What Torque Setting Should You Use for Lug Nuts?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single safe torque setting for every lug nut. Use the wheel-nut torque specification in the owner’s manual or service information for the exact vehicle, model year, wheel, and lug-nut configuration. A number that is correct for one package can be wrong for another.

For example, Ford Performance lists 150 lb-ft (204 Nm) for certain 2025–26 model-year F-150 packages and 100 lb-ft (135 Nm) for a 2025 Bronco Coastal Package. Those figures are manufacturer instructions for the named packages, not general settings. The reliable process is to identify the vehicle and wheel setup, confirm the published specification, then apply it with a suitable torque wrench under the stated thread and tightening conditions.

Why lug-nut torque is vehicle-specific

Lug nuts clamp the wheel to the hub. The specified torque is the tightening level selected for that vehicle’s studs, nuts, wheel material, hub design, and hardware. Change the vehicle, model year, wheel package, or replacement hardware and the correct value may change with it.

That is why a remembered “standard” number is not a safe substitute for service information. Even two packages from the same manufacturer can have different specifications. The vehicle identification and the wheel hardware must be treated as part of the torque specification, not as details to check afterward.

Identify more than the badge

Before reaching for a wrench, record the make, model, model year, body or cab configuration, and the exact wheel package. Note whether the wheels and nuts are original or replacements. Package names matter: the published F-150 value below applies to specific Super Crew XLT regional packages, while the Bronco value applies to a named Coastal Package.

Wheel nuts, studs, and replacement hardware matter

Confirm that the nuts match the wheel’s seat and the vehicle’s studs. A replacement lug-nut kit is not automatically interchangeable with the hardware already on the vehicle. Ford’s listing of the M-1012-FA lug-nut kit for specified fitments illustrates the point: compatibility must be checked for the particular vehicle and wheel, rather than assumed from appearance.

Manufacturer examples: useful evidence, not universal settings

The following figures show why the title cannot be answered with one number. They are examples from Ford Performance package instructions. Apply them only when your vehicle and package match exactly.

F-150 package: 150 lb-ft (204 Nm)

The 2025–26MY F-150 Super Crew XLT Black Pack and Black Pack Plus Regional Package instructions specify 150 lb-ft (204 Nm). The value is tied to clean, dry wheel-stud and wheel-nut threads. The instructions call for a star/cross tightening pattern, final tightening with the truck resting on its tires, and retightening within 160 km (100 mi) after a wheel is reinstalled.

They also warn that failing to use the star/cross pattern can contribute to brake-disc runout, roughness, shudder, and vibration. Those are consequences identified in that package instruction; they are not a reason to transfer 150 lb-ft to another truck.

Bronco Coastal Package: 100 lb-ft (135 Nm)

The 2025MY Bronco Coastal Package instructions specify 100 lb-ft (135 Nm), again with clean, dry wheel-stud and wheel-nut threads and a 160 km (100 mi) retightening instruction after wheel reinstallation. The package summary does not establish a tightening pattern or final tightening position, so use the complete vehicle or package instructions for those details instead of borrowing the F-150 procedure.

How to find the correct specification for your vehicle

  1. Start with the owner’s manual. Look under wheel removal and installation, changing a flat, wheels and tires, or specifications. Use the entry for your exact model year and configuration.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s service information. If the manual does not cover the wheel package or replacement hardware, use the vehicle maker’s service documentation or the instructions supplied with the wheel package.
  3. Match the hardware. Verify the wheel type, nut seat, stud size, and any package-specific hardware. If a wheel or nut has been changed, do not assume the original specification still applies without confirmation.
  4. Record the units exactly as published. The specification may be given in lb-ft, Nm, or both. Set the wrench to the published unit; do not silently substitute a number from a different unit system.
  5. Resolve conflicts before tightening. If the owner’s manual, wheel instructions, and replacement-hardware documentation disagree, stop and obtain clarification from the vehicle or wheel manufacturer. A guessed compromise is not a specification.

Step-by-step: applying the specified torque

Once the correct value and conditions are confirmed, use a controlled installation process. The exact vehicle instructions take priority if they differ from this sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Make the work area safe. Park on a firm, level surface, secure the vehicle as directed by its manual, and support it correctly while the wheel is off. Do not perform final torqueing while relying on an unstable lifting arrangement.
  2. Inspect the mating parts. Check the wheel’s mounting face, studs, and nuts for dirt, damage, or contamination. The cited Ford instructions require clean, dry threads. Do not apply lubricant or anti-seize where the manufacturer specifies a clean, dry condition unless the applicable instructions explicitly tell you to do so.
  3. Install the wheel and start each nut by hand. Engage the threads carefully and make sure the nut is seated correctly against the wheel. If a nut does not start smoothly, remove it and investigate rather than forcing it with a wrench.
  4. Snug the nuts in the prescribed pattern. Where the instructions call for a star/cross pattern, tighten alternating nuts across the wheel rather than moving around the circle. This distributes clamping progressively. The F-150 instructions specifically require this pattern.
  5. Lower the vehicle enough for the tires to rest on the ground when required. The F-150 package instructions specify final tightening with the vehicle resting on its tires. Follow your vehicle’s instructions for the exact support and lowering position.
  6. Set the torque wrench to the confirmed value. Use a wrench whose operating range suits the specification and follow the wrench maker’s instructions for setting and use. The cited source specifies values but does not endorse a particular wrench type, drive size, range, or brand.
  7. Perform the final pass in the required pattern. Apply the specified torque to every nut, using the star/cross sequence where required. Do not add an extra “for luck” tightening pass after the wrench indicates the setting; that changes the applied torque.
  8. Reinstall any covers and check the wheel. Confirm that every nut is present and seated and that the wheel is secure before driving.

Thread condition is part of the torque specification

Torque is not an isolated number. The F-150 and Bronco package instructions attach their figures to clean, dry wheel-stud and wheel-nut threads. Dirt, corrosion, moisture, lubricant, or damaged threads changes the relationship between the wrench reading and the clamping force.

“The wheel nut torque specification is for clean, dry wheel stud and wheel nut threads.”

Ford Performance Parts, 2025–26MY F-150 Super Crew XLT Black Pack & Black Pack Plus Regional Package instructions

In practical terms, clean means removing contamination that would prevent the nut from seating or the threads from engaging normally. Dry means the specified condition is not a lubricated installation. If the vehicle maker gives a different preparation procedure for your hardware, that procedure controls.

Why the tightening pattern matters

A wheel with several nuts should be clamped progressively and evenly. A star or cross pattern moves from one nut to the opposite area of the wheel, reducing the chance that tightening one nut will leave another area unevenly clamped.

The cited F-150 instructions link failure to use the star/cross pattern with possible brake-disc runout, roughness, shudder, and vibration. If a wheel develops those symptoms after installation, do not simply increase the torque. Stop, check the pattern and hardware, and use the vehicle’s service procedure to diagnose the cause.

Do not transfer the F-150 pattern to a different vehicle merely because the wheel appears similar. Use the pattern stated for that vehicle; where the instructions are silent, obtain the complete procedure rather than guessing.

Retightening after a wheel is reinstalled

The cited Ford package instructions require the wheel nuts to be retightened within 160 km (100 mi) after reinstalling a wheel. This is a follow-up requirement for those instructions, not a universal distance for every vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check your own manual or wheel-package instructions for whether a recheck is required, the distance or time interval, and the method. If a recheck is specified, record the installation mileage and schedule it before the vehicle returns to regular work. This is especially practical for fleet and construction vehicles that may accumulate distance quickly between job sites.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using a generic internet number

Problem: A value copied from another vehicle is treated as a universal setting.

Correction: Identify the exact model year, wheel package, and hardware, then use the owner’s manual or service information. The 150 lb-ft F-150 example and 100 lb-ft Bronco example demonstrate why a generic figure is unsafe.

Correction: Put the required distance or time in the maintenance record. For the cited Ford packages, the instruction is within 160 km (100 mi).

A quick decision checklist

  • Do I know the exact vehicle, model year, wheel package, and lug-nut configuration?
  • Have I read the applicable owner’s manual, service information, or wheel-package instructions?
  • Does the specified value include a condition such as clean, dry threads?
  • Is there a required star/cross pattern or a specified final-tightening position?
  • Is my torque wrench suited to the published value and set to the correct units?
  • Is a post-installation retightening check required, and have I scheduled it?

If any answer is no, do not choose a number by habit. Obtain the vehicle-specific instruction first. The correct lug-nut torque is the number attached to the exact vehicle and installation conditions, not the most familiar number on a chart.
