If you saw “viraro” on lumber or flooring, it most likely refers to Pterogyne nitens, a South American hardwood also known regionally as ibirá ró, amendoim, or pau fava. Its wood is described as hard and reddish. The name is not conclusive by itself: it can refer to other trees in some regions, and it is also used for a sunglasses model.

What does viraro mean on a wood label?

In a timber or flooring context, viraro usually identifies Pterogyne nitens. Argentina’s Sistema de Información de Biodiversidad lists viraro and ibirá ró among the names associated with this species. Regional references also use names such as amendoim and pau fava. Because common names vary by place and seller, a label alone is not as precise as the botanical name.

Argentina’s biodiversity record describes Pterogyne nitens as a tree 6–20 m tall, with a trunk 20–80 cm in diameter, and notes that its wood is hard and reddish. The record places it in northern Argentine provinces and describes piedmont and Chaco forest habitats; that information does not establish the species’ full range across South America. Sistema de Información de Biodiversidad, Administración de Parques Nacionales.

What does viraro wood look like and how is it described?

WOOD Magazine describes the heartwood as reddish brown with darker streaks and reports that it is used for furniture in South America. The magazine compares its luster and rigidity favorably with mahogany and describes its density as exceeding red oak’s. Those are the magazine’s descriptive comparisons, not results from a cited standardized side-by-side test or a current lumber grade; no comparable measurements are established here. ASALE’s 2010 Diccionario de americanismos records viraró in Paraguay and northern Argentina for Pterogyne nitens, including the tree and its hard, resistant wood. It also records a separate use of viraró for species of Ruprechtia in Paraguay and Uruguay. This is why “viraro” is a useful regional trade or common name but not an unambiguous botanical identification. ASALE, Diccionario de americanismos.

How can you verify a piece sold as viraro?

  • Ask for the botanical name. For the likely lumber meaning, check whether the seller identifies it as Pterogyne nitens.
  • Check the source and region. Request the country or region of origin and any documentation the seller has. A common name can refer to different trees in different markets.
  • Use appearance as a clue, not proof. Reddish-brown heartwood with darker streaks is consistent with WOOD Magazine’s description, but appearance alone does not establish species.
  • Confirm project-specific properties separately. The cited descriptions do not supply standardized strength, durability, or grading figures for a particular board or flooring product. Ask the supplier for the relevant product documentation rather than inferring performance from the name.

Could “VIRARO” refer to something other than wood?

Yes. SINNER uses VIRARO as the name of a sunglasses model, code SISU-915-30-58. The manufacturer lists a bio-based frame, polycarbonate lenses, Category 3 lenses, and stated 100% UV protection; these are manufacturer specifications, not an independent test result.
