In May 2023, the owners of Lobo, a West Texas ghost town, were reported to be offering the property for a base price of $100,000. That was a historical asking figure—not a confirmed current price or proof that the property is still for sale. The reporting described a 10-acre site with a former motel, store, post office, gas station, restaurant, pool, homes and other structures.

Where is Lobo, Texas?

Lobo is in West Texas. A June 2023 report by CBS Texas placed it about 130 miles southeast of El Paso and 15 miles east of the Rio Grande. Those are the report’s location descriptions, not a property survey or guidance that the site is open to visitors.

What did the reported $100,000 offer include?

Marfa Public Radio reported on May 8, 2023, that the offering covered 10 acres and included a former motel, grocery store and post office, gas station, restaurant, pool, homes and other buildings. CBS Texas also described a motel, a restaurant/gas station/saloon, a grocery store/post office and several homes.

These reports inventory buildings; they do not establish their present condition or whether any were operating. The $100,000 figure was the owners’ reported base price in 2023, attributed to co-owner Alexander Bardorff. It is not a verified current asking price, sale price or valuation.

Why did the owners say they were selling?

Three German friends bought Lobo in 2001. According to CBS Texas, the town had been abandoned since 1991, after serving for much of the 20th century as a railway watering stop. The owners later lived and vacationed there, worked on the property, and held art and film events, Marfa Public Radio reported.

In a listing statement quoted by Marfa Public Radio, the owners said: “We are too old now to continue our efforts to maintain the buildings and the 10 acres of land and would like to sell Lobo to someone who appreciates the special character of ‘our’ little Ghost Town.” Bardorff said the highest bid would not necessarily win: “It doesn’t mean that we necessarily will sell to the highest bidder.” He added: “If there’s somebody that I think is a good fit, then why not accept a lower offer and have that person do something?”

At the time, the owners hoped to make a final sale decision by the end of June 2023. That stated plan does not establish what happened afterward.

Is Lobo still for sale, and can you visit?

The available 2023 reports do not confirm whether the property sold, who owns it now, whether it remains listed, or whether visitors are currently allowed. Do not treat the historic asking figure as an active offer or assume public access. Anyone considering a purchase or visit would need current confirmation from the owners or a listing representative.

What would a buyer need to verify?

The news reports do not settle the property’s current legal, physical or operating status. A prospective buyer would need current, property-specific information rather than relying on the 2023 descriptions. Relevant questions include:

  • Ownership and title: Who owns the property now, and what title interests or recorded obligations apply?
  • Parcel boundaries: Do current records and a survey establish exactly which land and structures are included?
  • Buildings: What is the condition of each structure, and what repairs or inspections would be needed?
  • Water and wastewater: What systems serve the property, and what are their current condition, capacity and legal status?
  • Access: What legal and physical access exists, and are there any restrictions?
  • Permitted uses: Which uses are allowed under applicable current rules?

CBS Texas reported that the Lobo Valley sits above a large aquifer that supplies the town and nearby pecan plantation, farmland and cattle ranches. That regional context does not establish water rights, quality, capacity or availability for a particular parcel or buyer.
