If you can’t find a stud where your mount needs to go, you have three real options: move the mount to verified framing, use a hollow-wall anchor that its instructions explicitly support for your wall and fixture, or have the wall reinforced or assessed by a qualified person. The right choice depends on what the wall is made of, what the fixture’s own manual requires, and what happens if the item comes down.
Step one: identify what the wall is made of
A stud finder tells you where framing is. It does not tell you what the wall itself is built from, and that determines which fasteners are even candidates. Before choosing hardware, confirm which of these you have:
- Drywall over wood studs. The most common case. Framing is wood, and the question is whether the mount can use framing at all or needs a hollow-wall anchor at some points.
- Drywall over metal studs. Lowe’s notes that metal studs can require specialty fasteners, so a standard wood-screw approach may not hold. Confirm the framing type before you buy hardware.
- Plaster. Do not assume a drywall anchor is suitable. Plaster is a different substrate and needs hardware designed for it.
- Masonry or cinderblock. Drywall anchors are not the answer here. The manual for one wall mount in the examples below excludes cinderblock for its included hardware, which is a useful signal that masonry needs its own method.
- Damaged, soft, or unknown construction. If you cannot tell what is behind the surface, or the wall is crumbling, water-stained, or spongy, stop and get the wall assessed before adding any load.
Step two: recheck the framing before you give up on a stud
Missed studs are common, and a second pass often finds framing where the first one did not. Work through these checks in order:
- Run a stud finder across the planned mounting area, marking the edges of each framing member. Lowe’s guide “How to Use a Stud Finder” covers locating both wood and metal framing.
- Use framing spacing as a prediction, not a guarantee. Lowe’s says studs are “typically” 16 or 24 inches apart in many homes. If the first readings do not match that pattern, scan a wider area before deciding there is no stud at all.
- Compare the mount’s hole pattern with the framing you have found. If one or two holes land on framing and the rest do not, you are dealing with a fixture question, not just a wall question. Check the manual, covered below.
- Shift the mount. A few inches left or right, or a few inches up or down, is often enough to reach framing. Home Depot’s shelving guide makes the same planning point: if studs are unavailable or too far apart, plan the layout around that before choosing anchors.
Decision table: match the situation to the path
| Situation | Recommended path | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Framing is available at a workable position and the hole pattern fits | Mount to verified framing | Fixture requires structural attachment, so use framing whenever it can be reached |
| Hollow drywall, no usable stud, fixture allows hollow-wall anchors | Approved toggle-style or other hollow-wall anchor | Wall thickness, required hole size, fixture clearance, rating per anchor or pair, and the anchor’s installation directions |
| Plaster, masonry, metal framing, damaged wall, or unknown construction | Hardware designed for that substrate, confirmed in the fixture manual; ask a qualified installer if unsure | Substrate-specific fasteners, not a drywall anchor by default |
| Heavy, overhead, moving, or safety-critical load | Relocate, reinforce framing, or arrange professional installation | The load must sit within the manual’s stated rules for the actual wall, with no reliance on a generic anchor rating |
Option one: move the mount to verified framing
This is the lowest-risk path when the fixture or load depends on structural attachment. It costs some layout flexibility, but it avoids the question of whether a hollow-wall anchor is rated for the job. If framing sits behind the wall in the wrong place for the mount, a carpenter can add blocking between framing members so the mount can attach where you need it. That is a construction change, so it belongs with a qualified person rather than a DIY drilling session.

Option two: toggle bolts and other hollow-wall anchors
For a light item on hollow drywall, a toggle-style anchor can be appropriate. The key word is appropriate: it only works when the anchor’s instructions, your wall thickness, the load rating, and the fixture geometry all agree. Anchor types differ in how they install, so follow the instructions for the specific product you bought, not general habits from another job.
Checks before you drill
- Wall thickness. Confirm the drywall thickness the anchor is designed for. A toggle sized for one thickness may not seat correctly in another.
- Hole size. Use the hole size the anchor specifies. Drilling a larger hole than specified is a common way to lose holding power.
- Load rating. Lowe’s advises matching capacity to the item. Compare the rating on the packaging with the actual weight, including the item’s contents and any leverage, and treat that rating as a ceiling you do not exceed. Home Depot’s anchor guide cautions against exceeding a stated limit for the same reason.
- Fixture clearance. Make sure the toggle has room behind the wall to open and that the fixture’s hole spacing matches the anchor placement.
- Installation directions. Follow the product’s own steps for pilot holes, tightening, and seating. Do not assume a toggle from one brand installs the same as another.
What the retailer examples do and do not tell you
Home Depot’s guide to drywall anchors lists category examples, including toggle bolts “up to 50 pounds per pair,” along with other category figures. These are examples from a retailer guide, not comparative test results and not a universal safe-load table for your wall. Read the rating on the package you are buying and the fixture manual, not a generic figure from a guide. Retailer guides reviewed in October 2026 describe these categories, but products, ratings, and instructions change, so verify the current packaging before you buy.

Option three: manuals that set their own rules
Many wall mounts ship with their own requirements, and those requirements override general advice. Three examples show how product-specific rules differ.
A mount manual with a four-times requirement
A mount manufacturer’s manual, hosted by Lowe’s, states: “For safe installation, the wall selected for mounting must support 4 times the weight of the total load.” That is that product’s requirement. It is not a building code or a universal rule. The same manual excludes metal studs and cinderblock for its included hardware, so if your wall is either of those, the included hardware is not the answer.

An appliance mounting plate that allows some toggles
An appliance mounting plate manual, hosted by Home Depot, allows toggles at holes that do not have studs, but it still requires at least one stud attachment. That is a specific design rule. It does not mean toggles are acceptable for TV mounts, cabinets, shelving, or any other fixture.
What to do when the manual is silent or unclear
If the manual does not address hollow-wall anchors, or describes a substrate different from yours, treat the fixture as framing-dependent. Move the mount, add framing support, or ask the manufacturer or a qualified installer before drilling into a wall that the manual does not cover.

Checklist before you mount anything without a stud
- The wall type is confirmed as drywall, not plaster, masonry, or metal framing, or you have hardware designed for the actual substrate.
- You have rescanned for framing and checked the mount’s hole pattern against it.
- The fixture manual permits hollow-wall anchors at the locations you plan to use.
- The anchor’s wall thickness, hole size, clearance, and installation steps match the packaging.
- The total load, including leverage and contents, is within the stated rating, with a margin that the manual’s own rules require.
- The load is not overhead, heavy, moving, or safety-critical. If it is, the answer is a different path from the table.
