For a U.S. laborer or helper, expect physical work, site-specific safety rules, and on-the-job guidance; an apprentice or helper assigned to a particular trade may have a narrower role. Duties, schedules, training and requirements vary by employer, crew, project and location.
What you may do during a typical workday
Construction laborers and helpers support crews and keep work moving. The exact assignment depends on the job and the stage of the project, so a new worker might rotate among tasks rather than repeat the same work every day.

- Move, carry, load or unload materials and tools.
- Clear and prepare work areas, then clean up tools, equipment and debris.
- Dig or backfill trenches and compact earth.
- Help assemble or dismantle bracing and scaffolding.
- Set up equipment, maintain tools, or assist tradespeople such as electricians and plumbers.
- Use hand or power tools when instructed and authorized.
A laborer may be assigned across different tasks; a helper or apprentice attached to a particular trade may spend more time supporting that trade. You may first watch an experienced worker demonstrate a task, then try it under guidance.
What the physical conditions and schedule can be like
Laborer and helper work is physically demanding and often outdoors, where weather can affect the work. Some projects involve working at heights or in confined spaces, and travel to job sites may be part of the job. Most people in these occupations work full time, but hours and conditions are not uniform: highway and bridge work can include overnight shifts, and weather can limit work seasonally in some regions. Ask about the specific site, shift, overtime expectations and travel before accepting an offer.

What to expect on your first day
Plan to learn where to report, who supervises you and what the crew is doing before starting a task. The site’s orientation should explain relevant hazards, emergency procedures, required protective equipment and any training needed for the work. If a task, tool or work area is unfamiliar, pause and ask for instruction rather than guessing.
Useful questions for your supervisor include:
- Where should I report, and who is my lead?
- What hazards are present in today’s work area?
- What is the emergency procedure, and where is the muster point?
- What training do I need before using this tool or entering this area?
- What protective equipment is required, and what does the employer provide?
These are practical prompts, not a universal legal checklist. Site rules and applicable requirements depend on the work and jurisdiction. OSHA’s guidance for young workers says they should receive safety and health training and supervision about workplace hazards and safe work practices. Its construction industry guidance advises teens to be trained before starting work or a new task, learn about hazards and emergencies, and use appropriate protective gear. Check with your employer about the orientation and rules that apply to your site.

Safety gear and training are part of the job
Construction work has risks including slips, falls and contact with objects or equipment. Following site procedures and using required protective equipment can help reduce risk. Hard hats and steel-toed shoes are examples of protective gear cited by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), but they are not a complete or universal list for every task or site. Confirm what your employer requires and supplies before buying gear; if boots are required, ask which safety-toe type meets the site’s rules.

Do you need experience or a particular credential?
For U.S. construction laborers and helpers, formal education is not typically required, although some employers prefer a high-school credential. BLS data from its 2025 Occupational Requirements Survey describe the occupation—not any individual employer’s policy—as follows:
| Requirement measured | Share of construction laborers |
|---|---|
| Prior work experience required | 11.4% |
| On-the-job training required | 84.2% |
| No minimum education required | 82.0% |
These figures do not guarantee that a particular employer will hire without experience, training or credentials. An employer may require OSHA-related safety certification before or after hiring, and some employers require a driver’s license. Ask what is required for the exact role and when each requirement must be met.

What pay and job outlook figures can—and cannot—tell you
For U.S. context, BLS reports a May 2025 median annual wage of $46,680 for construction laborers and helpers, with separate medians of $47,120 for construction laborers and $43,260 for construction trades helpers. These are national occupational medians, not starting-wage promises; location, trade, employer, hours and experience affect what an individual job pays.

BLS projects 6% employment growth for construction laborers and helpers from 2025 to 2035, and about 137,000 openings per year on average over that period. Many projected openings are expected to come from replacing workers who leave the occupation or transfer to other work. Neither projection tells you whether a specific employer is hiring or what schedule a particular opening offers.

How to compare first-job offers
When comparing opportunities, look beyond the job title. Ask each employer for details you can compare directly:
- Which trade, crew and tasks the role supports.
- Whether training is paid and whether an apprenticeship is available.
- Shift hours, overtime expectations and possible seasonal interruptions.
- Whether you will travel between sites and how the commute works.
- Wage, benefits and how hours are scheduled.
- Required certifications or license, and when they must be obtained.
- Required protective equipment, what the employer supplies, and who supervises and trains new workers.
For current occupation-wide U.S. figures, see the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Construction Laborers and Helpers and the BLS Occupational Requirements Survey fact sheet for construction laborers.
