Good laser-cutter tutorials teach more than how to make an object: they show how to prepare a file, choose a suitable material, set up a job, and assemble the result. Start with a simple cut or engraving, then move into material-specific work, multi-part builds, and machine-specific settings. The resources below are established tutorial hubs and project examples—not a verified list of 60 individual tutorials.

Start with a simple cut or engraving

Stanford’s starter projects for laser cutting offer a useful progression. Its quick examples include plywood city coasters, acrylic earrings and pendant jewelry, a rastered picture with a stand, and a luggage tag. Stanford lists nameplates and an architectural model as projects that introduce interfacing parts and assembly. The times on the page are estimates for those projects, not guarantees for every machine or maker.

These examples let you learn the difference between vector cutting, which follows paths in a design file, and raster engraving, which marks an image line by line. Dremel describes vector files as preferred for cutting and raster images as suitable for engraving tonal variation in its LC40 FAQ. The exact software workflow and supported file formats depend on your machine.

Choose a project by material

Plywood and other sheet goods

Coasters, luggage tags, nameplates, and architectural models are approachable ways to practice layout, cutting, engraving, and fit. If you need stock for a plywood project, look for laser-compatible plywood sheets, but confirm that the specific product is permitted for your machine. Dremel advises users to check that non-Dremel stock is laser-specific; generic plywood is not automatically suitable.

Acrylic, paper, and engraving materials

Acrylic earrings and pendants combine cut shapes with small design details. Paper projects can introduce delicate cutting and layout. For engraving practice, xTool’s learning collection includes topics such as engraved basswood, rock coasters, and phone holders. It is a vendor resource, so treat its examples as starting points rather than independent evaluations of machine performance.

Leather, glass, and metal marking

Project ideas become more machine-dependent as materials and processes change. xTool’s collection includes leather bags, glass bottles used with rotary attachments, and stainless-steel marking. OMTech’s Learning Hub says it covers tumbler engraving, acrylic awards, CerMark metal marking, leather debossing, slate coasters, and rotary wine bottles, with downloadable project files. These are vendor-described offerings; verify the specific machine, material, attachment, and file requirements before starting.

Move from flat parts to assembled and 3D forms

A nameplate or architectural model adds a new challenge: parts must fit together, not merely look right on screen. Stanford identifies these as examples for learning about interfacing parts and assembly. A phone holder or cat puzzle, both listed among xTool’s example topics, can likewise help you think about slots, tabs, and how cut components relate.

For more advanced workflow guidance, Harvard GSD’s laser-cutter tutorial hub links to software and file-preparation material for Rhino, AutoCAD, and Adobe Illustrator, as well as resources about materials, settings, acrylic cutting, methods, a training checklist, and 3D engraving. These resources can help connect a project idea to the drawing and preparation steps needed to make it on a particular machine.

Prepare files and learn the workflow

  • Choose the right representation: use vector paths for cut geometry and raster artwork when the goal is tonal engraving, following the capabilities of your machine and software.
  • Check the design file: confirm dimensions, part alignment, and the intended relationship between cut and engraved elements before sending a job.
  • Check usage rights: Dremel advises users to have legal rights to design files they use.
  • Use the machine’s documentation: Harvard GSD’s hub can help with software workflows, while your machine manual and local shop training govern actual operation.

Find and adjust settings safely

Do not treat a tutorial’s speed, power, or pass count as a universal recipe. Material, thickness, machine type, and local operating rules all matter. Dremel says its LC40 software includes recommended material settings, but natural material variation may call for adjustments or custom settings; its FAQ directs users to the owner’s manual for commonly used and prohibited materials. Where the machine guidance allows, test on scrap before committing a full piece.

Stanford’s guidance is direct: “Each laser cutter has its own unique operating procedures, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with the specific guidelines for the laser cutter you’ll be using.” Read the manual, follow facility training and shop rules, and verify that the material is approved for the machine. This is especially important when moving between diode, CO2, fibre, or UV systems; a project or setting suited to one type should not be assumed to work on another.
