There is no age cutoff that makes someone automatically too old to move furniture. The safer question is whether you can manage this particular item, on this particular route, given your current health, strength, balance, and symptoms. If the load is heavy or awkward, the route is difficult, or you are unsure, use equipment, get help, or hire movers rather than treating age or a lifting rule as a personal safety guarantee.
Why age alone does not answer the question
The CDC’s older-adult activity guidance recommends activity suited to a person’s abilities and health; it does not set a furniture-moving cutoff age. Its general recommendations for adults 65 and older include aerobic, muscle-strengthening, and balance activity, but those are not qualifications for lifting a couch, dresser, or other heavy object. Being active does not prove that a particular move is safe.

The CDC’s phrase “It’s never too late to start!” is about beginning physical activity—not evidence that every person can safely move a particular piece of furniture. A birthday, including 65 or 70, cannot by itself determine whether to do the job.

Consider the person, the object, and the route together. A manageable item on a clear, level path can become a poor choice when it is bulky, hard to grip, carried far from the body, lifted from a low position, or moved through stairs or tight turns. Repeated lifts, a long duration, limited rest, twisting, and unstable footing can add difficulty.

Check your own condition
- Consider your current strength, balance, grip, and ability to move without significant pain or symptoms.
- Take relevant chronic conditions, disabilities, recent injuries, and fracture risk into account.
- If you have significant pain, a recent injury, osteoporosis-related spinal fracture, high fracture risk, or a chronic condition that may affect exertion, ask a health professional about your limits before attempting a difficult move.
Check the item and route
- Ask whether the item is heavy, large, awkwardly shaped, or difficult to hold securely—not just whether you can lift it briefly.
- Look at where the lift starts and ends, how far you must carry it, whether you would need to twist, and whether the path includes stairs, narrow turns, or slippery or uneven surfaces.
- Count the lifts and consider whether you can pause and rest. A move involving several trips may be much more demanding than one lift.
These are practical ways to apply workplace lifting principles to a household move, not a clinical assessment of your capacity. The Revised NIOSH Lifting Equation evaluates workplace lifting conditions such as load weight, hand location, vertical travel, asymmetry, frequency, duration, rest, and grip. It is not a simple age-based test or a universal safe maximum for moving furniture at home.
Choose between moving it yourself, getting help, or hiring movers
| Option | When it may make sense | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Move it yourself | The item and route seem manageable for you, and you can move without significant symptoms. | Do not rely on age, general fitness, or one successful lift as proof that the whole move is safe. |
| Use equipment or ask for help | The item is heavy or awkward, or equipment can reduce the amount you need to carry. | A dolly may help on a suitable, clear route. Check whether the equipment, surface, load, stairs, and turns are compatible; do not assume a dolly makes every move safe. |
| Hire movers | You decide the item is too heavy or awkward, the route is difficult, or your health makes the move a poor risk. | Professional movers are a practical option when the job exceeds your comfort or ability. No particular provider is endorsed here. |
How to reduce risk if you proceed
NIOSH’s September 14, 2026 construction-focused toolbox talk recommends using a dolly or powered equipment for heavy objects where possible, asking for help with heavy or awkward loads, and planning a clear route. It also advises facing the direction of travel, keeping the back as straight as possible, lifting with the legs, and avoiding twisting while lifting or carrying. These are risk-reduction measures, not a guarantee that a move is safe for a particular person.

- Keep the move controlled. Face the direction you are moving, avoid twisting while lifting or carrying, and use the lifting approach recommended by NIOSH as a practical precaution.
- Stop if the move no longer feels manageable. Pain, loss of balance, or other concerning symptoms are reasons to stop and reassess rather than push through.
Is 50 pounds a safe limit for older adults?
No universal household limit for older adults is established by the sources discussed here. The NIOSH/CPWR construction toolbox talk says each person should not lift more than 50 pounds and recommends help with heavy or awkward objects. That is guidance in a construction-work context; it is not a guarantee that a 50-pound item is safe for any individual, or that a lighter piece of furniture is safe to move. An object’s shape, grip, route, repetition, and the person’s health all matter.

When to ask a health professional
CDC advises people with chronic conditions or disabilities to work with a health professional on activity suited to their abilities. That is especially relevant if you have significant pain, a recent injury, high fracture risk, or a spinal fracture related to osteoporosis. NHS bone-health guidance advises people at high fracture risk or with osteoporosis-related spinal fractures to protect their backs, bend their knees when lifting, and avoid awkward bending-and-lifting movements. Get individualized advice before attempting a demanding move if any of these concerns apply.
