On a dual-zone air fryer, Sync coordinates two cooking programs so they finish together, while Match copies one zone’s settings to the other. The exact button sequence and behavior vary by model, so check your appliance’s manual.
What Sync does
Use Sync when the two zones have different foods, cooking times, temperatures, or functions, but you want both to finish at about the same time. Set each zone for its own food, then activate Sync. On the cited Ninja models, the appliance coordinates the programs; the shorter program may show HOLD while the longer one continues.
For example, you could set one zone for a longer-cooking main and the other for a quicker side, then use Sync to coordinate their finish. This describes the manufacturers’ stated feature purpose, not a guarantee that every food will be ideally cooked at the same moment.
What Match does
Use Match when you want both zones to run the same settings. It copies the first zone’s program to the second, making it useful for a larger amount of one food or for different foods that need the same function, temperature, and time. The foods do not have to be identical; the settings do.

Sync and Match compared
| Control | What it does | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Sync | Coordinates the finish of two programs, which may have different settings. | You are cooking foods with different times, temperatures, or functions and want them ready together. |
| Match | Copies one zone’s settings to the other. | You want both zones to cook with the same program, such as for a larger batch. |
What happens if you open a drawer?
Pause behavior depends on the model. Ninja’s support FAQ for the DZ800UK says its timer pauses when a drawer is opened. A manual mirrored by Costco says that, in Sync or Match mode, opening one drawer pauses the other drawer as well. Do not assume that the second behavior applies to other brands or models; check your manual for what happens to each zone’s timer.
These controls are model-specific
Sync and Match are not standard controls on every air fryer. Names can also vary: Ninja product copy uses Smart Finish and Match Cook, while its support and manual materials use SYNC and MATCH. Oster also describes Sync and Match on a dual-zone product. The labels alone do not establish identical behavior across brands, so follow the instructions for your exact appliance and region.

When comparing dual-zone models, check whether each zone accepts separate time, temperature, and cooking-function settings; what the manufacturer calls its finish-together feature; which settings Match copies; what happens when a drawer is removed; and how the baskets are arranged. Manufacturer examples include the US Ninja DZ901 product page, the Ninja AF300 manual page for the Philippines, and Oster’s dual-zone product page. Confirm the manual for the specific model and market rather than treating these examples as universal instructions.
