The drawer under an oven may be for storing cookware, keeping already-hot food warm, or broiling. Its purpose depends on the range model—so check the drawer’s label and controls, look for a heating element or broiler rack, and confirm what the owner’s manual permits before using it. A retailer’s guide also recommends checking the controls, drawer design, and manual.
Three possible jobs for the drawer
Storage drawer
A storage drawer is intended for cookware or bakeware, but only within the limits in your range’s manual. Do not assume it stays cool while the oven is on. Manufacturers list storage and warming drawers as distinct parts on some ranges, so the drawer’s position alone does not establish its purpose (Bosch parts and owner manuals).
Warming drawer
A warming drawer holds food that is already hot; it is not a substitute for cooking or reheating cold food. Bosch says not to use one to heat cold food, with exceptions for crisping crackers, chips, or dry cereal and warming plates. Bosch’s manual cites the USDA recommendation to hold hot food at 140°F or warmer and says not to warm food for more than one hour. That limit and guidance come from Bosch’s manual; follow your own model’s manual if it specifies different instructions (Bosch owner manuals). GE likewise says its warming drawer is for holding hot cooked food at serving temperature, not heating cold food (GE warming-drawer guidance).
Broiler drawer
A broiler drawer is a cooking compartment, not a general-purpose cupboard. GE says, “Only the clean broil pan should be stored in the broiler drawer.” If your manual identifies the drawer as a broiler, use the specified broil pan and follow the model’s broiling instructions (GE broiler-drawer guidance).

How to identify your oven’s drawer
- Check the controls. Look for a WARM or WARMING DRAWER setting. A dedicated control can indicate a warming function, but confirm it in the manual.
- Inspect the drawer. Look for labels inside, a heating element, or a broiler rack. These clues help identify its function, but the model-specific manual is the deciding reference.
- Find the model number and manual. Use the model number on the appliance label to locate the owner’s manual, then check the drawer section for its intended use, what may be stored there, and any operating limits.
- Check accessory requirements. For a broiler drawer, confirm the compatible broil-pan dimensions and whether the pan is included. For storage, verify which cookware or bakeware the manual allows.
Safety rules for using the drawer
- Verify its function before putting anything inside. A drawer that looks like storage may be designed for warming or broiling.
- In a warming drawer, start with hot food. Do not use it to cook or reheat cold food. Bosch cites the USDA recommendation of 140°F or warmer for holding hot food, and its manual sets a one-hour maximum; follow the limits for your specific model.
- Use heat-safe dishes. Plastic containers and plastic wrap can melt against a hot drawer or utensil (Bosch owner manuals).
- Do not line the drawer. Thermador warns that aluminum foil or protective liners can create electric-shock or fire risks; GE warns foil can trap heat and impair performance (Thermador owner manuals; GE warming-drawer guidance).
- Release steam carefully. If the drawer is hot, open it slightly first and let steam escape before opening it fully. GE warns that hot air or steam can burn hands, face, and eyes (GE warming-drawer guidance).
