Stop the dryer and do not run it again while the burning smell remains. If you see smoke or flames, or the dryer stays hot after it is off, leave the area and contact emergency services. Once there is no immediate danger, check only accessible parts; arrange qualified service if the smell returns, smoke occurred, or lint may be inside the dryer cabinet.
What to do immediately
- Stop the cycle. Switch the dryer off. Do not start another cycle to test whether the smell clears.
- Respond to smoke, fire, or continuing heat. Keep clear, leave the area, and contact emergency services if there is smoke or flame, or heat continues after the dryer is off.
- Disconnect power only if it is safe and accessible. Do not approach a smoking or burning appliance, and do not open the cabinet or handle internal components.
- After the immediate danger has passed, inspect accessible areas. You can check the lint filter, visible duct, and exterior vent for obvious lint, crushing, damage, or obstruction. If the burning odor persists or returns, leave the dryer off and arrange qualified service.
Why a burning smell needs attention
Lint can accumulate in the dryer or exhaust duct, restrict airflow, and cause heat to build up. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that this can result in a fire in some dryers. A clean lint filter does not prove that the duct or the inside of the dryer is clear.
The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), citing National Fire Incident Reporting System data, says failure to clean was the leading contributing factor in 31% of U.S. home clothes-dryer fires from 2018 through 2020. Separately, a 2023 CPSC release gave a historical annual average estimate of 6,400 clothes-dryer fires, about 180 injuries, and nearly $105 million in property damage. Those are attributed estimates, not counts for the current year.
Checks you can make without opening the dryer
Clean the lint filter
When the dryer is off and safe to access, remove lint from the filter. The USFA recommends cleaning it before and after each cycle. A clear filter is routine maintenance, not a diagnosis of the full exhaust path.

Look over the visible duct and exterior vent
Check accessible ducting for crushing, damage, or an obvious restriction, and look for an obstruction at the exterior vent. Do not run the dryer while the burning odor is active to see whether the vent flap opens; that check belongs to routine maintenance after the appliance has been deemed safe to operate.
Note drying changes
Longer-than-usual drying or clothes that remain damp after a typical cycle can indicate a blocked lint screen or exhaust duct, according to the CPSC. If you notice these signs, address the airflow problem rather than continuing to use the dryer through repeated cycles.

When to call for qualified service
- The odor returns or remains after the dryer is off.
- You saw smoke, or suspect lint has accumulated inside the cabinet.
- The suspected problem requires opening the cabinet or accessing internal parts.
- There is damage, crushing, or a blockage you cannot safely clear from an accessible area.
The CPSC recommends periodic cleaning of the dryer interior by a qualified service person, and the USFA advises professional installation and service. These sources describe general fire-prevention guidance; they do not identify the faulty component in any particular dryer. If you are concerned about a model-specific problem or recall, find the brand, model, and serial number and check with the manufacturer or official recall information.
When dryer duct replacement or vent cleaning is appropriate
The CPSC recommends rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal ducting instead of plastic or foil accordion-type ducting, noting that most manufacturers specify rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct. Before replacing duct, check the dryer’s instructions and confirm that the material and installation suit the appliance and home.

A vent-cleaning brush kit may help with accessible routine vent maintenance, but it is not a remedy for an active burning smell, and a consumer tool may not clear every blockage. If lint may be inside the dryer or the odor persists, use qualified service rather than trying to reach internal areas.
