Check each program’s requirements before applying
There is no single eligibility checklist for every apprenticeship. NYS DOL says minimum requirements are set by each employer. Many programs require a high school diploma or equivalent; some also require particular high school courses, prior experience, occupation-related coursework, or physical qualifications. The sponsor’s individual recruitment notice is the controlling guide.

Example: BAC Local 1 of Hudson Valley
The NYS DOL notice for BAC Local 1 of Hudson Valley described a planned recruitment for 10 bricklayer, mason, and plasterer apprentices, running March 2, 2026 through March 1, 2027. The notice said applications were available at Local Union #5, 1 Scobie Drive, Newburgh, from 8 a.m. to noon every Monday except holidays, with applications due by March 1, 2027. Its stated requirements included being at least 18, having a high school diploma or equivalency, being physically able to perform the work, and passing a drug test upon an offer. It also flagged work in different weather, travel, and comfort with heights and scaffolds or lifts.
#1 Best Overall
Those dates and instructions are specific to that recruitment and may change; confirm them with the sponsor before traveling or applying. The requirements illustrate why applicants should not assume one trade’s criteria apply to another.
Understand how apprenticeship training and costs work
NYS DOL describes registered apprentices as employees who learn through supervised on-the-job work with experienced journeyworkers and related classroom instruction. Training is usually offered at no cost to the apprentice, but rare arrangements may require payment for instruction or repayment if the apprentice leaves before completing the program. Ask the sponsor to explain any charges or repayment terms before signing.
Rank #2
Successful completion earns a NYS DOL Certificate of Completion, which the department describes as nationally recognized. NYS DOL says every New York State registered apprenticeship program is monitored by a Department of Labor Apprenticeship Training Representative.
Verify the sponsor and get local help
Use the state’s active sponsor directory to check registered sponsors, their registered trades, approval dates, and mailing addresses. NYS DOL says it updates the directory each weekday barring technical difficulties. An employer may participate in a group or joint apprenticeship committee program without appearing under its own name in the directory, so contact the sponsor to confirm whether a particular employer participates.
For local assistance, the Hudson Valley (White Plains) NYS DOL field office serves Westchester, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, and Ulster counties. The state’s apprentice guidance also directs applicants to local offices, current opportunities, the Job Bank, and area organizations that train through apprenticeship.
