Plant lantana in a sunny spot with well-drained soil, then keep it moist while it establishes. Once rooted, it tolerates dry spells and needs little fertilizer. Choose a cultivar suited to your climate and space: lantana may be an annual or perennial depending on winter temperatures, and some types can spread aggressively in warm regions.

Where and when to plant lantana

Choose a site with full sun and soil that drains freely. Lantana tolerates a range of soil textures, but persistently wet ground can harm it. In Texas, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension recommends at least six hours of direct sun each day and about four feet of space around a mature Texas lantana plant (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension). In other regions, check the selected cultivar’s mature size before planting.

Plant in spring after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed. Clemson Extension recommends waiting at least two weeks after the last danger of frost (Clemson University Home & Garden Information Center). Lantana also suits containers, hanging baskets, raised beds, and window boxes.

How to water and feed lantana

Watering

Keep newly planted lantana moist for the first few weeks as its roots spread. Established plants withstand drought, but a long dry spell can reduce growth and flowering. During bloom, Clemson recommends a thorough weekly watering if the plant receives less than about one inch of rain that week (Clemson University Home & Garden Information Center).

Avoid frequent overhead watering. Wet foliage and poorly drained soil can contribute to disease and root rot.

Fertilizing

Landscape lantana usually needs little fertilizer. Apply a light feeding in spring; a vigorous plant may receive another light application in midsummer if it is not water-stressed. UF/IFAS recommends slow-release or controlled-release fertilizer to reduce runoff (UF/IFAS Extension). Too much fertilizer can reduce flowering and make plants more susceptible to disease. For container-grown Texas lantana, Texas A&M notes that general water-soluble 20-20-20 fertilizer may be used according to its label (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension).

How to prune lantana

Lightly shear the tips during summer to encourage repeat flowering. If a plant has outgrown its space, it can tolerate pruning by up to about one-third of its height and spread. For perennial lantana, cut it back hard in early spring, commonly to 6–12 inches; Texas A&M’s Texas lantana guidance specifies about 8 inches (Clemson University Home & Garden Information Center; Texas A&M AgriLife Extension).

Avoid hard pruning in fall in climates where it could reduce the plant’s cold hardiness.

Choosing a cultivar and growing lantana in your climate

Lantana is grown as an annual in cold climates and as a perennial in warm ones. Heavy freezes can kill it, and spring growth may not resume until the soil warms. Texas lantana is listed as hardy in USDA Zones 8–11 by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension); that range applies to Texas lantana, not necessarily every lantana cultivar or local microclimate.

Before choosing a plant, weigh its cold tolerance, mature size, upright or trailing habit, flower color, and intended use. A trailing type may suit a basket, while an upright cultivar may need room in a bed. Also consider whether the cultivar produces viable seed, especially in a warm region where lantana can spread.

Propagating lantana from seed or cuttings

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension describes propagation by seed, division, and stem cuttings (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension):

  • Seed: Collect seed from ripe berries for late-summer planting. Seed-grown plants may not retain the color or growth habit of a named cultivar, so this is not the best choice when uniform traits matter.
  • Division: Divide the root ball and replant the divisions.
  • Stem cuttings: Take cuttings several inches long, dip them in rooting hormone powder, and place them in moist, well-drained soil.

Lantana toxicity and invasive risk

Handle lantana with care around people and animals. UF/IFAS warns that the leaves are highly toxic to animals and that unripe berries are poisonous (UF/IFAS Extension). NC State classifies Lantana camara as poisonous and notes that contact can cause dermatitis (NC State Extension). Keep the plant away from grazing livestock and prevent pets or children from eating its leaves or berries.

In warm regions, some lantana can spread aggressively in disturbed areas. UF/IFAS identifies sterile cultivars including β€˜Bloomify Red,’ β€˜Bloomify Rose,’ and β€˜Luscious Royale Red Zone’; these cannot produce viable seed or pollen, reducing concerns about spread by seed (UF/IFAS Assessment of Non-Native Plants). Confirm a cultivar’s status and suitability for your area before planting.

Common lantana problems

Lantana generally has few serious pest problems, but spider mites and whiteflies may appear. Texas A&M lists insecticidal soap, used according to its label, as an option for occasional spider mites (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension). Excess water, poor drainage, and overhead irrigation can contribute to root rot, gray mold, or other diseases. If a plant declines, check drainage and watering practices before adding fertilizer or treating pests.
