A dishwasher is genuinely smart when it uses sensors, software, and connectivity to make washing more automatic, more informative, safer, or easier to schedule. Wi-Fi alone is not enough. The most useful smart features are remote status alerts, adaptive cycle selection, leak detection and diagnostics, scheduling, and practical smart-home integration.
When comparing models, ask a simple question: does the feature save time, prevent a problem, improve a decision, or automate a task you would otherwise have to remember?

1. Remote monitoring, control, and completion alerts
The most familiar smart-dishwasher feature is an app that shows whether the machine is idle, running, paused, or finished. Compatible models may also display cycle progress or remaining time, send a push notification when the load is complete, allow selected cycles to be started remotely, and save frequently used settings as Favorites.

#1 Best Overall
- QUIET OPERATION: Library Quiet technology delivers whisper-quiet 42dBA noise level for peaceful kitchen environment during operation
- SMART CONTROLS: Works with Alexa for voice control capabilities through Amazon Alexa app, featuring backlit touch controls for easy operation
- THIRD RACK DESIGN: Deep third rack provides extra capacity specifically designed for flatware and cooking utensils with adjustable positioning
- WASHING PERFORMANCE: Power Wash sprayer targets heavily soiled items with enhanced cleaning power, offering 6 wash cycles and 7 options
- PREMIUM FEATURES: Bright LED interior lighting illuminates the stainless steel tub interior, while heated dry option ensures dishes come out completely dry
Why it matters
- You can check a quiet dishwasher from another room or while away.
- You are less likely to leave clean dishes sitting inside for hours.
- Busy households can coordinate several loads more easily.
- An alert can tell you when a cycle was interrupted rather than leaving you to discover it later.
There are limits. Remote start may need to be enabled on the appliance first; the door must generally be closed and latched; and controls or safety conditions may prevent remote operation. Internet, app, or cloud-service outages can also disable remote functions. “Remote control” may mean monitoring and scheduling rather than unrestricted operation from anywhere.
Remote monitoring is convenient, but it is not necessarily the most valuable smart feature. A completion notification saves time; a leak warning may prevent a much more serious problem.
2. Smart cycles that adjust to the load
Adaptive or smart cycles use sensor readings and, in some cases, app-based information to help choose or adjust a program. Depending on the model, the dishwasher may respond to soil level, water clarity, temperature, selected dishware categories, or previous program data.
Bosch describes Smart Cycle as helping users select a suitable cycle based on the dishes and utensils being washed. Some higher-end models also offer zone-based control, directing different wash intensities toward particular rack areas.
What the sensors actually do
- Soil or turbidity sensors: assess the condition of the wash water and can help adjust the program.
- Temperature sensors: monitor water or internal temperatures.
- App-based guidance: asks what is in the load and recommends a cycle.
- Zone washing: concentrates cleaning in a selected rack or area.
This is useful automation, but it is not necessarily artificial intelligence or item-by-item recognition. Unless the manufacturer documents otherwise, do not assume the dishwasher can identify every object in the rack.

- Slimline Design with Large Capacity : The Midea built-in dishwasher boasts a slim body that takes up minimal space and is easy to fit. It features a digital control panel with an LED display and has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate larger plates, pots, and pans up to 11 inches in height.
- 8 Place Settings Dishwasher : With dimensions of 22.6D x 17.6W x 32.4H with adjustable legs, this under sink dishwasher provides a spacious and flexible interior for maximum dishware loading.
- 6 programs+3 functions : The 18-inch dishwasher offers six programs, including Heavy, Normal, ECO, Delicate, Quick, and Rinse washing programs. It also features Heated Dry, Hi-Temp, and Sanitize functions that meet all your daily needs. Note: ONLY use detergent specially for dishwasher because regular liquid dish soap will cause dishwasher problems.
- Heated Dry : Smart dishwasher ensures the best drying performance. The extra drying function offers a thorough drying performance (except for the Rapid and Self-clean cycle) with no additional towel drying required.
- HI TEMP : The HYGIENE wash cycle maintains the water temperature at 136°F (58°C) max , which can tackle even the heaviest soiled dishes. It is also suitable for cleaning baby bottles and children's dinner sets.
Sensor-assisted cycles can also take longer than expected. The machine may be optimizing cleaning and water or energy use rather than choosing the shortest possible program. Smart settings do not eliminate the need to load dishes correctly, scrape off excessive food, or keep filters and spray arms clean.
3. Leak detection, diagnostics, and maintenance alerts
Among all smart features, leak and fault notifications may deliver the greatest practical value. Compatible dishwashers can combine physical sensors with app alerts to report possible leaks, water-supply problems, drainage issues, door or latch faults, error codes, and maintenance needs.
Bosch promotes connected-appliance alerts and diagnostics, while GE SmartHQ advertises appliance alerts and software updates. The exact protection varies by model.
What a diagnostic system can—and cannot—do
Remote diagnostics usually means the appliance can identify or transmit fault information, provide care guidance, or help a service technician understand the problem. It does not necessarily mean the dishwasher can repair itself remotely or avoid a service visit.
A leak sensor may detect water in the appliance base, limit operation, and notify you. It is not a guarantee against flooding. A sensor may not detect a supply-line leak outside its sensing area, a slow plumbing leak, or damage that begins after power or connectivity has been lost.

Use proper installation, an accessible water shutoff valve, a correctly fitted supply line, and periodic inspection. If a leak alert appears:
Recommended Free Tools
- Stop or cancel the cycle if it is safe to do so.
- Look for visible water around the appliance.
- Close the water-supply valve if a leak is suspected.
- Do not repeatedly restart the dishwasher.
- Inspect supply and drain connections.
- Contact service if the alert remains or the cause is unclear.
Do not dismiss an alert simply because no water is visible outside the machine.
4. Scheduling for convenience and potentially lower energy costs
Connected dishwashers may offer delayed start, repeating schedules, preferred start times, and notifications when a scheduled cycle begins or ends. Bosch calls one version of this capability Smart Start, which can help schedule operation during preferred or off-peak periods.
When scheduling helps
- Running the dishwasher overnight or before the household wakes up.
- Avoiding peak kitchen activity.
- Using time-of-use electricity rates.
- Coordinating operation with solar generation or other household routines.
- Having clean dishes ready before breakfast or after work.
Scheduling does not automatically lower your bill. Any saving depends on your utility tariff, the difference between peak and off-peak rates, the selected cycle, water-heating costs, and when you would otherwise have run the machine. A conventional dishwasher with physical delay-start controls may provide much of the same benefit.
Some households also prefer not to run a dishwasher while asleep or away from home. Convenience and possible energy savings should be balanced against the level of supervision you want.

5. Smart-home integration and automatic supply management
On compatible models, smart-home platforms can add voice commands, shared notifications, routines, downloadable cycles, software updates, and detergent or rinse-aid tracking. Bosch lists Alexa, Google Home, selected IFTTT compatibility, Favorites, downloadable functions, and Amazon Smart Reorder for compatible detergent tablets. LG and GE also describe voice control, downloadable cycles, supply tracking, or automatic reordering on compatible products.
Check the exact model details through the manufacturer’s LG ThinQ, GE SmartHQ, or Bosch smart-dishwasher documentation. Brand-wide app claims do not guarantee that every dishwasher supports every function.
Useful integrations
- Ask for status while cooking without touching the appliance.
- Send a completion notification to a shared smart-home device.
- Add a program that the model supports but does not show on its main menu.
- Receive a reminder before detergent or rinse aid runs out.
- Reorder compatible supplies automatically where the required account and retailer service are available.
This is also the category most likely to add complexity. Voice commands may support only a limited set of actions. Automatic reordering may depend on a retailer account and specific consumables. Downloadable cycles may not improve the dishwasher’s core cleaning performance, and third-party integrations can change over time.
What does not necessarily make a dishwasher smart?
Many important dishwasher features are excellent appliance features without being connected intelligence. These include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Third racks and adjustable tines
- Quiet operation
- Stainless-steel tubs
- Heated or auto-opening drying
- Steam cleaning
- Sanitize cycles
- Zone washing
- Soil sensors
- Water-softener systems
- Leak protection without app connectivity
Some are “smart-adjacent” because they automate part of the wash. Evaluate them separately from Wi-Fi and app functions. For example, drying technology, rack layout, spray-arm design, and noise level may affect daily satisfaction more than remote control.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are smart dishwashers worth it?
| Buyer profile | Are smart features worthwhile? | Most useful capability |
|---|---|---|
| Busy household | Often yes | Completion alerts and scheduling |
| Frequent traveler | Yes, with caveats | Leak and fault alerts |
| Smart-home user | Often | Ecosystem integration |
| Budget buyer | Not necessarily | Core cleaning and reliability |
| Privacy-conscious buyer | Maybe not | Local sensors and physical controls |
| Weak Wi-Fi household | Usually not | Conventional controls and delay start |
Give smart features more weight if you run frequent loads, need leak or fault alerts, use time-of-use pricing, rely on Alexa or Google Home, often forget whether a cycle has finished, or want remote service information.
Give them less weight if you prefer simple controls, dislike appliance accounts, have unreliable Wi-Fi, do not use voice assistants, or want the fewest possible failure points. A conventional dishwasher with excellent cleaning, drying, leak protection, efficient operation, physical delay start, and strong local service may be the better purchase.

- Prioritize the appliance itself: compare cleaning, drying, noise, rack design, capacity, efficiency, warranty, and service availability before connectivity.
- Verify the exact model: confirm that it is Wi-Fi enabled and that the advertised functions are available in your region.
- Ask what works without the app: normal cycles and essential controls should remain usable locally.
- Check remote-start requirements: find out whether Remote Start must be enabled at the appliance and whether the door must remain closed and controls unlocked.
- Confirm ecosystem support: check Alexa, Google Home, IFTTT, or other integrations individually rather than assuming compatibility.
- Check account and internet requirements: ask whether an account is mandatory, whether notifications are optional, and what happens during an internet outage.
- Verify protection features: distinguish app alerts, physical leak detection, water shutoff, and remote diagnostics.
- Evaluate supply features realistically: confirm whether downloadable cycles, detergent tracking, or reordering are compatible with your preferred products and accounts.
- Review privacy and security information: read the manufacturer’s current privacy notice and account terms; use a unique password, update the app and router, limit unnecessary integrations, and remove the appliance from your account before selling it.
- Confirm installation requirements: check cabinet dimensions, electrical requirements, water connections, drainage, and shutoff access.
Common problems with smart dishwashers
Pairing fails
Check that the model supports the official app in your region, update the app, verify the Wi-Fi password, move the phone closer to the router and appliance, and enable any Bluetooth or location permissions required during setup. Router security settings or Wi-Fi-band compatibility can also matter; follow the model’s manual rather than assuming a universal requirement. If the appliance is registered to another account, manufacturer support may be needed.
Remote start does not work
Remote Start may not have been enabled, the door may not be latched, the controls may be locked, the machine may already be running, or the appliance may have lost its connection. Enable the required setting, close the door, refresh the app, and run the cycle locally if remote operation remains unavailable.
The app shows the wrong status
The appliance may have lost Wi-Fi, the app may not have refreshed, or a power interruption may have stopped the cycle. Check the physical control panel before assuming the dishwasher is operating.
Smart does not mean fully autonomous
No mainstream dishwasher loads itself, reliably identifies every item in the rack, or guarantees perfect cleaning regardless of arrangement. Loading remains one of the largest factors in the result. Push notifications can also be missed because of phone settings, battery-saving modes, app sign-out, lost internet access, or cloud-service downtime. Keep the appliance’s display, audible signal, floor light, or a manual check as a fallback.
Connected appliances may transmit information such as appliance status, usage timing, error conditions, account details, network information, and diagnostic data. That is not automatically a reason to avoid one, but it is a reason to review the manufacturer’s current privacy notice and consider whether the convenience is worth the account and cloud dependence.
