Children younger than 5 should not use a hot tub. For children age 5 and older, use the tub only at 104°F (40°C) or below, for a brief session, with continuous supervision by a sober adult. These precautions address the main risks: drowning, overheating, illness, slips, and suction entrapment.

Children younger than 5 should not use a hot tub. For children age 5 and older, use the tub only when the water is no hotter than 104°F (40°C), a sober adult is watching continuously, the session is brief, and the equipment and water are in good condition. A child’s swimming ability does not remove the risks: drowning, overheating, illness, slips, and suction entrapment can all occur in a spa.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) uses the more conservative under-5 rule. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren resource uses an under-3 threshold and recommends limiting use to 15 minutes. Because those sources differ, families looking for one general rule should follow the CDC’s stricter recommendation: keep children under 5 out of hot tubs. A pediatric clinician may give individualized advice for an older child with a medical condition or other risk factor.

Why hot tubs are different from swimming pools

Hot tubs are small, deep bodies of unusually warm water. That combination leaves children less margin for error. Warm water can cause overheating more quickly, while the child’s size and swimming ability may make it difficult to keep the head above water. Drowning can happen in seconds and is often silent; the CDC identifies drowning as the leading cause of death for U.S. children ages 1 to 4.

Adjustable Hot Tub Handrail, 360° Swivel Stainless Steel Safety Rail | Heavy-Duty Powder-Coated Steel Assist Handle with Anti-Slip Foam Grip, Fits Most Hot Tubs, Swim Spas & Pools, 600LBS Capacity
  • Built for lasting spa-side use: Made of stainless steel with an additional rust-resistant coating, the handrail provides two layers of protection against moisture, splashes, and outdoor exposure. This durable construction helps preserve its finish and performance through everyday hot tub use.
  • Swing it into place or out of the way: The handle rotates 360° so you can position it near the hot tub entrance when support is needed, then turn it aside when not in use. The locking mechanism helps hold the selected angle, providing a more natural and convenient reach.
  • Feel steadier getting in and out: Three support braces form a reinforced triangular structure between the center post and base plate. This design helps distribute pressure and reduce unwanted movement, providing a more stable handhold and greater confidence when entering or exiting your hot tub.
  • Set up quickly with the included hardware: All parts and screws required to assemble the handrail and slide-under base are included. Once assembled, place the base plate beneath an empty hot tub so the filled tub holds it down—no floor drilling is needed for this setup. For floor-mounted installation, please purchase anchors suitable for your specific flooring material.
  • Hold on comfortably, even with wet hands: The sponge-wrapped handle provides a softer, more comfortable gripping surface than bare metal. Its textured surface adds cushioning and friction, making the handrail easier and more comfortable to grasp during hot tub entry and exit.

There are also hazards that may not be obvious during a casual inspection:

  • Overheating: Children may not recognize or communicate dizziness, weakness, or confusion early enough.
  • Drowning: A child can slip, become tired, or lose consciousness without calling for help.
  • Suction entrapment: A drain can trap hair or a body part if the outlet or cover is defective.
  • Infection: Contaminated water and aerosols can spread respiratory, skin, or gastrointestinal illness.
  • Falls: Wet steps, decks, and spa edges can be slippery.

10 essential hot-tub safety rules for children

1. Keep children under 5 out

Do not treat a hot tub as a warm swimming pool for a toddler or preschooler. The CDC recommends excluding children younger than 5 from hot tubs. This is the safest general family rule even though some pediatric guidance gives a lower age threshold.

For a child who is 5 or older, age alone does not make hot-tub use safe. Consider the child’s health, size, ability to follow instructions, swimming ability, and the temperature and condition of the particular tub. A hotel, gym, resort, rental host, manufacturer, or local authority may impose a stricter age rule, which should be followed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask a pediatrician before allowing use if the child has a medical condition, a history of fainting or seizures, or takes medication that could affect heat tolerance. Get individualized advice rather than relying on a general age rule.

2. Never exceed 104°F (40°C)

The water should never exceed 104°F (40°C). Do not turn up the thermostat to compensate for cold weather, and do not assume that the control-panel setting proves the water is safe. A thermostat or control system can malfunction, and sunlight or other environmental conditions can raise the actual temperature. A published pediatric case report describes water becoming hotter than the nominal setting under solar and system conditions.

Check the water with a reliable floating hot-tub thermometer before the child enters. The thermometer is an additional check, not a replacement for a working control system, manufacturer instructions, or adult supervision.

Do not use the hot tub immediately after strenuous exercise or when the child has a fever. A child’s statement that the water feels comfortable is not a reliable safety test.

3. Assign one sober, undistracted water watcher

One responsible adult should be designated as the supervisor. Stay close enough to intervene immediately—within arm’s reach for a young or inexperienced child when appropriate—and keep the child’s head above water.

The water watcher must not be drinking alcohol, using a phone, reading, or assuming another adult is watching. Older siblings should not be the sole supervisors. Do not leave a child alone even briefly to answer the door, retrieve a towel, or attend to another child. If supervision changes, make a clear handoff so there is no gap.

Supervision continues around the tub, not only while the child is seated in the water. A child can fall from the deck, steps, or edge just as easily as into the tub itself.

4. Keep the session brief and monitor for overheating

Use 15 minutes or less as a conservative family limit, based on HealthyChildren’s pediatric guidance, then have the child leave the water and cool down. This is practical guidance rather than a universal federal standard; a shorter limit may be appropriate depending on the child, temperature, health, and conditions.

Remove the child immediately if you notice:

  • dizziness, weakness, headache, nausea, or vomiting;
  • unusual fatigue, sleepiness, confusion, or faintness;
  • flushed or unusually hot skin;
  • a sudden behavior change; or
  • difficulty staying alert or keeping the head above water.

Move the child to a cooler area, remove excess clothing, and offer fluids if the child is awake and able to drink. Contact a medical professional for concerning or persistent symptoms. Call emergency services for collapse, seizure, severe confusion, breathing difficulty, or loss of consciousness.

If a child is submerged or appears to have drowned, treat it as an emergency even if the child seems to recover. Call emergency services and begin appropriate rescue and CPR steps if trained and instructed to do so.

5. Lock the hot tub whenever it is not in use

Use a locked, safety-rated cover whenever the spa is not actively being used. The CPSC advises locked safety covers and constant adult supervision around spas. Keep keys, latches, release mechanisms, and access controls beyond a young child’s reach.

A cover is not a play surface, seat, or climbing platform. It is not a substitute for supervision while the tub is open. For a spa near the house, add layers of protection where appropriate:

  • a compliant barrier around the spa or access area;
  • a self-closing, self-latching gate;
  • door or gate alarms;
  • restricted access from the home; and
  • a charged emergency phone nearby.

If the cover is damaged or its hardware is missing, do not assume any generic latch will make it safe. A locking hot-tub cover or replacement latch must match the cover, spa model, and manufacturer’s installation requirements. Repair or replace it before children can access the area.

6. Keep children away from drains and suction outlets

Never allow a child to sit on, stand on, play near, or place hair or body parts over a drain or suction outlet. Suction can trap hair or a body part and cause serious injury or drowning. Tie back long hair or use a bathing cap, but understand that this is only an extra precaution—not a substitute for safe behavior and a compliant drain system.

Before use, confirm that every drain cover is present, secured, and free of cracks or other visible damage. Do not use the tub if a drain cover is loose, missing, broken, or damaged.

Do not improvise a repair or order a generic replacement based only on appearance. A compliant replacement must match the spa, sump, dimensions, flow requirements, and applicable standard. The CPSC identifies ANSI/APSP/ICC-16 as the successor standard incorporated for drain-cover compliance under the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified spa-service professional to identify the correct part and installation method.

7. Check water chemistry and cleanliness

Children should not swallow hot-tub water, and anyone with diarrhea should stay out. Showering before entering helps reduce contamination. Hot-tub water and contaminated mists can spread respiratory, skin, and gastrointestinal illness.

For a private spa, use spa water test strips to check disinfectant and pH according to the product instructions, spa instructions, and applicable local requirements. The CDC’s current hot-tub guidance lists these target conditions:

Water measure CDC hot-tub guidance
Chlorine At least 3 parts per million (ppm)
Bromine 4–8 ppm
pH 7.0–7.8

If chlorine is above 10 ppm or bromine is above 8 ppm, do not enter; speak with the owner or operator and follow the facility or product instructions. Test strips support routine checking but do not make unknown or poorly maintained water safe.

Water that looks clear is not necessarily properly disinfected. A strong chemical smell is not proof that a tub is clean; the CDC notes that a properly chlorinated hot tub has little odor and that a strong chemical smell may signal a problem. Leave the tub and notify the operator if the water is cloudy, the surfaces are sticky or slippery, or the surrounding area appears poorly maintained.

8. Inspect hotel, gym, resort, and rental hot tubs

Do not assume a public or rental hot tub is safe because it is professionally operated, shown in a listing, or covered when you arrive. Inspect it before a child enters.

  • Read the posted age and use rules.
  • Verify the actual water temperature.
  • Look at the water clarity and surrounding surfaces.
  • Check that drain covers appear present, secure, and undamaged.
  • Look for slippery decks, unstable steps, and trip hazards.
  • Ask about recent sanitizer and pH checks.
  • Check the latest inspection information where it is posted or available.
  • Identify rescue equipment and, when possible, the emergency pump shutoff.
  • Confirm that a responsible adult can supervise without distraction.

For a rental home, keep children out if the temperature cannot be verified, the cover cannot be locked, the drain cover is damaged, or water chemistry is unknown. Report maintenance defects to the host or operator rather than attempting a repair yourself.

9. Avoid alcohol, illness, and risky combinations

Adults should not drink alcohol before or during hot-tub use. Alcohol impairs judgment and increases the danger of a child drowning while an adult is supervising.

Children should stay out if they have a fever, diarrhea, vomiting, signs of dehydration, or symptoms of overheating. A pregnant caregiver should consult a health-care provider before using a hot tub. That caregiver can supervise from outside the water; the supervising adult does not need to enter the spa.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also prohibit running, rough play, dunking, breath-holding contests, and horseplay. Keep toys and objects from obstructing the supervisor’s view or creating a trip hazard.

10. Keep emergency equipment and information close

Keep a charged phone, suitable rescue equipment, and the location of the pump or emergency shutoff accessible. Adults responsible for children around water should know how to call emergency services and should consider CPR and basic water-rescue training.

Do not enter dangerous water or attempt a rescue that puts you at risk. Call emergency services, use available rescue equipment, and follow dispatcher instructions. A rescue plan is useful only if adults know where the equipment and shutoff are before an emergency occurs.

A practical hot-tub checklist for parents

Before use

  • Is every child at least 5 years old, or has a pediatric clinician given specific advice?
  • Is the actual water temperature verified at 104°F (40°C) or below?
  • Is one sober adult assigned to supervise continuously?
  • Are all drain covers present, secure, and undamaged?
  • Is the water clear, and are the surfaces free from sticky or slippery buildup?
  • Are chlorine or bromine and pH within the applicable range?
  • Is the child free of fever, diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and overheating symptoms?
  • Are phones, alcohol, rough play, and other distractions excluded from the supervision plan?
  • Is the locked cover ready to be replaced immediately after use?

During use

  • Keep the session to 15 minutes or less as a conservative limit.
  • Keep the child’s head above water and away from drains and suction outlets.
  • Prohibit running, dunking, breath-holding contests, and rough play.
  • Watch continuously for dizziness, nausea, weakness, sleepiness, confusion, flushed skin, vomiting, or behavior changes.

After use

  • Have the child cool down, dry off, and drink fluids.
  • Check for symptoms that continue after leaving the water.
  • Replace and lock the cover immediately.
  • Record and report maintenance or water-quality problems.
  • Do not improvise repairs to drain covers, covers, latches, controls, or electrical equipment.

Safety equipment that can help—but cannot supervise a child

A floating thermometer and spa water test strips are practical additions to a layered safety plan. The thermometer helps verify the water temperature, while test strips help an owner check chlorine or bromine and pH. Neither product prevents drowning, corrects a defective drain cover, replaces a locked cover, or substitutes for a sober adult watching continuously.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cover locks and replacement latches are appropriate only when matched to the existing cover and spa model. A damaged or missing drain cover is not a casual shopping decision: have the manufacturer or qualified professional identify a compliant replacement. Professional inspection is especially important when the spa has unknown installation history, damaged suction outlets, faulty controls, or missing safety documentation.

When the safest answer is “no”

Keep children out of the hot tub if they are under 5, the water is above 104°F, supervision is unavailable, the cover cannot be locked, a drain cover is missing or damaged, the water chemistry is unknown, the surface is slippery, or the child is ill. Skipping one session is safer than trying to compensate for a known defect with extra caution.

For a home spa, ask the manufacturer or a qualified spa-service professional about model-specific drain covers, cover hardware, temperature controls, barriers, and maintenance. For public or rental facilities, notify the operator and use another facility if a safety problem is not corrected.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can a child use a hot tub?

The CDC recommends that children younger than 5 not use hot tubs. HealthyChildren gives an under-3 threshold, so the CDC’s more conservative under-5 rule is the better general family guideline. Older children still need close supervision and must meet the facility and manufacturer rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What temperature is safe for children in a hot tub?

Keep the water at or below 104°F (40°C), the CDC’s maximum recommendation. Verify the actual water temperature with a reliable thermometer rather than relying only on the control-panel setting.

How long can a child stay in a hot tub?

Use 15 minutes or less as a conservative limit, based on HealthyChildren pediatric guidance. Remove the child sooner if there is dizziness, nausea, headache, weakness, unusual sleepiness, confusion, vomiting, flushed skin, or a behavior change.

Is a hot-tub cover enough to keep children safe?

No. A locked safety-rated cover helps prevent unsupervised access when the tub is closed, but it is not a play surface and does not replace active supervision while the spa is open.

The Bottom Line

The safest general rule is simple: children under 5 should stay out of hot tubs. For older children, keep the water at or below 104°F (40°C), limit exposure to about 15 minutes, supervise continuously with one sober adult, keep children away from drains, maintain the water, and lock the cover as soon as the tub is no longer in use.
