Rattan is a group of climbing palms native mainly to tropical parts of Asia and Africa. Its solid, flexible stems are stripped of their leaf sheaths and processed into cane for furniture, baskets, matting and woven goods. The word “rattan” does not, by itself, identify a product’s species, growing location or sustainability.
What is rattan?
Rattan refers to a diverse group of spiny climbing palms in the Old World tropics and subtropics. It is not one species, and it is not a synthetic material. The useful material is the plant’s stem, which becomes cane after its leaf sheaths are removed. Published species counts vary. An FAO glossary foreword reports more than 600 species, while the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew describes around 500. These are source-attributed estimates, not a single settled count. How does rattan become cane?
After harvest, the leaf sheaths are removed from the stem. The resulting cane can be used in different forms depending on the product: whole and round for furniture frames, or split, peeled or cored for woven goods, matting and basketry. The material’s form and construction matter; the word “wicker” describes a weaving style or category and does not prove that an item is made from rattan. FAO

What is rattan used for?
- Furniture: Whole cane can be used for frames, while processed cane can form woven surfaces.
- Baskets and basketry: Split or peeled cane is suitable for weaving.
- Matting and other woven goods: Cane can be processed into forms suited to these uses.
For a particular item, check the product description for its material and construction rather than assuming that a woven appearance means natural rattan. FAO
Where does rattan come from?
Rattans grow in tropical regions, including rainforests in Asia and Africa. Some are cultivated, but Kew reports that a substantial share of traded cane is harvested from wild populations. That general trade context cannot establish whether any specific piece of furniture or cane product is wild-harvested or plantation-grown. Kew

Is rattan sustainable?
There is no sustainability verdict inherent in the word “rattan.” Harvesting is sustainable only in context, including which species is collected and whether harvesting is managed so that stems can be replaced. In an FAO chapter on rattan taxonomy, biology and ecology, John Dransfield identifies the central management test: “Ensuring that stem removal through harvesting does not exceed stem replacement is the crux of rattan sustainability.” FAO chapter by John Dransfield
Verifying that context can be difficult. Kew notes that bare cane is hard to identify to species once leaves and flowers are removed, and that extinction risk is unknown for many rattan species. A generic “natural,” “eco-friendly” or “sustainable” label therefore does not establish where a product came from or how it was harvested. If sourcing matters to your decision, ask the seller for species or origin details and evidence of a cultivated or managed supply. Kew

What should you check when buying a rattan product?
- Whether the listing identifies the material as natural rattan rather than using “wicker” alone.
- How the item is constructed and which parts are cane.
- Where it is intended to be used, along with the maker’s care and maintenance instructions.
- Any specific sourcing or harvest information if sustainability is a deciding factor.
Rattan products differ in form, finish and construction, so follow the maker’s instructions for care and placement rather than assuming one rule applies to every item.
