What to Do When Tree Roots Keep Getting Into Your Sewer Line

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If tree roots keep returning to your sewer line, stop treating each backup as an isolated clog. Arrange a sewer-camera inspection, identify exactly where roots enter, determine whether the pipe is cracked or otherwise failing, and confirm whether you or the local utility owns that section. Cutting or jetting can restore flow, but a lasting repair usually requires sealing the opening with a suitable liner or replacing the damaged pipe.

Act differently if sewage is backing up now: stop using fixtures connected to the affected line, keep people and pets away from contaminated water, and call a qualified sewer plumber or the utility if the blockage could be in public infrastructure.

Why roots get into sewer pipes

Tree roots seek moisture and nutrients. A sound, watertight sewer pipe normally gives them no route inside, but leaking joints, cracks, separated connections, holes and other defects can release moisture into the surrounding soil. Fine roots find that leak, enter the opening and branch inside the pipe.

Inside the line, the roots catch toilet paper, grease and other solids. The resulting mat narrows the flow path and can worsen the original defect. Slow drains, gurgling, foul odors and repeated sewage backups are common warning signs. Root growth is evidence that the pipe needs investigation; it is not, by itself, proof that a particular tree must be removed.

Roots can remain in the soil after a tree is cut down, and an existing root mass can continue obstructing a pipe. Removing vegetation without repairing the sewer opening therefore may not solve the problem.

What to do during an active sewer backup

  1. Stop adding water. Do not flush toilets, run washing machines, take showers or repeatedly open faucets to “test” the line. Water entering the lateral can push sewage farther into the house.
  2. Keep clear of wastewater. Sewage can contain pathogens. Keep children and pets away, avoid skin contact, and follow local public-health advice for cleaning and disinfection.
  3. Call the right party. Contact a qualified sewer plumber for a private lateral. If the blockage may be in a public sewer, call the local sewer utility first; it may need to inspect or protect public infrastructure.
  4. Document what happened. Note which fixtures are affected, when the backup began, whether neighboring properties have symptoms, and where cleanouts are located. Photos can help with an insurance or ownership discussion.

Do not pour corrosive drain chemicals into a backed-up sewer. They rarely remove an established root mass, can damage some piping, and create a hazard for the technician who later opens the line.

Start with a camera inspection, not another blind cleaning

A cutter or hydro-jet may make drains run again, but recurring blockages mean the pipe must be assessed. Request a camera inspection that follows the lateral from an accessible cleanout toward the street and, where possible, toward the building. Municipal guidance recommends video inspection to assess the lateral, not just the visible obstruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the inspection should establish

  • The precise distance and clock position of each root entry.
  • Whether roots are entering at a joint, a crack, an offset connection, a hole or a collapsed section.
  • The pipe material and approximate diameter.
  • Whether the pipe has standing water, heavy scale, bellies, deformation or other conditions that affect cleaning or lining.
  • The location of the cleanout, property line and any public-side connection, measured from a recognizable reference.
  • Whether the camera reached the public main or stopped at an obstruction.

Ask for the video file or a written report with these findings. A statement such as “roots present” is not enough to choose between maintenance and structural work. The key question is whether the host pipe remains suitable for rehabilitation.

Confirm who owns the affected section before authorizing work

Responsibility for a sewer lateral differs among cities, districts and utilities. Some jurisdictions divide responsibility at a property line; others use the cleanout, a connection point or another defined boundary. A local district may assign different action depending on whether the defect lies before or beyond the cleanout, but that arrangement is not a nationwide rule.

  1. Find every cleanout on the property and have the plumber mark its position.
  2. Ask the municipality or sewer utility, using your service address, where private responsibility ends and public responsibility begins.
  3. Provide the utility with the camera location and footage if the defect appears beyond the private boundary.
  4. Get written confirmation of any permit, inspection or traffic-control requirement before excavation in a public easement or street.
  5. Do not assume that paying for a prior cleaning established ownership; a service visit is not a legal boundary determination.

Confirming responsibility first can prevent you from paying to repair infrastructure maintained by the utility, or from starting private work that requires municipal approval.

Choose the remedy according to the pipe’s condition

Option What it can do Main limitation When to discuss it
Root cutting Removes an obstruction and restores flow through an otherwise passable line. Does not seal the leaking joint, crack or hole; regrowth is possible. Immediate relief, preparation for inspection, or planned maintenance when the pipe is structurally sound.
Hydro-jetting Uses pressurized water to scour roots and buildup from the pipe wall. May expose or worsen a fragile pipe; it still does not repair the entry defect. When the contractor has confirmed that the pipe can safely withstand jetting.
Chemical or foaming root control May slow root regrowth as part of a maintenance plan after cleaning. Cannot repair structural defects. Product directions, discharge rules and local restrictions apply. Only after diagnosis, with a plumber’s guidance and a legal product for your location.
Pipe relining Installs a cured liner inside some existing pipes, sealing joints and small defects without full excavation. Needs a suitable, reasonably continuous host pipe and thorough root removal; severe collapse or deformation can rule it out. When the camera report confirms that the pipe’s shape, access and condition meet the liner system’s requirements.
Pipe replacement Removes the defective section and installs a new sound pipe. Often requires excavation, restoration of landscaping or hardscape, and potentially more permitting. When the pipe is structurally failing, badly offset, collapsed or unsuitable for lining.

Cleaning is a flow-restoration measure. Lining and replacement are structural repairs. A contractor should explain which category is being proposed and identify the defect it addresses.

When root cutting or hydro-jetting is the right first step

If sewage is blocked and the camera cannot pass, mechanical cutting may be necessary to reopen the line. Hydro-jetting can remove a broader layer of roots and deposits when the pipe is strong enough for the pressure. These services are also useful before a second camera pass, because a clean wall makes cracks, offsets and failed joints easier to see.

Ask the contractor to record the pipe condition before and after cleaning. If roots return quickly, repeated service calls are treating the symptom while the opening remains. Have the contractor explain the expected interval, what evidence would trigger relining or replacement, and whether the cleaning method could damage older or brittle pipe.

When relining can provide a lasting repair

A cast-in-place liner or another relining method can rehabilitate some existing laterals without opening the entire route. The liner forms a new interior surface that bridges eligible joints and cracks. It is not a universal solution: roots must be removed, the line must be accessible, and the host pipe must retain enough shape and continuity for installation.

Questions to ask about a proposed liner

  • Which defect is the liner intended to seal?
  • Has the pipe been measured for diameter, length, bends and service connections?
  • How will roots, scale and standing water be removed first?
  • How will the contractor reconnect branch lines and verify the finished liner?
  • What conditions would make excavation or replacement necessary instead?

A written proposal should identify the liner system, preparation method, access points, reconnection work, testing and restoration. Do not accept “no-dig” as proof that lining is suitable; suitability comes from the inspection findings.

When replacement is the safer choice

Replacement may be needed where the pipe has collapsed, is severely offset, has lost substantial wall strength, or cannot provide a continuous host for a liner. It can also be the practical choice when repeated cleaning has not restored reliable service or when a defective section is short and readily accessible.

Compare proposals on the same scope: excavation depth, pipe material and diameter, length replaced, connection to the public main, cleanout installation, permits, bypass pumping, testing, backfill and restoration of paving or plantings. Ask how the contractor will keep sewage flowing during the work and what happens if the camera reveals additional defects.

How to use chemical or foaming root treatments safely

Foaming sewer-line root treatments may help manage regrowth after the line has been inspected and cleaned. They are maintenance products, not structural repairs. They will not close a cracked pipe, remake a failed joint or stabilize a collapsing lateral.

  • Use only a product labeled for sewer-line use in your jurisdiction.
  • Follow the label’s dose, contact time, personal-protection and disposal directions exactly.
  • Ask the plumber whether the pipe material, septic system, treatment plant and local discharge rules make the product appropriate.
  • Do not infer a universal treatment schedule; a nationally applicable interval is not established.
  • Stop relying on treatment if backups recur, the camera shows structural damage, or the line cannot be inspected.

Preventing the next blockage

Keep the lateral structurally sound

The most effective prevention is repair of the opening that admitted roots. Schedule a follow-up camera inspection after cleaning or repair when the contractor recommends it, and keep the report with your property records. If the line is known to be vulnerable, arrange periodic inspection or cleaning before peak-use periods rather than waiting for a backup.

Plan planting around the sewer route

Before planting a tree, identify the lateral, cleanouts and any easement. Choose locations that leave enough room for future access and excavation. Local utilities or an arborist can help select species and placement, but no planting plan can compensate for a leaking pipe.

Use household fixtures wisely

  • Keep grease, wipes, paper towels and other solids out of the sewer.
  • Use strainers where appropriate and repair plumbing leaks that keep soil around the lateral wet.
  • Never flush products labeled non-flushable, even if they are marketed as disposable.
  • Report slow drainage early; a partial root obstruction is easier to inspect before it becomes a backup.

Warning signs that call for escalation

  • A backup returns soon after cutting or jetting.
  • Several fixtures drain slowly at the same time.
  • The camera shows roots entering through a crack, offset or hole rather than only a cleanable joint.
  • The camera cannot pass, or the line repeatedly fills with standing water.
  • Odors, wet spots or sinkholes appear along the lateral route.
  • The affected location may be in a street, easement or other public area.

These signs justify a structural assessment and an ownership check, not another unrecorded emergency cleaning.

A local threshold is not a universal rule

Seattle Public Utilities describes roots obstructing 50% or more of a side sewer as affecting the side sewer’s working condition. That figure is a Seattle utility reference, not a nationwide repair threshold. Pipe material, slope, flow, defect type and local rules determine what action is appropriate at a particular address.

Questions to put in writing before approving work

  • Where, measured from which reference point, do roots enter?
  • Is the defect before or beyond the cleanout, property line or utility boundary?
  • What pipe material, diameter and condition did the camera show?
  • Will the proposed work remove roots only, or seal and structurally repair the pipe?
  • Why is lining suitable, or why is replacement required?
  • What permits, inspections, shutdowns and restoration are included?
  • What evidence will show that the finished line is open and watertight?
  • What maintenance, inspection or planting precautions are recommended afterward?

Get a current written estimate from a qualified local contractor. Nationwide repair prices, chemical schedules and ownership rules cannot be stated reliably without the address and the inspection findings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I solve a root problem by removing the tree?

Not reliably. Roots may remain after removal, and the pipe opening that attracted them is still present. Have the lateral inspected and repair the defect.

How often should I use a foaming root treatment?

There is no universal schedule established for every pipe or jurisdiction. Use a legal, labeled product only after diagnosis and follow its directions and your plumber’s advice.

Is a camera inspection still needed after a drain cleaner opens the line?

Yes when roots recur or the cause is uncertain. Flow restoration does not show whether a crack, offset, collapse or leaking joint remains.
