For comfortable seated viewing, start with the center of the screen at your eye level while you sit in your usual position. Measure your own seated eye height rather than relying on a universal floor-to-screen measurement; seating and posture vary. Then use your television’s actual dimensions and mounting instructions to place the screen and bracket accurately.
Set the screen center at seated eye level
Sit in the main viewing seat in your normal posture and measure from the floor to your eyes. That measurement is the target height for the center of the visible screen. If several people regularly use the room, choose a comfortable compromise based on the primary seats.
Philips says a TV is mounted at the correct height when your eyes are level with the screen center while seated (Philips manual, “Wall mounting”). Sony likewise recommends placing the horizontal and vertical center lines at viewers’ eye level, while noting that preference and seating affect the choice (Sony USA support). LG allows the middle of the screen to be at or slightly below eye level (Philips placement guide); treat a small adjustment below eye level as a personal preference, not a required height.
Work out the screen’s top and bottom edges
A 65-inch diagonal does not tell you the exact height of the television’s cabinet or screen. As a geometric estimate, a 16:9 display with a 65-inch diagonal is about 31.9 inches tall, or about 16 inches from its center to either edge. This is not a manufacturer specification for every 65-inch model.

- Find the exact TV model’s height, including the bezel, in its specifications or manual.
- Subtract half that height from your target center height to estimate the bottom edge.
- Add half that height to estimate the top edge.
Use the actual model dimensions for installation; the estimate is only a planning aid.
Translate the screen position to the wall bracket
The bracket’s position is not necessarily the same as the screen center. The mounting holes may sit above or below the display’s center, so locate their position and offset in the TV’s installation instructions before marking the wall. Sony’s guide for certain 55- and 65-inch XH80, XH90, XH92 and XH95 televisions shows the model-specific process: account for screen center and hole offset, check the installation space, then align and mark the wall-mount base with a level (Sony UK installation guide). Its dimensions and instructions should not be transferred to a different television.

Installation checklist before drilling
- Confirm the television’s dimensions, mounting-hole pattern, weight and installation requirements in its own manual.
- Check that the mount suits the television and the wall construction, and use fasteners appropriate to the wall and the mount instructions.
- Check required ventilation clearances and avoid blocking them.
- Use a level to align and mark the mount as instructed.
- Recheck the planned screen position from the viewing seat before drilling. Painter’s tape or a paper outline can help you visualize the placement, but does not replace measurements or product instructions.
If you are unsure whether the wall can safely support the installation or how to follow the product instructions, consider using a qualified installer.

Viewing distance can affect room planning, but it does not provide a formula for how high to mount the screen. Sony’s placement guidance gives a distance range of two to five times the diagonal and separately recommends seated eye level at the screen center (Sony Help Guide, “Tips on Placement”). Distance recommendations vary with guidance and intended viewing experience; use your seated eye measurement to set height.
