The wording “under her house” is headline shorthand. Available reporting places the object in the backyard, not beneath the home’s foundation. That distinction matters because the discovery became an online true-crime mystery before the evidence supported one.
How the buried-rug story began
In late September or around October 1, 2024—the exact date varies among reports—Katie Santry posted videos about an unusual discovery at her Columbus-area property. She and her boyfriend, Brandon, were digging holes for a backyard fence when they encountered a rolled-up carpet or rug buried about two feet below the surface.

Santry had also posted about unsettling events inside the home, including a shattered laptop and objects that appeared to have moved on her desk. Those earlier videos shaped how viewers interpreted the rug. Instead of seeing it simply as an abandoned household object, many commenters began asking whether it could be connected to a crime, a former resident or something paranormal.
According to TechCrunch’s account of the viral story, Santry’s audience grew from roughly 6,000 followers to more than 2 million during the period when the discovery spread online. Reported view totals also reached many millions, with some coverage citing more than 100 million aggregate views. Those figures changed over time and depended on the platform and reporting date.
Why viewers suspected a buried body
The body theory was driven primarily by the sequence of events, not by a confirmed forensic finding:
- A rolled-up rug was found underground in a residential backyard.
- The previous owners reportedly could not explain why it was there.
- Santry had already described strange events in the house.
- Commenters urged her to contact police.
- Cadaver dogs later indicated near the discovery site.
Santry contacted Columbus police on October 2. She also contacted the listing agent and, through that connection, a daughter of the prior owners. Reports said the prior family did not know why the rug had been buried. That left an obvious unanswered question—who put it there and for what purpose—but it did not establish that a crime had occurred.

What happened when police investigated?
Initial officers reportedly treated the discovery as unusual but did not immediately authorize a major excavation. The investigation escalated on October 3, when Columbus homicide investigators and cadaver-detection dogs went to the property.
Video showed the dogs indicating at or near the rug’s location. That detail intensified the online speculation, but a dog alert is not the same as proof that a body is present. As reported explanations from the investigation noted, a dog may react to a scent associated with blood or another substance even when no human remains are present. A false indication, contamination or another source of odor can also be considered during an investigation.
The careful conclusion is therefore: the dogs alerted, prompting further investigation, but they did not prove that the rug contained a corpse.

What was found during the excavation?
On October 4, police and crime-scene personnel excavated the area and removed several pieces of rug material. Columbus police told NBC News that the recovered pieces tested negative for human and animal remains. Police said there were no plans for additional testing at that time. Coverage of the police statement reported the same outcome.

In practical terms, the confirmed discovery was a buried rolled-up rug or shag-style carpet and later-recovered fragments. There was:
- No human body found.
- No animal remains found.
- No publicly established link to a homicide or missing person.
- No confirmed paranormal explanation.
The reason the rug was buried remained unresolved in the available reporting. That uncertainty is not evidence that the most dramatic theory is true.

Why the dog alerts were not a final answer
Cadaver dogs are investigative tools, not infallible proof machines. An alert tells investigators that the dog detected—or appeared to detect—a scent of interest. It does not identify the exact source, establish when the scent arrived or demonstrate that a body is buried at that location.

Related construction context: the fence project
The discovery happened during ordinary property work. Anyone digging fence-post holes should treat an unexpected buried object as a reason to stop, document the location and assess the situation before continuing. Do not cut, unwrap or dispose of an object that could be connected to a crime, and contact local authorities if there is a credible reason to suspect human remains, hazardous material or evidence.
For routine fence installation on private property, a post hole digger is a basic tool for removing soil after the work area has been checked. In the United States, homeowners should also contact the appropriate utility-locating service before digging; underground electrical, gas, water and communications lines may be present even in a backyard. A tool recommendation does not turn ordinary fence work into forensic investigation, and consumer digging tools should never be used to disturb a suspected crime scene.
Could the rug’s history ever be determined?
Possibly, but the available reports did not identify a verified explanation. A homeowner could review property records, speak with prior owners and check local archives, but those steps might reveal only ownership history—not why an object was buried. Without a documented chain of evidence or a credible witness account, theories about the rug’s origin should remain theories.
That is also why it is unsafe to repeat claims that the rug contained blood, came from a homicide or was connected to a ghost. The reports establish an unusual object, an investigation and a negative search result. They do not establish a motive or a crime.

The viral question—what was buried under the house?—has a much less sensational answer than TikTok predicted. A rug was buried in the backyard. The discovery generated a crowd-sourced body theory, and cadaver dogs alerted near the site, but Columbus police’s excavation found rug remnants rather than human or animal remains.

The unresolved part is not whether a body was found. It was why someone buried the carpet in the first place. Based on the reported investigation, that question remained unanswered.
