Water a poinsettia when the soil surface feels dry to the touch. Then water thoroughly, let excess drain away, and empty any saucer or decorative pot cover. Check the soil rather than watering on a fixed weekly schedule.
How to tell when a poinsettia needs water
Check the surface of the potting soil with a finger. If it feels dry, it is time to water. A pot that feels noticeably lightweight can help confirm that the soil has dried; the University of Minnesota Extension describes both cues in its poinsettia care guidance. The University of Maryland Extension likewise advises watering when the soil feels dry to the touch (Poinsettias).

Do not wait for pronounced wilting. Delaware Cooperative Extension notes that slight drooping can be a cue, but allowing a poinsettia to wilt can contribute to premature leaf drop. Its guidance is to water thoroughly when the soil is dry or the leaves begin to droop a little (Caring for Poinsettias).

How to water and drain the pot
- Check the soil. Water when the surface feels dry rather than following a calendar.
- Make room for runoff. Remove foil or a decorative pot cover, or take the nursery pot to a sink. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends sink watering to keep water from collecting inside the cover (Guide to Selection and Care of Poinsettias).
- Water thoroughly. Apply water until the soil is saturated and excess begins to escape through the drainage holes. Avoid frequent small sips in place of a thorough watering.
- Let it drain completely. Empty standing water from the saucer or cover. Delaware Extension says to discard water remaining in the saucer after 3 or 4 hours.
A container needs drainage holes for excess water to escape. Without adequate drainage, it is harder to keep the roots from sitting in water.

Why a fixed watering schedule can fail
How quickly potting soil dries varies with the plant’s conditions, so the extension guidance emphasizes checking the soil rather than prescribing a universal number of days or a fixed amount of water. Water when the surface is dry, then allow it to dry again before the next thorough watering. Iowa State’s poinsettia watering FAQ also frames watering around soil moisture.

- Yellowing or dropping lower leaves: Persistent wet soil or water trapped in a decorative cover can be a cause. Overwatering can progress to root rot, wilting, and rapid plant collapse.
- Drooping after the soil has dried: Do not routinely leave the plant dry until it visibly wilts; prolonged wilting can also cause leaf loss.
- Wet soil in a cool spot: Delaware Extension cautions that cool temperatures combined with moist soil encourage root rots. Keep the poinsettia in a bright window area and avoid leaving its roots cold and wet.
Leaf drop can follow either prolonged dryness or overly wet roots, so use the dry-to-touch cue and pair a thorough watering with complete drainage. If you are unsure whether the surface is dry, a soil-moisture meter is optional; touch and pot weight are the no-cost checks recommended by extension guidance.
