Linen is fabric made from fibers taken from the stem of the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum. Its feel and performance depend not just on the fiber, but also on how it is spun, woven, blended and finished. A label is the best way to tell linen from a linen-look fabric.
What linen is—and where it comes from
The European Union’s textile-fiber regulation defines flax, also called linen, as “fibre obtained from the bast of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum).” Bast fibers come from a plant’s stem. Linen therefore comes from flax stems, not flax seeds; the same plant can be grown for either purpose, but flaxseed and linen are different products. Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011
The word “linens” is also commonly used for household textiles such as sheets and tablecloths. That use describes the products, not necessarily their fiber: household linens may be made from linen, cotton, or other materials.
How to identify linen in a product
Check the fiber-composition label
“Linen-look” describes an appearance, not a guaranteed fiber. Products made from other fibers can resemble linen in look or feel, so check the composition label to find out what the item contains. European Commission consumer guidance says fiber percentages are listed in decreasing order. Your Europe: Textile label

Understand blends and legal names
A textile may combine linen with another fiber. The EU regulation has a specific designation, “cotton linen union,” for fabric with pure cotton warp threads and pure flax weft threads when flax makes up at least 40% of the total weight of the unsized fabric; the designation must include a composition specification. This is a specific legal case, not a general naming rule for every linen blend. Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011
How linen feels and performs
Flax is commonly described as strong and stiff, relatively resistant to sunlight, quick-drying, able to absorb dye, and resistant to pilling. It is also described as thermoregulating. These are general fiber characteristics, not guarantees about every finished garment or textile. Yarn, weave, fabric weight, blend, finishing and garment construction all affect how an item feels and behaves. CFDA Fiber Guide: Flax (Linen) The Linen Lounge material guide

When comparing items, consider what they are made of, how the fabric is constructed and finished, what they are intended for, and what their care labels require. The available sources do not establish controlled, like-for-like measurements for softness, durability or cooling across different linen products, so those qualities should not be assumed from the fiber name alone.
What linen is used for
Linen appears in clothing as well as household textiles, including bedding and table fabrics. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) reported in its 2021 fiber guide that more than 70% of linen is used in clothing. The excerpt does not identify a separate measurement year, so this is a figure reported by the guide, not a verified current market share. The same guide reported that flax represented less than 1% of textile fibers consumed worldwide; its measurement year is likewise not stated in the excerpt. What to know about linen and sustainability
It is too broad to call every linen product sustainable without specifying the basis for the claim. The CFDA describes flax as potentially lower-impact than some alternatives, while noting that cultivation is the least water- and energy-intensive part of a linen garment’s lifecycle; extraction, processing, consumer use and care can have greater impacts. A claim about a particular product therefore needs to account for more than how the flax was grown.
The available sources do not provide a current, comparable lifecycle assessment for a specified linen product versus cotton, polyester or another textile. For a meaningful comparison, look for evidence that identifies the products, geography, lifecycle boundaries and assessment date, along with the particular sourcing or environmental claim being made.

How to care for linen
There is no single washing temperature, drying method or ironing setting established for every linen item. Construction and finishes vary, so follow the care label on the individual product. If you want to reduce creases, an iron or garment steamer may be useful, but neither is necessary for every linen item.
