A Beautiful Sight to See Through: The Hard and Unusual Craft of Stained Glass

Stained glass combines image-making with careful construction. Learn how makers plan, cut, color, and join glass—and why lead safety matters.

Stained glass is both image-making and construction: a maker designs a picture, cuts glass to fit it, adds color or painted detail, then joins and supports the pieces as a durable panel. The method varies. Traditional lead-came windows, copper-foil work such as Tiffany-style lamps, and thick faceted dalle de verre are different ways to build with glass, not interchangeable names for one process.

How is stained glass made?

A traditional leaded window starts with a full-size design, often called a cartoon. It maps the overall image and the outlines of each glass piece; it may also mark colors and painted lines. The cartoon is both an image plan and a construction guide: its divisions determine how the design can be cut and assembled.

  1. Develop and enlarge the design. The maker prepares the image and scales it to the panel’s final dimensions.
  2. Choose the glass. Different colors, textures, and types of glass serve the image and the panel’s needs.
  3. Score and break each piece. A steel-wheel glass cutter scores the surface; the glass is then broken along the score and shaped to fit its place in the design. The Centre International du Vitrail identifies the steel-wheel cutter as the main modern cutting tool in its description of the technique.
  4. Add painted detail where the design calls for it. Lines and shading can be painted onto glass and fired so the detail is fixed to the surface.
  5. Assemble and support the panel. In a traditional lead-came window, the cut pieces are fitted into lead channels, joined, sealed, and attached to support work.

Not every piece of stained glass is built this way. A lamp assembled with copper foil, for example, has a different workflow from a window made with H-shaped lead came.

How do makers cut stained glass?

Cutting is controlled breakage, not sawing a shape out of a solid sheet. The pattern guides the maker in scoring the glass, and the score directs the break. Pieces need to fit the planned assembly; their outlines also become part of the finished image.

The Centre International du Vitrail describes a steel-wheel cutter as the principal modern tool for this work. The cutter scores the glass; it does not by itself make a finished edge or guarantee a correct fit. The design, glass choice, score, and break all have to work together.

How did makers add color and painted detail?

Color may be part of the glass itself or added to its surface. These approaches can produce different effects and serve different purposes.

Canfield 60/40 solder for stained glass
  • Made in the USA 1Lb Spool using only Virgin Material
  • 60/40 is 60% Tin and 40% Lead
  • Melting Temperature of 360° - 376°F
  • Contains One Spool
  • Color mixed into the glass: Metallic oxides added to the batch before melting can color glass throughout, a method often called pot-metal glass.
  • Flashed glass: A thin layer of colored glass is fused over clear glass. This was useful for colors such as deep red, which could otherwise be so dark that little light passed through.
  • Fired paint: Painted lines and shading can be fired onto the glass, adding drawn detail to the colored pieces.
  • Silver stain: Applied to the reverse of the glass and fired, this produces tones ranging from pale yellow to deep orange. The Victoria and Albert Museum identifies silver stain as an important 14th-century innovation.

These methods help explain why “stained” glass is not necessarily glass colored only by painting. The V&A’s introduction to stained glass describes both colored glass and methods for adding fired detail.

What holds stained-glass pieces together?

In a traditional lead-came window, each piece sits inside an H-shaped strip of lead, called a came. The came retains the glass and creates visible lines that contribute to the design. Lead joints are soldered; glazing putty is worked into the gaps to weatherproof the panel; and iron support work carries the completed panel in the opening. The V&A and the Centre International du Vitrail describe this construction sequence.

Other construction systems use different joints. In copper-foil work, foil wraps the edges of individual glass pieces before they are soldered together. In faceted dalle de verre, thick glass pieces are set in a matrix. The Stained Glass Association of America discusses these forms in its overview of stained-glass history and types. Their construction differs in line, thickness, weight, shape possibilities, support needs, and material hazards; there is no single best method for every design.

How does Tiffany-style lamp work differ from a leaded window?

A Tiffany-style lamp shows how a related art-glass format changes the process. The Metropolitan Museum of Art documents pieces cut with brass templates and assembled over a rounded wooden form, then secured with soldered lead. Its collection record for a Tiffany Studios soldering iron also documents the wider working setup, including a bench, wooden model, cartoons, cutting tools, foil, and soldering equipment.

The curved form is central to this workflow: the maker builds the shade over a model rather than assembling a flat window panel. The term “stained glass” therefore covers work that shares colored glass and soldering but differs in patterning and construction.

Why was stained glass important in medieval Europe?

Stained-glass windows were especially popular in Europe from about 1150 to 1550, appearing in churches, civic buildings, and elite homes, according to the V&A. Makers used colored glass, lead assembly, and painted or fired detail to turn windows into images while admitting light. Silver stain expanded the available palette in the 14th century.

Is stained-glass work dangerous because of lead?

Lead exposure is a real consideration in traditional stained-glass work, especially when handling lead came or soldering. The CDC lists stained-glass work and soldering among activities that may involve lead exposure. It recommends practical controls including good hygiene, ventilation, suitable personal protective equipment, hand washing, and careful dust control.

  • Keep work areas well ventilated and use suitable protective equipment for the task.
  • Wash hands after working and before eating or drinking.
  • Use wet cleaning or a HEPA-filter vacuum rather than dry sweeping that can spread dust.
  • Keep lead dust from traveling out of the work area on clothing and shoes.

The CDC’s lead prevention guidance for workers and its page on lead in jobs, hobbies, and other activities provide practical starting points. They are not a complete studio safety plan; occupational work should follow applicable workplace requirements and qualified safety advice.

A 1980 study by Landrigan and colleagues measured blood lead levels in 12 professional stained-glass workers, five hobbyists, and four family members. It reported mean levels of 20.7 µg/dL for professionals, 11.6 µg/dL for hobbyists, and 11.3 µg/dL for family members. The small, decades-old sample is historical evidence, not a current estimate of lead levels among stained-glass makers. The study is indexed by CDC Stacks.

Where can a beginner learn the craft?

A supervised class can introduce patterning, glass cutting, and assembly with appropriate tools and guidance. The Stained Glass Museum in Ely describes workshops that include guided panel practice and materials, and provides learning resources. For work involving lead or solder, instruction should include safe handling and cleanup, not just the making steps.
