Stop using it immediately. A hot extension cord is a warning that the cord may be overloaded or damaged. If it is safe, switch off the appliance, then unplug by gripping the plug—not the cable—and replace any hot or damaged cord. Do not touch melted insulation, exposed conductors or sparking equipment. Smoke or fire requires leaving the area and calling emergency services.
A wall outlet or switch that feels unusually warm is a separate warning: stop using it and arrange inspection by a qualified electrician. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) both advise treating abnormal heat as a fault, not something to watch while continuing to operate the appliance.

What to do right now
- Stop using the extension cord. Do not keep operating the appliance to see whether the heat goes away. CPSC says a hot cord may be overloaded and should be disconnected. CPSC Safety Alert 5032 states, “If any part of the extension cord is hot while in use, it is a warning sign that it may be overloaded.”
- Turn off the appliance if you can do so without touching a dangerous part. Use its normal power switch. If the plug, socket or cord is melted, sparking or unsafe to approach, do not handle it; move away and get professional or emergency help.
- Unplug by holding the plug body. Pulling the cable can loosen the wire-to-plug connection and create more resistance and heat. Keep your hand away from exposed metal or damaged insulation.
- Separate the cord from the appliance and wall outlet. Do not reconnect it to another outlet “for a test.” A fault can remain in the cord, plug, appliance or receptacle.
- Check for smoke or fire. Leave the area, keep others away and contact emergency services. Do not handle a burning or actively sparking cord.
- Replace the cord before the appliance is used again. Never tape over damaged insulation, fit a different plug, cut out a warm section or make another improvised repair.
ESFI’s consumer guidance is equally direct: “Never use a cord that feels hot or is damaged in any way.” See ESFI Extension Cord Safety Tips.

| Where you feel heat | What official guidance says it can indicate | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| Along much of the cable | Overloading is a common cause: too much current heats the conductors. CPSC says to check the cord’s capacity and inspect its entire length. | Disconnect the load, retire the cord and select a cord rated for the appliance’s power demand. |
| At the plug or the cord-end socket | CPSC’s home-wiring guide says hot plugs and sockets are often associated with deteriorated connections to the cord wires. | Stop using the cord. Do not twist, squeeze, open or re-terminate the plug or socket; replace it or have a qualified professional assess the equipment. |
| At the wall receptacle or switch | An unusually warm or hot receptacle or switch can signal a wiring or connection problem separate from the extension cord. | Stop using that outlet or switch and have a qualified electrician inspect it. Do not move the appliance to another outlet until the cause is understood. |
The CPSC explains the distinction in its Guide to Home Wiring Hazards: heat over the full cord is generally linked to overload, while heat concentrated at a plug or socket is often linked to a deteriorated wire connection. These are broad safety clues, not a test that identifies a fault by touch. The guidance gives no safe temperature threshold, so a cord that merely feels warm should not be judged acceptable by comparing it with a number.
When the plug or socket is damaged
Do not handle melted or sparking parts
Discoloration, soft or melted plastic, a burnt smell, crackling, visible arcing or exposed copper means the assembly may be unsafe to touch. Keep people away, avoid water and do not attempt to pull a plug that is actively arcing. If there is smoke or fire, leave immediately and call emergency services. A professional can make the equipment safe after the immediate danger is controlled.
Do not repair a household extension cord yourself
Household tape does not restore the cord’s insulation, strain relief or current-carrying capacity. Altering a plug can defeat the grounding and polarization built into the original design. Cutting away a damaged end and fitting a replacement may also leave an improperly sized or poorly secured connection. CPSC advises replacing damaged cords and warns against alterations; for a hot cord, replacement is the conservative choice.
How to choose a safe replacement cord
A new cord is appropriate only when the cord itself is the problem. It will not correct a hot wall receptacle, an appliance fault or a circuit that is already overloaded.

- Read the appliance’s power information. Use the wattage, amperage or other electrical requirement shown on its rating label or manual. If the appliance information is missing or damaged, ask the manufacturer or a qualified electrician rather than guessing.
- Match or exceed the cord’s capacity. Compare the appliance requirement with the capacity printed on the cord tag or packaging. Do not assume that a thicker-looking cable or a longer cable has a higher rating.
- Match the environment. Choose a cord marked for indoor use indoors and one specifically marked for outdoor use when it will be exposed to outdoor conditions. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for moisture, temperature and placement.
- Use a listed, intact product. Look for the safety listing and labeling required in your market. Before installation, inspect the plug, socket, jacket and strain relief for cracks, cuts, flattened areas or loose parts.
- Use one cord, not a chain. ESFI advises against connecting extension cords to one another. A chain adds connection points and voltage drop and can conceal an overloaded section.
Do not cover the replacement cord with rugs, carpets, furniture or other material that traps heat. Keep it visible and protected from crushing, sharp edges and door hinges. Never use an extension cord as permanent building wiring; if a location routinely needs one, have a qualified electrician install an appropriately placed receptacle.
Preventing the cord from overheating again
Check the load before plugging in
List every appliance connected to the cord or power strip and compare the combined demand with the cord’s rating. Motors and heating elements can impose substantial loads, and several devices on one strip can exceed its capacity even when each device works normally by itself. If the rating or appliance demand is unclear, do not energize the setup until it has been confirmed.
Keep high-heat appliances off extension cords
ESFI specifically advises against using an extension cord or power strip with heaters or fans. These appliances can draw significant current for long periods. Plug them directly into a properly installed wall receptacle when the manufacturer permits, and stop using the receptacle if it becomes warm.

Inspect before every use
- Run your eyes and hands (on intact insulation only) along the full length for cuts, abrasions, crushing, kinks, exposed conductors or soft spots.
- Check that the plug blades are straight and that the body is not cracked, loose or discolored.
- Check the cord-end socket for looseness, damage or signs of arcing.
- Confirm the indoor/outdoor marking and capacity still suit the job.
- Remove any cord that feels hot, smells burnt or shows damage; do not put it back into service after it cools.
Route it so it can shed heat and stay undamaged
Keep the cord uncovered. Do not run it under carpets, through doorways, beneath furniture or where vehicles, tools or ladders can crush it. Do not staple, nail or tightly coil an energized extension cord. A protected, visible route reduces both mechanical damage and heat buildup.

What a hot wall outlet means
A hot extension-cord plug and a hot wall receptacle are not interchangeable symptoms. If the receptacle or a switch plate feels unusually warm or hot, stop using it and arrange an inspection by a qualified electrician. CPSC’s electrical-safety release, “CPSC, National Electrical Safety Foundation Urge Consumers to Plug Into Electrical Safety”, tells consumers not to use an unusually warm or hot outlet or switch and to have qualified personnel check the wiring.
Do not remove the cover plate, tighten terminals or replace the receptacle unless you are legally qualified and equipped to perform that work. A warm outlet can involve a loose connection, damaged wiring, an overloaded circuit or a failing device. Only an inspection can determine which condition exists.

The cord became hot while running one appliance
Stop the appliance, disconnect the cord and replace it. Before using a replacement, verify that its capacity meets the appliance requirement and that the cord is suitable for the location. If the new cord also heats, stop and have the appliance and circuit assessed; repeated overheating should not be solved by trying progressively different cords.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The outlet is hot but the cord is not
Stop using that outlet or switch and call a qualified electrician. Moving the same load to another outlet may hide an installation problem and can create a second overload.
The cord is warm after being coiled for storage
Do not energize a tightly coiled cord to “see if it is okay.” Uncoil it fully, inspect every section and check its rating before use. If it has any damage, odor or abnormal heat during operation, replace it.
You need extension cords every day
Frequent reliance on extension cords can indicate that additional outlets are needed. ESFI recommends considering permanent receptacles installed where they are required instead of treating extension cords as a substitute for building wiring. See ESFI’s “Reaching to Safety: Use Extension Cords Properly.”
