water quality, and prior repairs can move actual life substantially.

Refrigerators

Consumer Reports says refrigerators under 10 years old are often more economical to repair, while exceptions depend on the refrigerator type, purchase value, fault, and estimate. Its survey evidence illustrates the uncertainty: a study described in its guidance covered 95,711 members and 108,573 refrigerators purchased from 2012 through 2022. In earlier member surveys characterized there, 62% of refrigerator repairs succeeded on the first attempt and another 25% succeeded after two or more attempts. Those are survey results, not a guarantee for a particular model or a current local service rate. See the Consumer Reports refrigerator guidance.

Fault type matters. The same article reports a median $562 repair cost for a broken or faulty compressor in a previous member survey; compressor work can therefore change the calculation dramatically compared with a dispenser, gasket, fan, or other contained issue. Treat that figure as dated survey context, not a quote. Before replacing a refrigerator, verify dimensions, door swing, ventilation clearance, electrical requirements, water connection, and whether the replacement will fit through the delivery route.

Washing machines

For a washer, compare the estimate with age, warranty status, use frequency, and the complexity of the failed component. Consumer Reports’ 2024 survey reports median repair-cost ranges of $123 to $214 by washer type, with compact washers around $186; diagnostic or service fees may be additional. The figures are survey medians, not a promise of what a local technician will charge. Its washer guidance discusses the distinction between a minor accessible task and a motor, transmission, drum, or control repair; read it at Consumer Reports’ washer guidance.

A washer that has already needed several pumps, bearings, suspension parts, or control boards deserves a whole-machine comparison even if the next repair is modest. Include the cost of water damage or a laundromat during a long parts delay when the appliance is essential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clothes dryers

Dryers often have accessible components, but a lower repair price is not automatically good value for an old, heavily used machine. Consumer Reports’ 2026 dryer article illustrates the method with a nine-year-old $600 electric dryer and a $118 median repair-cost example. That example is not a general average or current quote. Consider drum bearings, motor condition, heating components, venting, and fire safety together, rather than replacing only the first failed part. The category discussion is at Consumer Reports’ dryer guidance.

Dishwashers, ranges, and other appliances

No authoritative universal cutoff was established for dishwashers, ranges, or every appliance subtype. Apply the same estimate-and-remaining-life framework. For a range, weigh burner or element repairs against the condition of controls, oven electronics, door seals, and safety systems. For a dishwasher, compare pump, heater, and control repairs with the installed price of a replacement that fits the opening and uses the connections already in place.

Check energy and water savings without overpromising

Operating savings can justify replacement, but only when they are model-specific. The FTC explains that EnergyGuide labels show estimated energy use and allow comparisons among similar appliances; use the label on the old and candidate new models rather than a generic “new appliances are efficient” assumption. See the FTC EnergyGuide guide.

ENERGY STAR says refrigerators more than 15 years old could cost more than about $95 per year to run under the data context cited on its refrigerator page. That is not a guaranteed saving from replacement: actual savings depend on the old unit, the replacement, usage, and local electricity prices. ENERGY STAR also recommends considering a certified model when replacing a second refrigerator and discusses seals, placement, refrigerants, and recycling at its refrigerator guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For dishwashers, the Department of Energy’s federal-procurement comparison lists annual energy use of 200 kWh for the best available option, 240 kWh for an ENERGY STAR option, and 307 kWh for a less-efficient option. Those figures use the page’s stated test method and federal-facility electricity-price assumptions; they are not predictions of a household bill. The DOE comparison is at its residential dishwasher purchasing guidance.

When calculating payback, multiply the difference in reported annual use by your actual utility rate, then account for the replacement’s purchase and installation cost. Include water use where the appliance and your utility bill make it material.

Warranty, recalls, parts, and repair access

A warranty or recall can turn an apparent replacement decision into a covered repair. Confirm the model and serial number, the coverage period, and whether labor, shipping, and consequential damage are included. Service contracts may require an authorized provider or impose exclusions; read those terms before paying another technician.

The FTC has discussed repair restrictions and the availability of parts, diagnostics, and instructions. Its 2023 statement reflects the Commission’s position and report, not a guarantee that a part or service manual exists for every model. Check the manufacturer and applicable local rules for your specific appliance at the FTC right-to-repair statement.

When a do-it-yourself repair is reasonable

Owner repairs should be limited to tasks with a clear diagnosis, model-specific instructions, and manageable hazards. A replacement gasket, lint-screen housing, accessible filter, or other manufacturer-documented part may be reasonable when power, gas, and water can be safely isolated and the part is confirmed by model number.

Stop and hire qualified service when the diagnosis involves a sealed refrigeration circuit, gas line, combustion system, high-voltage capacitor, burned wiring, structural drum work, or a leak that could damage the building. Never bypass a thermal fuse, door interlock, grounding conductor, or other safety device to make an appliance run.

Examples of the framework in practice

Contained fault on a younger appliance

A four-year-old refrigerator has a confirmed fan failure, a written estimate that includes parts and labor, no recall exclusion, and a replacement that would require delivery and cabinet modifications. Repair is usually the stronger starting point because the fault is contained and substantial service life may remain. Recheck the decision if the technician finds compressor damage or multiple unrelated failures.

Major repair on an aging appliance

A 12-year-old refrigerator needs a compressor, has a history of control and seal repairs, and the estimate approaches the installed price of a comparable replacement. Replacement is more plausible because the repair would consume a large share of the appliance’s remaining value while other age-related failures remain possible. Verify the replacement’s EnergyGuide use and fit before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Low quote, high disruption

A heavily used nine-year-old dryer has a modest motor quote but a worn drum, damaged rollers, and a long parts lead time. The invoice alone understates the risk. Compare a new unit’s total installed cost and warranty with the likelihood of paying for another visit and losing access to the dryer again.

Questions to ask the technician or retailer

  • What exact component failed, and what tests confirmed it?
  • Is the diagnosis fee credited toward the repair?
  • Are parts and labor itemized, and what warranty covers the work?
  • How long is the part expected to remain available?
  • What other components show wear or have an elevated chance of failing next?
  • For replacement, are delivery, installation, hookups, haul-away, recycling, and required code changes included?
  • Which EnergyGuide figures are comparable, and what assumptions affect the estimate?

Common mistakes that lead to a bad decision

  • Using a fixed age cutoff. Useful-life ranges are broad, and maintenance and fault type matter.
  • Applying the “50% rule” automatically. No universal repair-cost percentage is established for all appliances and households.
  • Comparing a repair invoice with an incomplete replacement price. Add installation, delivery, removal, hookups, and taxes.
  • Assuming every new model saves the same amount. Compare EnergyGuide values for similar models and use local utility rates.
  • Ordering a part by appearance. Match the exact model and revision; an incompatible part can create a safety hazard or a second service call.
  • Ignoring access and safety. A theoretically repairable appliance may not be economically repairable where qualified service or parts are unavailable.

For a specific appliance, document the model, coverage, diagnosis, itemized estimate, replacement total, operating-cost information, and expected remaining life on one page. That record makes the trade-off visible and gives you a defensible basis for either authorizing the repair or replacing the unit.
