Expect the road to change before you reach the bridge itself: advance warning signs, a lower or shifting speed limit, narrowed or shifted lanes, temporary markings, barriers, flaggers or temporary signals, queues, and possible ramp or lane closures. The arrangement can change between project phases, so follow the signs and markings in front of you rather than relying on how the bridge looked on your last trip. Check the responsible transportation agency’s current project or traffic page before leaving, then slow as directed, leave extra space, watch for stopped traffic, and merge only according to the temporary instructions and actual traffic conditions.
Why a bridge work zone can affect more than the bridge
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) defines a work zone as a highway area where construction, maintenance, or utility work is taking place. Its effects can extend beyond the cones or barriers you can see. The size and shape of the affected area vary with the road class, surroundings, traffic volume, task, time of day, and project complexity. A bridge project may therefore alter approaches, ramps, shoulders, intersections, and nearby lanes as well as the bridge deck itself. See the FHWA Work Zone overview.

Traffic control is also phase-dependent. A project may begin with shoulder work, move to a lane shift, then use a crossover or a full ramp closure. Night work can create a different pattern from daytime work. A familiar route is not a reliable guide to the current setup; the signs and markings at the site are.
Before you leave: find the current plan
Check the agency’s live information
Look for the state, county, or city transportation agency responsible for the bridge. Read its project notice, traffic map, closure list, or travel-time service on the day of travel. These sources are the best place to learn whether a lane or ramp is closed, whether a detour is active, and whether work is scheduled overnight. A general work-zone page cannot tell you the current status of a particular bridge.

Decide between the route and a detour
When an official notice identifies a disruption, compare the two practical choices rather than guessing from the bridge’s appearance.
| Choice | Check before committing | When it may make sense |
|---|---|---|
| Stay on the bridge route | Expected delay, queue length, open lanes, posted restrictions, and whether your vehicle fits the temporary geometry | The route remains open, the delay is acceptable, and official directions are clear |
| Use the agency-recommended detour | Detour distance and time, road width and condition, truck or trailer restrictions, and any secondary closures | The agency recommends it, the bridge is closed, or the temporary route is unsuitable for your vehicle |
Indiana’s transportation department (INDOT) specifically recommends researching the route and using available detours when possible. No universal “extra time” number applies: the bridge location, work phase, traffic demand, and incident activity determine the delay.

Advance warnings
Warning signs can announce a lane closure, narrowed roadway, speed reduction, workers, a detour, or a change ahead. They are intended to give you time to adjust before reaching the physical work. Regulatory signs impose instructions or restrictions, such as a posted speed, lane-use rule, or vehicle limit. Treat a temporary sign as controlling even if the permanent sign or your navigation app suggests something different.
Temporary traffic control
Depending on the site, a flagger, police or traffic-control officer, portable message sign, temporary traffic signal, or illuminated device may direct you. Obey the control that is present. A person directing traffic can stop vehicles, release one direction, or alter the expected lane order. Do not proceed because the lane appears empty if the controller has not released you.
Markings, barriers, and changed geometry
Expect temporary pavement lines, removed or covered markings, channelizing devices, concrete barriers, narrowed shoulders, and lanes that shift left or right. Construction vehicles may enter or leave through a gap. Some projects use a temporary crossover to put both directions on one side of the bridge. These are possible arrangements, not guarantees for every bridge; the current signs and markings establish the path.

How to drive through the zone
- Read the first warning early. Scan beyond the vehicle immediately ahead so you can see the queue, lane closure, or shift before you reach it.
- Reduce speed as posted and as conditions require. A posted temporary limit is the maximum under those conditions, not a target when workers, darkness, rain, or stopped traffic require slower travel.
- Create a larger gap. Leave enough following distance to stop smoothly if traffic ahead brakes. Avoid tailgating, phone use, navigation programming, eating, or other tasks that take your attention from the road.
- Choose your lane before the taper when possible. Check mirrors and blind spots, signal, and move only when the adjacent lane is clear. Do not cross a solid temporary line, barrier, or closed lane.
- Track the temporary edges. Keep the vehicle centered between the active markings or channelizing devices. Narrow lanes and altered shoulders leave less recovery room.
- Follow the person or device controlling traffic. Stop at a flagger’s paddle, red signal, or other instruction and proceed only when directed.
- Expect the pattern to continue after the bridge. Restrictions, merging, and workers may remain on the far approach. Do not accelerate immediately after crossing the deck.
Merging when a lane closes
There is no single merge rule for every work zone. Signs, traffic-control personnel, and the actual traffic condition govern. FHWA’s dynamic lane-merge guidance distinguishes between free-flowing and congested traffic:
| Traffic condition | Strategy described by FHWA | Driver response |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic is moving freely | Early merging is encouraged so vehicles leave the closing lane before the taper | Signal, check the blind spot, and merge into the open lane when a safe gap appears; do not race to the taper |
| Traffic is slow or queued | Drivers use both lanes to the merge point, then take turns in an alternating “zipper” pattern | Keep moving in your lane, maintain a safe gap, and allow one vehicle from the other lane to enter at the merge point unless signs direct otherwise |
This is a description of a particular traffic-management strategy, not a law that overrides local instructions. If a sign says “merge now,” a lane is physically blocked, or a flagger directs a different sequence, follow that instruction. Never use the open shoulder or a closed lane to pass the queue.
Queues, sudden braking, and the riskiest points
INDOT states that rear-end crashes are the most common type of work-zone crash. Its work-zone safety information identifies following too closely, unsafe lane movement, inattention, and unsafe speed among common police-noted causes. Entry and exit areas, where vehicles slow, merge, or change lanes, deserve particular attention.
- Look several vehicles ahead for brake lights and a stationary queue.
- Ease off the accelerator early instead of waiting to brake hard at the last moment.
- Keep the gap open even if another driver merges into it; rebuild the space gradually.
- Do not stop in a live travel lane unless traffic control or an emergency requires it.
- Watch mirrors for fast traffic approaching from behind and keep your movements predictable.
For context, FHWA said in a November 5, 2024 announcement that four out of five work-zone fatalities involved drivers or passengers. That national statement covers work zones generally, not bridge projects alone. INDOT reported 33 people killed and more than 1,750 injured in Indiana work zones in 2023; those figures are state-specific and are not bridge-only totals.
Night work, detours, and changing phases
Night work
Agencies may schedule work at night to reduce peak-period disruption. Darkness can make temporary lines, workers, equipment, and lane edges harder to see, while a night closure may be replaced by a different daytime arrangement. Reduce speed to the visible conditions, use headlights correctly, and avoid looking directly into work lights. Confirm the scheduled hours through the agency’s notice rather than assuming the bridge is open because it was open earlier.

Ramps and crossovers
A bridge project may close an entrance or exit ramp, route traffic through a temporary signal, or move both directions onto a crossover. Follow the signed detour from the point where it begins; turning around at a barrier or improvising a local shortcut can place you in a closed work area. Check whether the detour accommodates your vehicle’s height, width, weight, and turning radius.
Phase changes
Every phase can relocate the taper, change which lane is open, or alter the speed limit. Before a return trip, check the agency page again. A route that was straightforward yesterday may have a new crossover or a different ramp closure today.
Advice for trucks, trailers, and wide loads
Large vehicles have less clearance when lanes narrow or shift. FHWA notes that commercial-motor-vehicle safety depends on lane width, shoulder width and condition, buffer space, and the geometry of transitions and crossovers. Before departure, read local project notices for width, height, weight, or vehicle-class restrictions. Approach a tight shift slowly, allow extra space to track the rear of the trailer, and avoid changing lanes in the taper. If the official detour has a low clearance, weak bridge, or restrictive turn, select an approved route before reaching the closure.

The queue appears suddenly
Release the accelerator, activate hazard awareness without making abrupt maneuvers, and brake progressively while watching the traffic behind you. Keep the vehicle aligned in its lane and leave an escape space if one exists; do not drive onto the shoulder unless directed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou are in the lane that closes
Continue at a controlled speed until the signed merge point when the lane remains open and the traffic is slow. Signal, check the adjacent lane, and take turns. If the lane is blocked earlier by barriers or a vehicle, merge at the first safe opening instead.

A flagger and signal seem to conflict
Stop and follow the authorized traffic controller at the scene. If the situation is unclear, remain stopped rather than passing the flagger or entering the work space.
Your navigation app shows a different route
Treat the physical signs, temporary signals, and agency instructions as authoritative. Navigation data can lag a phase change or show a road that is technically open but unsuitable for your vehicle.
You reach a full closure
Do not attempt to move barriers or follow another vehicle through. Use the signed or agency-recommended detour. If no route is clear, pull over only where legally and safely permitted and obtain current instructions from the responsible transportation agency.
What cannot be answered without the bridge location
Whether a particular bridge will be closed, how many minutes to add, which lane will be open, and when work will finish are project-specific facts. The available guidance does not establish a schedule, closure status, or universal speed reduction for any named bridge. Confirm those details with the relevant state or local transportation agency immediately before travel. Traffic laws, penalties, temporary-control practices, and information services also vary by jurisdiction; the guidance here is U.S.-oriented and draws on FHWA material plus Indiana examples.
