The monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana) needs a sheltered, open site, moist but well-drained soil and room to become a very large evergreen. Before planting, check that your local winters suit it and that its mature canopy, surface roots and falling cones will not conflict with paths, paving or buildings.
Identify the tree and plan for its mature size
Araucaria araucana is native to Chile and Argentina. Its stiff, sharply pointed, triangular dark-green leaves are arranged along the branches. Male and female cones are usually borne on separate trees, according to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) profile.
This is a long-term specimen tree, not a compact evergreen. RHS lists an ultimate height above 12 m and spread wider than 8 m, and estimates 20–50 years to reach ultimate height. North Carolina State University Extension gives typical cultivated dimensions of 60–70 ft tall by 30–35 ft wide. These are figures from separate regional plant profiles, not a promise of the dimensions a tree will reach in every garden.
Allow space for the eventual crown as well as the root system. North Carolina Extension warns that surface roots can interfere with mowing and may lift sidewalks or other hardscaping. Large cones can become litter or a nuisance where people walk, and the pointed foliage makes a tight path or frequently used contact area a poor location. Neither source gives a universal planting-distance figure, so judge the site against the likely mature spread and nearby features.

Check whether your climate and site are suitable
Interpret hardiness ratings locally
RHS rates the species H7 in its UK hardiness system. North Carolina Extension describes its cold hardiness in North America as extending to USDA zone 7. These ratings belong to different regional systems and should not be treated as direct equivalents. Check the winter conditions and exposure typical of your own location rather than relying on a rating from another country.
Choose an open, sheltered position
RHS recommends an open site with shelter from cold, drying winds. Its UK profile lists full sun or partial shade as suitable. Consider both winter exposure and the tree’s future canopy when choosing a position; a sheltered, spacious spot is more appropriate than a confined gap beside a busy path.

Prioritise drainage
Use moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. RHS lists chalk, loam and sand, and acid, neutral or alkaline pH, as suitable categories. Those broad categories do not guarantee success in every local soil: assess whether water drains adequately at the intended planting site.
Plant and care for a monkey puzzle tree
Make the site decision before planting, since the tree eventually becomes large and is difficult to accommodate if placed too close to paving or regularly used areas. After planting, maintain suitable soil moisture while avoiding poorly drained conditions; the cited profiles do not prescribe a watering schedule or a detailed planting technique.

Use restrained pruning. RHS places monkey puzzle in pruning group 1 and says only young specimens respond well to pruning back into older wood. Avoid routine shaping or heavy pruning; the species is not described as needing regular trimming.
Watch for potential pests and diseases
RHS describes the tree as generally pest-free but notes possible honey fungus. North Carolina Extension lists possible scales, leaf spot, Phytophthora, root rot and sooty molds. These are potential problems, not a claim that a healthy tree will commonly develop them. If you see a decline or abnormal foliage, use symptoms and local conditions to guide diagnosis rather than assuming a single cause.

Propagate from seed or suitable cuttings
Sow seed when ripe
RHS recommends sowing seed in a seedbed as soon as it is ripe. The cited profiles do not give a detailed germination schedule or a guaranteed success rate, so timing beyond that instruction and expected results will depend on circumstances.
Use vertical shoot-tip cuttings
RHS also describes taking cuttings from vertical shoot tips in midsummer and rooting them in a cold frame. Choose a vertical tip: cuttings from horizontal side branches will not form an upright tree.

Keep seed edibility in context
North Carolina Extension reports that Indigenous peoples of Chile and Argentina harvest the large, nut-like seeds for food and describes them as edible. That cultural context does not establish that an unknown or untreated seed is safe to eat; do not assume seed intended for propagation is food-safe.
