It is normally an operating status, not a fault. The indoor unit may pause temporarily, and vapor may appear at the outdoor unit while frost is cleared.
Why does dF appear?
In cold, humid weather, frost can form on the outdoor heat exchanger and reduce heating efficiency. When the air conditioner detects conditions that call for defrost, it runs an automatic cycle to remove that frost. Samsung India also identifies dF as automatic defrost when ice forms on the outdoor unit during Heat mode.
While defrost is underway, the indoor fan may stop so the system does not blow cold air into the room. Vapor at the outdoor heat exchanger can also occur during the cycle; by itself, it does not show that a part has failed.
How long should the defrost cycle take?
Samsung Latin America says the cycle lasts 5 to 12 minutes under the conditions described in its guidance, updated March 5, 2026. That range is not a universal timing guarantee for every Samsung model or operating condition.

What should you do when dF appears?
- Let the cycle run. If dF appears while the unit is heating, give automatic defrost time to finish; avoid treating the temporary pause as a fault on its own.
- Check whether normal operation resumes. After defrost, the unit should return to its heating operation.
- Look up the model-specific guidance if it does not resume. Note the displayed code and consult the air conditioner’s manual or contact Samsung support, particularly if another code appears or the behavior does not match the manual.
Samsung has not set a universal point at which a longer-than-expected dF display becomes a service fault. The dF indication alone is not enough to diagnose a refrigerant, sensor, or other component problem.
Is dF a fault code?
Samsung’s guidance treats dF as an information code for an active function, rather than evidence of a product defect by itself. Its regional guidance lists other codes, including E1 and E5–E7, as examples of codes that may be associated with service issues; their meanings can vary by model. Use the guide for your specific air conditioner rather than assuming another code has the same meaning as dF.

Why might the display look different?
Samsung notes that display design and code conventions can vary by model. If the display or behavior is unclear, the owner’s manual for the exact model is the most relevant reference.
