What Tool Recalls Mean for Batteries, Chargers, and Compatible Accessories

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A tool recall applies only to the products and identifiers named in the official notice. A battery that shares a brand name or voltage with a recalled model is not automatically included, and a charger that fits a connector is not automatically safe. Check the tool, battery and charger identifiers against the current notice, stop using the product exactly as instructed, and obtain the specified remedy from the responsible company.

What a tool recall actually covers

A recall is a formal action for a defined product population. The notice identifies the affected tool, battery, charger or accessory by details such as model number, battery model, serial range, date code, kit configuration or sales channel. Those identifiers control the scope. The familiar brand name, a 24-volt or 48-volt label, the shape of a connector, or a similar-looking product is not enough to decide that an item is recalled.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Read the notice as a matching exercise. Identify the exact item in your possession, then compare every listed identifier. If your tool is listed but the notice limits the problem to a particular battery, the battery condition matters. If the notice names a charger, do not assume every charger sold for the same battery family is included. Conversely, do not assume an unlisted charger is safe merely because it looks like the recalled one.

A CPSC recall page is also a live safety record. The agency says its recall pages update weekly, while remedy information can change daily as a company’s operating status or replacement supply changes. Recheck the current official notice immediately before sending an item back or arranging disposal.

Recall, warning and safety notice: why the label matters

Not every CPSC action is a recall, and the remedy is not interchangeable. A recall generally establishes a company-run process such as a replacement, refund, repair or return. A CPSC warning may instead tell consumers to stop using a named product and dispose of it. Follow the action and remedy in the notice you found; do not substitute the process from another case.

Type of notice What it means for the reader Documented action
Product recall The company has identified specified products and provides a remedy for those products. The Kobalt USB-C yard-tool recall directs owners to stop a specific charging practice and contact Greenworks Tools for a replacement package.
CPSC compatibility warning The agency is warning about named products and an identified risk; it is not the same as a power-tool recall. The SafPow SPC-42020 and AMPOWSURE ASP-C10S42020 warning tells consumers to stop using and dispose of the named chargers.
Charger safety warning The warning concerns the named charger and its reported failure mode, not every charger or battery in the category. The Garberiel warning advises consumers to unplug and dispose of the named chargers.

A warning can be urgent even when it does not offer a replacement. Treat “stop using” as an immediate instruction, not as a suggestion to keep using the product until a substitute arrives.

Current example: Kobalt USB-C yard-tool battery recall

On July 9, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that Greenworks Tools recalled about 554,780 Kobalt 24V and 48V yard tools and batteries that use USB-C batteries. The affected product types include trimmers, blowers, mowers, chainsaws and pruning saws.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The hazard is narrowly defined. Charging a lithium-ion battery through its USB-C port while that battery is inserted in a yard tool can cause a short circuit and a fire hazard. CPSC reported 34 reports of smoke, sparking or fire in that circumstance. It reported no injuries or property damage for this recall. Those figures describe this recall only; they are not a general failure rate for all lithium-ion tools or USB-C charging systems.

Only products with the USB-C batteries are included. A Kobalt nameplate or a 24V or 48V rating, by itself, does not establish coverage. Use the notice’s product and battery model lists and verify the identifiers on your own equipment.

What to do if your Kobalt product matches

  1. Stop the hazardous charging method immediately. Do not charge the battery through its USB-C port while it is inserted in a yard power tool.
  2. Record the identifiers. Photograph or write down the tool model and the battery model before contacting the company. Keep the battery and tool together while you verify the listing.
  3. Contact Greenworks Tools through the recall process. Use the contact route and eligibility instructions in the current official notice.
  4. Use the stated replacement package. The announced remedy is a free replacement battery without a USB-C port, a charger adapter, a warning label, an updated manual, and a prepaid shipping label with return instructions.
  5. Follow the return instructions. Do not ship a lithium-ion battery in a way the notice does not authorize, and do not discard the recalled battery unless the notice specifically tells you to do so.

Do not buy a generic battery or charger as a substitute for this remedy. The replacement is designed around the identified hazard and the company’s return process.

How to check whether your tool, battery or charger is covered

Use the product itself, not memory of where you bought it. A practical check has three parts: identify, compare and confirm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Identify every relevant component

  • Tool: Look for the model label on the housing, battery bay, handle, underside or near the rating plate. Record the complete model string, including letters, suffixes and revision characters.
  • Battery: Read the label on the battery casing. Capture the battery model, voltage, capacity and any date or serial information shown. In the Kobalt case, the presence of a USB-C port is a critical feature, but the model list still controls coverage.
  • Charger or adapter: Record the charger model printed on its label, not only its output voltage, plug style or color. If it is part of a kit, note the kit model as well.
  • Accessory: For an adapter, cable or docking component, record its model and the tool or battery system it was sold with.

2. Compare with the exact notice

Open the current CPSC notice and the manufacturer’s remedy instructions. Compare the complete model and battery details, then check photographs, kit descriptions and sales dates where the notice provides them. If one component is listed and another is not, follow the notice’s wording about whether the remedy covers the complete kit or only the named component.

3. Confirm ambiguous cases before use

If a label is worn, incomplete or missing, do not infer safety from the connector or voltage. Ask the manufacturer or recall administrator to identify the product from photographs, serial information or purchase records. Until the status is confirmed, do not perform the charging or operating action that the notice identifies as hazardous.

Why a plug that fits does not prove compatibility

Electrical compatibility involves more than a connector. A charger and battery must be designed to work together in voltage, current, charging control, protection circuitry, temperature monitoring and physical configuration. A charger can fit mechanically while still being unsuitable for the battery’s chemistry or control system.

CPSC’s September 5, 2024 warning about the SafPow SPC-42020 and AMPOWSURE ASP-C10S42020 chargers demonstrates the point. The chargers were marketed as “universal” for broad categories of micromobility products, including 36-volt lithium batteries. CPSC said they were not universal and could be incompatible with some products for which they were advertised; an incompatible battery can ignite.

The warning covered the named chargers, not every charger for every 36-volt battery. CPSC reported 47 fire or other thermal incidents involving those chargers, including three reports of burn and smoke-inhalation injuries and three reports of property damage totaling $100,200. Keep those figures attached to that specific warning; they do not predict the risk of another charger.

Before using a different charger

  • Do not rely on a matching barrel plug, USB connector or advertised voltage alone.
  • Do not treat “universal,” “multi-brand” or “compatible” language as proof of approval for your exact battery model.
  • Check the battery and charger models against the manufacturer’s compatibility documentation and any current CPSC action.
  • If the original charger is recalled or the combination is uncertain, ask the responsible manufacturer for the approved remedy rather than experimenting with an adapter.

Historical power-tool charger recall: what it shows

In a historical Alltrade recall involving chargers supplied with certain Kawasaki-branded power-tool kits, consumers were told to stop using the affected chargers and register for a free compatible replacement charger. This example illustrates why the remedy must be followed for the exact kit and charger named in a notice. It is not a current recall and is not a recommendation for aftermarket replacements.

The replacement wording also matters. A “compatible replacement” supplied through the recall process is different from selecting an unverified charger because its plug fits. Preserve the model and kit information until the company confirms eligibility.

Another warning: Garberiel lithium-ion chargers

On October 10, 2024, CPSC warned consumers about Garberiel lithium-ion chargers manufactured by Jisell Inc. The agency said the chargers could overheat when plugged into an outlet, arc and cause fires. CPSC reported six incidents associated with the chargers since 2019, including a fatal fire in December 2019.

This warning concerns the named third-party chargers. It does not mean that all chargers, all lithium-ion batteries or all tool charging systems share that defect. For a charger that matches the warning, unplug it and follow CPSC’s direction to dispose of it. Do not pass it to another user or keep it for a different battery.

What to do with a recalled lithium-ion battery or charger

First determine which instruction applies. The Kobalt recall provides a return process and prepaid shipping label; the SafPow, AMPOWSURE and Garberiel warnings direct consumers to stop using and dispose of named chargers. These are different action paths.

  1. Stop the stated use. Disconnect a charger when the notice says to unplug it. For the Kobalt case, stop USB-C charging while the battery is installed in the tool.
  2. Do not improvise a repair. Do not open a battery pack, bypass protection, replace cells or add an unapproved adapter.
  3. Follow the notice’s handling and shipping instructions. Use the supplied label and packaging instructions when a recall administrator provides them.
  4. For a disposal warning, use the disposal route specified by the notice or the responsible authority. Do not put a product into ordinary disposal streams unless the instructions expressly allow it.
  5. Keep proof of the case. Save the notice, confirmation number, photographs and shipping receipt until the remedy or disposal process is complete.

If a battery is hot, smoking, sparking or burning, move away and contact emergency services when necessary. Do not handle a visibly failing battery to obtain a model number. Identification can wait until the immediate hazard is controlled.

How replacement and remedy processes work

The notice should tell you who administers the remedy, what information is required and what happens next. A company may ask for a model number, photographs, proof of purchase or a serial number. Provide only the information requested through the official channel and keep a record of your submission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remedies differ by product. In the Kobalt case, the announced package combines a redesigned battery without a USB-C port with a charger adapter, warning label, updated manual and prepaid return label. In the historical Kawasaki-kit case, the action was registration for a free compatible replacement charger. A warning such as Garberiel’s does not establish a replacement program; its instruction is to unplug and dispose of the named charger.

If a remedy appears unavailable, check the CPSC page again and contact the administrator listed in the notice. CPSC says remedy data can change daily, so an earlier message about inventory or company status may no longer be current.

Common mistakes that increase risk

  • Checking only the brand: A brand can sell many generations and configurations. Match the full identifiers.
  • Checking only voltage: Two 24V or 36V products can require different charging controls.
  • Assuming the whole product family is recalled: The Kobalt action is limited to products using the specified USB-C batteries.
  • Replacing a recalled charger with a generic model: Mechanical fit and “universal” marketing do not establish safe compatibility.
  • Continuing use while waiting for a remedy: Follow the immediate stop-use or stop-charging instruction first.
  • Discarding a recall item without reading the remedy: A recall may require return for a replacement, while a warning may require disposal.
  • Relying on an old screenshot or listing: Recall pages and remedy availability change; verify the current notice.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Write down the exact tool, battery, charger and accessory model numbers.
  2. Check the current CPSC notice for those identifiers and any required feature, such as a USB-C battery port.
  3. Read the hazard statement and identify the action that must stop immediately.
  4. Determine whether the notice is a recall with a company remedy or a warning with a stop-use and disposal instruction.
  5. Contact the named manufacturer or recall administrator through the official notice.
  6. Use only the replacement, adapter or return method specified for that case.
  7. Recheck the notice before acting because CPSC pages update weekly and remedy data may change daily.

What this means for contractors and homeowners

For a shared tool fleet, record each battery and charger separately rather than treating a drawer of similar equipment as one product. Quarantine an item that matches a notice, label it with its model and status, and tell every user which charging action is prohibited. A matching connector should never be used as the fleet’s compatibility policy.

For a homeowner, the same discipline prevents a common error: identifying a product by the name printed on the tool while overlooking the battery that creates the recall condition. Keep the tool, battery and charger labels visible when contacting the manufacturer, and do not substitute a product bought from an unverified marketplace listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Tool recalls are identifier-specific safety instructions, not broad judgments about an entire brand, voltage class or battery technology. Verify the exact model and battery details, stop the hazardous use named in the notice, and follow the remedy or disposal path for that case. If a charger fits but its compatibility is uncertain, do not use it until the manufacturer confirms it. Check the current CPSC notice again before taking action because both recall coverage and remedy availability can change.
