To choose the right sheet, look beyond a grade label: face and back grades describe appearance, while end-use ratings, span ratings, thickness or Performance Category, and exposure classification describe other aspects of suitability. Most importantly, Exposure 1 is not a long-term weather rating; plywood marked Exterior is intended for long-term weather exposure.
What plywood is and how it is made
Plywood is a wood panel built from thin veneers arranged in cross-laminated layers and bonded under heat and pressure. APA describes this construction as producing a strong, stable structural panel. Veneer species, grading, and the panel’s layup affect its performance and appearance.
Cross-laminating the layers helps distribute strength across panel directions and contributes to dimensional stability. Plywood is used for structural applications such as sheathing and subfloors, as well as shelving, furniture, industrial containers, trailer liners, and recreational-vehicle components. Sanded plywood has face and back plies smoothed during manufacture; APA’s sanded plywood guide describes panels with three or more cross-laminated veneer layers.
For structural plywood, Voluntary Product Standard PS 1-22 covers species, veneer grades, adhesive bonds, construction, dimensions, tolerances, and moisture content. The panel mark communicates information relevant to identifying the product and its performance. APA, Voluntary Product Standard PS 1-22, Structural Plywood (revised October 2, 2023); APA, Plywood; APA, Product Guide: Sanded Plywood (revised May 1, 2011).

How to read plywood grades and panel marks
Different parts of a plywood mark answer different questions. Appearance grade does not, by itself, establish that a sheet is structurally suitable for a particular job.
Face and back veneer grades
Letter grades from A through D describe veneer appearance and allowable repairs, with A the highest appearance grade. A-B and B-C labels identify the face and back veneer grades. APA states that C-grade veneer is the minimum permitted for Exterior plywood; D-grade veneer is limited to panels intended for applications protected from long-term weather exposure. Choose a face grade based on the visible finish you need, but check the panel’s use rating separately.
End-use designation
A designation such as Rated Sheathing identifies an intended application rather than a surface finish. For structural work, use the applicable rating and project requirements to determine whether the panel is appropriate.

Thickness and Performance Category
Panel marks use a Performance Category and a decimal thickness designation. Match these to the project specification and applicable code instead of relying on a general rule based on thickness alone.

Span rating and orientation
A span rating relates to support spacing for a stated application and is subject to the panel’s installation direction and loading assumptions. APA’s example of a two-number sheathing rating uses the first number for roof support spacing and the second for subfloor support spacing. It is not a universal load limit: follow the marking and project requirements for the intended use.
Bond classification
Bond classification describes adhesive performance under moisture exposure. It does not state structural strength or fungal-decay resistance.

These categories are distinct. Read the whole stamp and product documentation rather than treating one grade or number as a complete measure of the sheet’s suitability. APA, Plywood.
Exposure 1, Exterior, and what “CDX” means
Exposure classification indicates the moisture conditions a panel is designed to tolerate. APA distinguishes Exposure 1 panels, intended for limited exposure such as moisture during construction and not for long-term weather exposure, from Exterior panels, designed for repeated wetting and drying or long-term weather exposure.

For an application exposed to weather over the long term, check for an Exterior classification rather than inferring suitability from the letters CDX.

Neither bond classification substitutes for sound detailing, maintenance, or decay protection. If plywood gets wet during construction, its suitability depends on the product’s classification and the conditions of use; do not assume that an Exposure 1 rating means it is intended to remain weather-exposed. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before choosing a sheet
Start with the job the panel must do, then verify that each marking answers the relevant selection question:
- Identify the use. Decide whether the panel is for structural sheathing, a subfloor, a visible furniture surface, or another application.
- Check the structural designation and standard. For structural work, look for the applicable end-use rating and standard information, then confirm that they meet the project specification and code.
- Match thickness or Performance Category and span rating. Verify the intended support spacing, installation orientation, and loading assumptions; do not select by thickness alone.
- Choose the face and back grade for the finish. Use the veneer grades to judge visible surface quality, not as a substitute for a structural rating.
- Confirm exposure suitability. Decide whether the sheet will face limited construction moisture or long-term weather exposure, and check for Exposure 1 or Exterior accordingly.
- Review product documentation for any additional requirements. Where formaldehyde compliance matters, check current, product-specific declarations and applicable rules.
For unusual loads or structural uses, use applicable code and design guidance rather than a generic buying rule. APA identifies the panel mark and product information as the place to check these selection attributes. APA, Plywood.

Adhesives and formaldehyde information
Plywood and other composite wood products are manufactured by bonding wood material—such as veneer, fibers, particles, or strands—generally with resin under heat and pressure. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency publishes information on composite-wood manufacturing emissions and formaldehyde exposure guidance.
The cited EPA materials do not establish one emissions figure that applies to every plywood product. When emissions or compliance are relevant to a project, rely on current, product-specific declarations and verify the rules that apply to that product and location rather than generalizing from a single number.
