Concrete cracks when shrinkage, temperature change, settlement, corrosion, chemical action, construction problems, or applied loads create movement that the concrete cannot accommodate. Prevention is not a single additive or sealer: it combines mixture design, moisture and temperature control, curing, reinforcement, restraint reduction, and properly designed joints.

Good practice can control crack width and location, but drying-shrinkage cracking cannot be eliminated from most concrete structures. An existing crack must be evaluated in context before anyone chooses a filler or repair method.

Why concrete cracks

Concrete is strong in compression but comparatively weak in tension. Whenever a slab, wall, beam, or pavement wants to shorten, expand, settle, or move and something restrains that movement, tensile stress develops. A crack forms when that stress exceeds the concrete’s tensile capacity. The same visible line can therefore have very different causes and consequences.

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) lists plastic shrinkage and settlement, drying shrinkage, thermal stresses, chemical reactions, weathering, reinforcement corrosion, poor construction, construction overloads, design or detailing errors, and externally applied loads among the recognized causes. A crack may be a limited appearance issue, or it may indicate structural distress or a durability risk.

Fresh-concrete cracking: plastic shrinkage and early settlement

Plastic shrinkage

Plastic shrinkage occurs while concrete is still fresh. Water leaves the surface through evaporation faster than bleed water can replenish it. The surface then contracts while the underlying concrete remains more fluid. If the surface has begun to stiffen or is restrained by the concrete below, shallow cracks can open.

Risk increases when evaporation is high, especially in hot, dry, or windy weather. A long gap between placement, finishing, and curing gives the surface more time to lose water. A stretched-out crew or delayed curing operation can therefore turn otherwise manageable weather into a cracking problem.

Early settlement

Settlement is another possible early-age mechanism identified by ACI. Fresh concrete can settle as solid particles move downward and water rises. Reinforcement, changes in section depth, embedded items, or other restraints can interrupt that movement. Do not treat a particular crack pattern as proof of settlement without examining the placement, reinforcement, section geometry, and timing.

Controls during placement

FHWA guidance on plastic-shrinkage cracking recommends managing the entire placement-to-curing sequence rather than relying on one product. Depending on the project and weather, practical controls can include:

  • Postponing placement during severe conditions when the specification and schedule allow.
  • Scheduling work for cooler hours when that reduces evaporation.
  • Using windbreaks to reduce air movement across the surface.
  • Providing shade over the placement area where practical.
  • Misting the air or otherwise increasing local humidity without adding water to the concrete surface.
  • Keeping placement, finishing, and curing operations coordinated so the surface is not left exposed while crews wait.
  • Starting curing promptly and maintaining it for the period required by the mixture and project specification.

These are risk-reduction measures, not guarantees. Weather can change during a pour, and the responsible contractor or engineer must select controls suited to the mixture, section, exposure, and available equipment.

Drying shrinkage in hardened concrete

After concrete hardens, it normally contracts as moisture leaves its pores. A foundation, adjacent pour, reinforcement, support, or the shape of the member can restrain that contraction. The resulting tensile stress can exceed the concrete’s tensile-strain capacity and produce a crack. Different parts of a member may dry at different rates, creating additional internal stress.

ACI’s Control of Cracking in Concrete Structures (ACI 224R-01, reapproved 2008, Chapter 3) gives a typical final shrinkage strain of 600 × 10-6. The same guidance notes that concrete tensile-strain capacity can be 150 × 10-6 or less. These are technical illustrative values, not a prediction for a particular driveway, floor, wall, or structural frame. ACI also cautions that long-term shrinkage predictions can have a coefficient of variation of 20% or more.

Variation comes from mixture composition, aggregate source, relative humidity, member geometry, and the ratio of exposed surface area to volume. Two slabs cast to the same nominal thickness can therefore behave differently if their aggregates, curing, edges, restraints, or exposure differ.

Drying-shrinkage cracking cannot be eliminated in most structures. The realistic objective is to reduce unnecessary movement, provide a planned place for unavoidable movement to appear, and keep cracks narrow enough for the exposure and use.

Temperature, chemical, weather, corrosion, and load-related cracking

Thermal stresses

Concrete expands when heated and contracts when cooled. A large temperature difference between the interior and surface, or between a new pour and an older support, can create tensile stress. Daily weather cycles, seasonal movement, heat generated during cement hydration, and restraint at joints or supports all matter. Thermal cracking requires an assessment of the element’s size, temperature history, restraint, and mixture; appearance alone is not enough to identify it.

Chemical reactions and weathering

Chemical reactions within concrete or at its exposed surface can create expansion, loss of cohesion, or scaling that eventually produces cracks. Freeze-thaw exposure, repeated wetting and drying, and aggressive solutions can also damage concrete over time. Durable mixture selection, adequate curing, drainage, and detailing that limits harmful exposure are design and construction responsibilities, not after-the-fact cosmetic treatments.

Reinforcement corrosion

When reinforcing steel corrodes, the corrosion products occupy more volume than the original steel. Pressure can build inside the surrounding concrete, causing longitudinal cracking, delamination, and spalling. Water and harmful agents entering through cracks or poorly protected concrete can accelerate the process. Cracking associated with rust staining, loose cover concrete, or exposed reinforcement deserves qualified evaluation.

Construction, design, and loads

Improper water addition, inadequate consolidation, premature loading, poor finishing, insufficient curing, misplaced reinforcement, inadequate cover, and poorly detailed joints can all contribute to cracking. A member can also crack when an applied load exceeds its design assumptions or when a construction load is imposed before the concrete has gained sufficient strength. A structural engineer should review cracks in beams, columns, walls that resist lateral loads, retaining structures, suspended slabs, or any element showing deformation or continuing movement.

How curing reduces cracking risk

ACI defines curing as maintaining moisture and temperature conditions in a freshly placed cementitious mixture so hydration and related reactions can proceed and the intended properties can develop. Continued strength development needs sufficient moisture and a favorable temperature. Controlling both also reduces adverse volume changes that can cause cracking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Curing is not simply “keeping the surface wet” for an arbitrary number of days. The required procedure depends on the mixture, cementitious materials, member size, weather, finishing method, and project specification. Follow the contract documents, mixture supplier’s instructions, and the responsible contractor’s curing plan. A curing method that is suitable for one slab may be unsuitable for another, particularly where a curing compound, wet covering, insulation, or a combination is specified.

  • Prepare the curing materials and equipment before concrete is placed.
  • Protect the surface from premature drying while finishing is completed.
  • Begin the specified curing procedure as soon as the surface can receive it without damage.
  • Maintain the required moisture and temperature conditions for the specified duration.
  • Pay particular attention to edges, corners, penetrations, and areas exposed to wind or direct sun.

Use mixture design, reinforcement, and joints as a system

Mixture and construction specifications

Crack control starts before the truck arrives. The mixture, aggregate, water content, cementitious materials, placement method, finishing sequence, and curing requirements should be selected for the element and exposure. Unnecessary water increases the amount of paste that can shrink; however, changing proportions or adding water on site without approval can create other performance problems. The project specification and qualified concrete professional should govern these decisions.

Reduce restraint where practical

ACI’s crack-control guidance emphasizes minimizing restraint. Detailing can allow movement at appropriate locations, avoid abrupt changes that concentrate stress, and coordinate new work with existing foundations or adjacent construction. Restraint cannot always be removed, so reinforcement and joints are used to distribute and control the resulting cracks.

Reinforcement controls width, not all movement

Adequate, correctly placed reinforcement helps distribute tensile strain and keep individual cracks smaller. It does not make concrete immune to shrinkage, temperature movement, settlement, or overload. Reinforcement size, spacing, cover, location, and development must be designed for the element and its loads; moving bars during placement or substituting a generic mesh can defeat the intended control.

Contraction joints create planned planes of weakness

Contraction joints give shrinkage and temperature movement a deliberate location. Their spacing, depth, timing, layout, and construction must match the application and slab geometry. A universal spacing rule is unsafe because panel dimensions, thickness, reinforcement, aggregate, exposure, and restraint all affect performance.

Joints also interrupt continuity. ACI notes that they can permit fluids and harmful solutions to enter, so joint sealants, waterstops, drainage, load transfer, and edge detailing may be needed for the exposure. A joint that controls visible cracking but admits water can create a durability problem.

A practical prevention plan

  1. Define the element and exposure. Identify whether the work is a ground-supported slab, pavement, wall, foundation, beam, column, or suspended slab, and note traffic, water, chemicals, freeze-thaw, and temperature exposure.
  2. Review the design and specifications. Confirm the required mixture, reinforcement, cover, joints, tolerances, curing method, and loading restrictions. Do not replace engineered details with a generic internet rule.
  3. Plan for the weather. Check heat, humidity, wind, sun, and the likely evaporation rate. Decide in advance whether to shift the pour, use shade or wind protection, mist the air, or add crew and equipment to keep finishing and curing on schedule.
  4. Control the fresh mixture. Prevent unauthorized water additions and coordinate delivery, placement, consolidation, finishing, and joint installation so the surface is not left waiting.
  5. Install reinforcement and joints accurately. Support reinforcement at its designed position. Form or saw contraction joints at the specified time and depth, and protect joint edges and seal details.
  6. Cure immediately and continuously. Apply the specified curing system as soon as feasible and maintain the required moisture and temperature conditions.
  7. Limit early loading and monitor movement. Keep construction traffic, stored materials, vibration, and service loads within the limits set by the project team. Record when cracks appear and whether they widen, close, or remain stable.

How to evaluate an existing crack before repairing it

Crack appearance alone cannot establish whether a crack is cosmetic, structural, or a durability concern. Before selecting a repair, establish four things:

  • Cause: Is the likely mechanism shrinkage, settlement, temperature movement, corrosion, chemical action, overload, or something else?
  • Activity: Is the crack stable, opening, closing, or changing with temperature, moisture, or load?
  • Exposure: Does it face driving rain, groundwater, deicing salts, chemicals, freeze-thaw cycles, or interior dry conditions?
  • Objective: Must the repair restore load transfer, stop water or harmful-agent entry, protect reinforcement, or improve appearance only?

Document the crack’s location, length, width, depth if known, nearby rust staining or spalling, moisture, displacement, and any associated deflection. Monitor a suspected active crack rather than sealing it blindly. A qualified engineer or concrete specialist should assess cracks in primary structural members, cracks accompanied by movement or settlement, and any damage associated with corrosion or persistent water.

Repair methods and when they may fit

ACI Committee 224’s Causes, Evaluation, and Repair of Cracks in Concrete Structures (ACI PRC-224.1-07, 2007) describes evaluation procedures and repair categories including epoxy injection, routing and sealing, near-surface reinforcement, grouting, and overlays.

  • Epoxy injection may be considered when a clean, appropriately prepared crack needs bonding or sealing and the crack is suitable for the material and service conditions.
  • Routing and sealing can create a surface reservoir for a sealant where the objective is to keep out water or harmful agents and structural re-bonding is not required.
  • Near-surface reinforcement can address selected cracks where additional tensile control is part of the engineered repair.
  • Grouting or overlays may suit particular voids, leakage conditions, or surface rehabilitation schemes.

None of these is a universal answer. Epoxy, caulk, mortar, or a surface filler can fail when the crack is moving, contaminated, wet, too deep, or caused by an unresolved load or corrosion problem. Repair selection should follow evaluation of the cause and the intended structural, durability, or cosmetic result. For detailed procedures, consult the ACI concrete crack repair guide, especially ACI PRC-224.1-07.

When to seek professional help

Arrange a qualified inspection promptly when a crack is widening or repeatedly reopening, crosses a beam, column, load-bearing wall, retaining wall, or suspended slab, is accompanied by sagging or displacement, exposes corroded reinforcement, causes concrete to spall, admits significant water, or appears alongside settlement. A small, isolated surface crack in a nonstructural element may be cosmetic, but that conclusion should be based on the element and circumstances rather than width or appearance alone.
