Samsung added the capability through a software update, describing it as a pilot involving curated ads alongside widgets such as weather, news, and calendars. It does not affect every Samsung refrigerator, and Samsung’s current instructions provide a way to turn Cover Screen ads off.
The controversy is straightforward: owners may have paid several thousand dollars for the refrigerator, yet Samsung can later use its built-in display as a promotional surface. That makes this less a refrigeration problem than a question about software-controlled appliances, privacy expectations, and what buyers think they are purchasing.

What Samsung actually changed
The advertising feature is limited to the Cover Screen on compatible Family Hub refrigerators. It is not evidence that advertisements appear throughout every refrigerator function, nor that ordinary Samsung refrigerators without Family Hub displays are affected.

Samsung introduced the feature through an over-the-network software update. Its announcement described a Cover Screen widget combining everyday information—including news, weather, and calendar content—with “curated advertisements.” Ads are associated with selected Cover Screen themes or modes rather than being part of the refrigerator’s cooling controls.

Samsung says owners can dismiss individual advertisements, and that a dismissed ad will not reappear during that campaign period. The company also says that Art and Album themes do not display advertisements.
Samsung’s announcement describes the rollout as a pilot for select Cover Screen themes. Coverage and behavior can therefore depend on the refrigerator model, software version, country, theme, and campaign. The most accurate description is that certain U.S. Family Hub models and software configurations can show ads—not that every Samsung smart refrigerator now does.
Samsung’s 2025 Family Hub announcement provides the company’s description of the update.

The relevant product category is Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerator platform, which includes models with integrated displays. Depending on the model, Family Hub refrigerators have used screens measuring approximately 21.5 or 32 inches. Samsung’s announcement specifically discussed 2024 Family Hub models receiving the relevant software update.
That does not establish that every Family Hub model worldwide has the same advertising feature. Newer Bespoke AI Family Hub refrigerators continue to receive software updates, but feature availability varies by model, market, network, account, and software version.
Before buying—or while troubleshooting an existing refrigerator—check the exact model number and installed software rather than relying only on the Family Hub name. Samsung also warns that menu labels can vary: one model may use Screen, while another uses Wallpaper and Style.

Samsung has not published a figure showing how much advertising revenue it expects, nor has it said that advertising reduces the refrigerator’s purchase price. The business logic, however, is apparent: Family Hub places a large connected screen in a frequently used part of the home.
Samsung presents its software updates as a way for the appliance’s value to grow after purchase. Family Hub features include widgets, recipes, shopping and food-management tools, SmartThings controls, media, Bixby, and AI-related functions, although the exact set varies by model and region. From Samsung’s perspective, the refrigerator is not merely a finished appliance; it is part of an evolving connected platform.
Advertising can be understood as another use for that installed screen fleet. It may also support Samsung’s broader strategy of putting content and services across its device ecosystem. That is business-model analysis, not a confirmed statement of Samsung’s expected advertising returns.
The consumer objection is that the owner has already paid for the hardware, display, connectivity, and premium design. Unlike a discounted streaming device or an ad-supported tablet, the refrigerator was not presented as a cheaper product in exchange for accepting advertising. Samsung receives potential promotional value, while buyers receive no stated price reduction or ad-removal subscription.

Why the premium-price criticism resonates
A refrigerator is normally treated as a long-lived physical appliance. Buyers expect the manufacturer to provide the product they purchased, subject to ordinary updates and maintenance—not to add new commercial surfaces after the sale.
Rank #2
- COUNTER DEPTH: Built-in look for a seamless fit. The smooth and streamlined exterior design features beautiful flat doors and easy-to-open recessed handles that blend seamlessly into your cabinetry, adding function and style to your kitchen.
- WiFi CONNECTIVITY: Wi-Fi connectivity on your fridge isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s essential for safety and energy conservation. You’ll get immediate notifications if the temperature drops due to a power outage or if you accidentally leave the door open.
- TWIN COOLING PLUS: Independent fridge and freezer controls keep food fresher, longer.
- ENERGY STAR CERTIFIED: Eco-friendly and energy-efficient.
- FINGERPRINT-RESISTANT FINISH: Finish that withstands everyday smudges so you spend less time cleaning.
Family Hub complicates that expectation because its screen is both part of the appliance and a software platform. A post-purchase update can change what appears on the display without changing the refrigerator’s compressor or shelves. Technically, the advertising feature is separate from refrigeration. From an owner’s perspective, however, it can feel like the terms of the product changed after purchase.
That does not by itself establish a contract violation or consumer-protection-law violation. The available evidence shows a software rollout and consumer criticism, not an adjudicated legal finding. The practical concern is about control and expectations: if a manufacturer can add advertising to a premium appliance, buyers may reasonably wonder what other parts of the interface could later become promotional space.
Are the refrigerator ads personalized?
Samsung says the Family Hub ads are contextual or non-personalized. In its Family Hub announcement, the company says the devices do not collect personal information or track consumers for this advertising feature.
That statement should be kept separate from Samsung’s broader advertising ecosystem. Samsung’s general privacy materials describe Samsung Ads as a service that can deliver personalized advertising across Samsung and third-party platforms. Those statements are not necessarily contradictory: Samsung may be distinguishing the Family Hub Cover Screen pilot from its wider advertising services.
The available evidence does not support claiming that the refrigerator definitely uses shopping lists, food-recognition data, voice recordings, or camera feeds to target these ads. It also would be too broad to say that Samsung collects no data at all. “Contextual” does not necessarily mean offline or data-free, and Family Hub’s connected functions can involve network services and Samsung accounts.
The defensible summary is: Samsung says these Family Hub ads are contextual rather than personalized and says the refrigerator does not track consumers for this feature. That is narrower than saying Samsung’s entire connected-device advertising ecosystem is non-personalized.

How to turn off Family Hub Cover Screen ads
On a compatible U.S. Family Hub refrigerator, Samsung’s documented path is:
- Open Settings on the refrigerator.
- Tap Advertisements.
- Tap Cover screen Ads.
- Turn the switch Off.
The setting is specifically documented for Cover Screen advertisements. It should not automatically be described as disabling every recommendation, notification, or promotional element elsewhere in the Family Hub software.
If “Advertisements” is missing
- Confirm that the refrigerator is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Install any available Family Hub software update.
- Restart the refrigerator interface if the on-screen instructions provide that option.
- Return to Settings and check the Advertisements menu again.
- Temporarily change the Cover Screen to Album or Art.
- If the control remains unavailable, contact Samsung support with the exact model number and software version.
Samsung’s support page says menu names may differ by model. Depending on the refrigerator, theme controls may appear under Screen and Style or Wallpaper and Style.
Disconnecting Wi-Fi is not the preferred solution. It may reduce cloud-connected advertising, but it can also interfere with SmartThings control, calendar synchronization, shopping lists, recipes, media services, AI and food-recognition updates, voice-assistant features, and future software updates. Disable the advertising setting first.
What happens after ads are disabled?
Samsung’s control targets Cover Screen ads. Core refrigeration should continue to operate, but disabling that setting should not be interpreted as a universal opt-out from every commercial message or recommendation that might appear elsewhere in the connected interface.

- LARGE CAPACITY: Completely redesigned interior with 27.4 cu. ft. capacity that fits 10% more groceries than ever.
- MODERN DESIGN: Flat panel door design with easy-to-open recessed handles blends into your cabinetry to give you a modern built-in-look.

- ALL-AROUND COOLING: The multivent technology keeps items on every shelf evenly cooled.
- INDOOR ICEMAKER: High-capacity indoor icemaker that saves shelf space for your frozen foods.
Similarly, switching to Album or Art mode is an interface workaround, not proof that all advertising services connected to a Samsung account have been disabled. The exact behavior can change with software updates, model differences, and regional availability.

Samsung’s U.S. refrigerator listings have shown Family Hub models at prices such as $3,699. That is a dated price snapshot, not a permanent price for every model: promotions, retailers, inventory, and configurations change frequently.
The number matters because the advertising dispute is not about a low-cost device subsidized by commercials. Buyers may reasonably view a premium refrigerator as a completed hardware purchase. Samsung, by contrast, is treating the built-in display as part of an ongoing software platform.

Should you buy a Family Hub refrigerator?
Make the decision on two separate axes: the refrigerator itself and the screen ecosystem.
Family Hub may make sense if you genuinely want
- Integrated family calendars and household scheduling.
- Shopping lists, recipes, and food-management tools.
- SmartThings appliance and smart-home controls.
- AI, media, voice, and other screen-based functions.
- A connected appliance that may gain features through continuing updates.
In that case, treat Samsung’s software policies, account requirements, network dependency, advertising controls, and update longevity as part of the ownership decision.
A non-Family-Hub refrigerator is likely the better fit if you want
- Reliable refrigeration without an integrated advertising surface.
- Fewer connected services and less account dependence.
- Minimal involvement with cloud-based features.
- A refrigerator that does not duplicate functions already handled by a phone or tablet.
- Less exposure to future changes in software behavior.
You can still use a separate tablet or wall-mounted display for calendars, recipes, and smart-home controls without making the refrigerator’s operation dependent on a large built-in screen. Samsung’s SmartThings ecosystem may also provide connected-home control without requiring a Family Hub display in the refrigerator.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe larger ownership question
Smart appliances can outlive the software platforms that make them attractive. Before paying a premium, ask:
- How long will Samsung provide updates for this exact model?
- Which features require Samsung’s servers or a Samsung account?
- Will the refrigerator remain fully useful if cloud services change?
- Could a future update alter the advertising controls?
- Is the screen valuable enough to justify the additional cost over a conventional model?
Samsung’s 2026 Family Hub announcement emphasizes that the appliance can gain value through software updates, but it also reinforces the central trade-off: the manufacturer retains meaningful control over the post-purchase experience. Features and service availability can vary by model, country, provider, network, and device, and may change without notice.
Verdict
Samsung is not putting ads on every refrigerator, and the current evidence does not show that the Family Hub Cover Screen pilot is secretly personalized through food-recognition cameras or shopping data. The specific feature is narrower: certain U.S. Family Hub configurations can display curated advertisements, and Samsung provides a setting to turn them off.
But the criticism is still understandable. Samsung is treating the refrigerator screen as an ongoing software platform, while many owners regard the appliance as a finished product bought upfront. The technical fix is simple; the strategic question is whether you want to pay a premium for a connected screen whose manufacturer can change how that screen is used later.
