The best way to align hinges is to identify the hinge type and where the door is out of line before adjusting anything. If the hinge has adjustment screws, follow the instructions for that exact model. If it is fixed, use a shim only when the gap pattern calls for it. Screw locations, turning directions, and tools are not universal.
Start by finding where the door is out of line
Close the door slowly and inspect the gap, or reveal, around its edges. Note where the door rubs, whether it appears to sag or sit crooked, and whether it is a cabinet door, an interior or exterior door, or part of a specialty system. A gap pattern is a clue, not proof of the cause: the hinge, its fasteners, the frame, or the door itself may be involved.
For a steel door, the Steel Door Institute’s guidance ties shim placement to the specific clearance problem. Avoid adding a shim or turning a screw simply because one edge looks uneven; first identify which edge is too tight and which direction the door needs to move.
Identify whether the hinge is adjustable
Look for adjustment screws and identify the maker and model if possible. Use that hinge’s instructions to confirm which screw controls the movement you need. For example, HOPPE’s documented system uses set hinges for vertical adjustment and guide hinges for horizontal adjustment; the manufacturer identifies guide hinges by an adjusting screw visible on the door sash leaf. That arrangement applies to the documented HOPPE system, not every hinge.

Cabinet hinges may offer up/down, in/out, and side-to-side adjustment, but the screw layout depends on the hardware and whether the cabinet is framed or frameless. Qwikkit describes those adjustment axes for its cabinet hinges, while Blum provides model-specific hinge instructions. Do not assume that a screw in the same apparent position has the same job on another hinge.
Adjust a hinge with the manufacturer’s instructions
- Confirm the hinge model and the movement required. Use the manufacturer’s diagram or instructions to match the adjustment screw to the direction the door needs to move.
- Use the specified tool. HOPPE’s instructions for the covered adjustable hinges require a 3/16-inch hex wrench and also call for a small flat-head screwdriver; a plastic putty knife is recommended for certain finial caps. Other hinges may require different tools.
- Make a small change and check the door. Follow the maker’s procedure rather than borrowing screw directions from another hinge. Close the door slowly and inspect the reveal after each adjustment.
HOPPE’s vertical and horizontal adjustment procedures differ. Its tool size and turning directions should not be applied to unrelated hardware.

Shim a fixed hinge only when the gap diagnosis supports it
Shimming changes the position of a hinge leaf relative to the door or frame. The Steel Door Institute describes this method for steel-door clearance corrections, with shim placement selected for the particular tight spot. The appropriate hinge and location vary with the gap pattern, so the examples in steel-door guidance should not be generalized to every residential door.
- Support the door to relieve its weight and tension; a suitable support or wooden wedge can help.
- Remove the relevant hinge screws and place a shim between the hinge leaf and the door or frame, at the location indicated by the diagnosed clearance problem.
- Reinstall the screws and check that they still have adequate thread engagement. Do not keep adding thickness if the screws can no longer hold securely.
- Close the door slowly and inspect the full perimeter reveal before deciding whether another adjustment is needed.
A shim placed at the wrong hinge or in excessive thickness can make alignment worse. If the hinge or frame is damaged, or the screws will not tighten, shimming is not a substitute for fixing the underlying problem.

Choose the method that matches the hardware

When adjustment is not the answer
Stop and investigate further if screws are loose or will not hold, the frame appears out of alignment, a hinge is damaged, or the hinge has reached the limit of its adjustment range. The problem may require repair of the fastener, frame, or door rather than another hinge adjustment. Consult the door or hinge manufacturer when the cause is unclear; guidance for one door type does not automatically apply to another.
