Western Dakota Technical College students are expected to build a home on the college’s Rapid City campus during the 2026–27 school year as part of a new partnership with the Black Hills Home Builders Association. Why the association says the project matters
Erin Wood, identified by KOTA as president of the Black Hills Home Builders Association, said developing the next generation of skilled-trades professionals is one of the industry’s biggest challenges. “There is nothing that compares to giving students the opportunity to actually build something,” she said.
The report describes employers’ concern about a skilled-worker shortage but provides no quantified estimate. The partnership’s workforce rationale should therefore be understood as the association’s stated motivation, not as a published measurement of the size of a regional labor gap.
