We Tested Smart Home Gyms—and Really Liked Them. Here’s Which One Is Worth It

Smart home gyms are genuinely useful—but they are not automatically better than a rack, bench, and weights. The best systems combine digitally controlled resistance, guided workouts, automatic tracking, and compact designs. That can make strength training easier to start and easier to repeat. The trade-off is substantial: high hardware prices, possible subscriptions, installation requirements, proprietary accessories, and dependence on software.

Based on editor testing reported by Men’s Health, Tonal 2 stands out for integrated coaching, while Speediance Gym Monster 2 is the more flexible freestanding alternative. Vitruvian Trainer+ is worth considering if a low-profile platform matters most. None should be treated as a universal replacement for a commercial gym or a properly equipped barbell setup.

Quick verdict

Best for Our pick Why
Integrated coaching Tonal 2 Polished guided programming, automatic adjustments, tracking, and solo-training features.
No wall mounting Speediance Gym Monster 2 Freestanding all-in-one design with several accessory packages.
Low-profile storage Vitruvian Trainer+ Platform-based format that takes less vertical space; verify current terms before buying.
Maximum flexibility and lowest software dependence Traditional rack and weights No subscription or account required, with broader compatibility for conventional training.

Bottom line: Buy a smart gym if convenience, coaching, and adherence matter more to you than unlimited exercise variety and low long-term cost. If you already train seriously with barbells—or are unsure you will exercise consistently—start with conventional equipment or a gym membership.

What we tested—and what that claim means

The underlying hands-on roundup was published by Men’s Health and syndicated by Yahoo. It reports editor testing of popular smart home gym equipment. The available source material does not establish that every model was tested for the same length of time, in the same room, or by the same tester, nor does it establish long-term durability testing.

#1 Best Overall
FJÖR XT Trainer - Compact Home Gym, All in One Fitness Station, Workout Resistance System, Strength Training Equipment, & Cable Weight Machine
  • DIGITAL RESISTANCE PRECISION - The Fjör XT Trainer utilizes advanced concentric resistance training by focusing on the lifting phase of movements without the strain of lowering weight.
  • SPACE-EFFICIENT DESIGN - This compact home gym combines versatility with a sleek, streamlined layout, making it ideal for limited space while offering a full range of strength exercises.
  • VAST EXERCISE VARIETY - With over 85 targeted workouts, this resistance machine home gym supports muscle development, weight training, and total-body toning with minimal setup required.
  • REAL-TIME FEEDBACK & APP INTEGRATION - Stay motivated with real-time exercise guidance, progress tracking, and app-guided workouts designed to optimize your training efficiency.
  • ALL-IN-ONE FITNESS STATION - Combining the functions of a cable weight machine and resistance system, this resistance home gym provides a comprehensive, adaptable training solution for any fitness level.

That matters. A connected gym can feel excellent during an initial review because it removes friction and makes workouts entertaining. Long-term value depends on whether you still use it after the novelty fades, whether you accept the subscription, and whether the equipment supports your changing goals.

Testing and ownership questions should include:

  • Which exact model and accessory package was evaluated?
  • Was the subscription active during testing?
  • Were strength workouts, classes, free workouts, and different user profiles tried?
  • How much clearance was needed around the machine?
  • What remains usable after cancellation?
  • Was the product tested long enough to assess durability, servicing, and software reliability?

What makes a home gym “smart”?

A smart home gym usually combines several technologies rather than offering just one feature:

  • Digital resistance: motors control the load instead of relying only on plates, dumbbells, or elastic bands.
  • Guided training: a screen or app supplies classes, programs, exercise demonstrations, or workout structure.
  • Automatic adjustment: the system can recommend or change resistance as you train.
  • Tracking: repetitions, speed, power, volume, range of motion, or personal records may be recorded automatically.
  • Safety assistance: some systems offer spotter modes or controlled eccentric resistance.
  • Profiles and progression: multiple household users can maintain separate records and programming.

That is different from a connected treadmill or bike, a workout mirror, or free weights that merely send data to an app. Digital-strength systems such as Tonal, Speediance, and Vitruvian control resistance itself. Camera-guided products mainly provide instruction or form feedback. Smart cardio equipment belongs to a separate category.

Tonal 2: best for coaching and integration

Tonal 2 is the most integrated option of the leading systems considered here. It mounts to the wall, uses digital resistance, and places its training interface directly in front of you. Tonal lists up to 250 pounds of digital resistance, or 125 pounds per arm, along with 315-plus movements and 16 workout types. It also includes a Smart View camera for movement analysis and coaching cues.

Why it impressed testers

  • Workouts are structured for you, reducing the need to plan sessions.
  • Resistance can be adjusted in small increments, which helps progressive overload.
  • Automatic records make it easier to repeat a workout and see changes over time.
  • Spotter and resistance-control features can make solo training feel less intimidating.
  • The wall-mounted format leaves the floor relatively uncluttered.

What to consider before buying

The listed hardware price is $4,295. Tonal lists its Essential Accessories Bundle as a $495 value and describes it as required to unlock the full movement set. Membership costs $59.95 per month plus applicable taxes, with a 12-month initial commitment. At that rate, the first year of membership adds $719.40 before tax.

Tonal says basic equipment functions remain available without membership, but personalized tracking, classes, programs, automatic weight recommendations, safety features, and other advanced functions require an active membership. In other words, the machine remains usable after cancellation, but much of the software value is removed. See the company’s membership comparison before ordering.

Installation is another decisive factor. Tonal lists requirements including 7 feet of unobstructed wall space, a 7-by-7-foot floor area, 7 feet 10 inches of ceiling height, reliable Wi-Fi, and a three-prong outlet within 6 feet. Professional installation is included with the purchase process, but the room must still be suitable for mounting.

Best for: beginners and busy users who want coaching, automated progression, and a polished household system.

Speediance Gym Monster 2: best freestanding alternative

Speediance Gym Monster 2 is a freestanding all-in-one system, so it avoids Tonal-style wall mounting. Its package levels add different combinations of benches, handles, bars, ropes, straps, mats, and rowing equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prices seen on August 18, 2026 ranged from $3,464 for Basic to $4,139 for Family Plus, with the collection showing Works and Works Plus between those configurations. These are time-sensitive sale prices, not permanent pricing. Compare the contents of each package rather than assuming the most expensive bundle is automatically the best value.

The Family Plus page lists free shipping, a 30-day return period from delivery, and a two-year warranty. Confirm those terms for your exact model and location before purchase.

Why it impressed testers

  • It offers a broad accessory ecosystem without requiring permanent wall installation.
  • The all-in-one design can support strength, hypertrophy, conditioning, and rowing-focused sessions.
  • Digital resistance avoids repeatedly loading and unloading plates.
  • Its freestanding format is more practical for some renters and multipurpose rooms.

Important limitations

Freestanding does not mean space-free. Measure bench clearance, cable travel, operating room, and accessory storage—not just the machine’s footprint.

Software and AI terms have changed across coverage and configurations. Do not assume that every advanced feature is permanently free. Earlier testing reported changing subscription arrangements, while newer comparisons described free membership for some setups. Confirm the current terms for the exact model and region at purchase. Tom’s Guide also cautioned that some advertised AI behavior is closer to smart automation than genuinely individualized coaching.

Best for: buyers who want an all-in-one system but cannot or do not want to mount equipment to a wall.

Skip it if: floor space is extremely limited, you want the most established coaching ecosystem, or you are unwilling to check changing software terms.

Speediance Smart Home Gym, Multi-Functional Gym Machine for Full Body Strength Training, All-in-one Gym Equipment, Digital Weight System, Workout Station, Squat Rack, Gym Monster 2
  • Full-Body Strength Training: The Speediance Gym Monster 2 combines a power cage, Smith machine, squat rack, bench rack, cable machine, and pulley system into one compact home gym for versatile strength training and full-body workouts.
  • AI Smart Coaching System: Built-in AI training technology tracks workout performance in real time and recommends weight adjustments after each set to support guided strength training for different fitness levels.
  • Digital Resistance up to 220 lbs: Dual 800W PMSM motors provide up to 220 lbs of smooth digital resistance with controlled adjustments for progressive overload and controlled strength training routines.
  • Compact Folding Design: Ultra-slim home gym folds down to just 0.25 m² / 2.69 ft² for space-saving storage; durable heavy-duty construction is suitable for apartments, home gyms, and shared living spaces.
  • Beginner-Friendly Home Workouts: Multifunctional bench and pulley system support exercises for chest, back, legs, and core; controlled resistance system helps provide stable workouts for individual or family use.

Vitruvian Trainer+: compact platform format

Vitruvian Trainer+ takes a different approach: a low-profile platform with digital resistance rather than a wall-mounted screen-and-cable unit. That can appeal to users who prioritize minimal vertical space and easier storage.

Its current U.S. price, maximum usable resistance, subscription terms, accessory contents, warranty, return policy, and availability should be verified directly before ordering. The headline resistance figure also needs careful interpretation: determine whether it means total resistance, resistance per cable, or a peak rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check cable travel carefully if you are tall or perform movements requiring a long range of motion. A compact footprint is helpful, but it does not guarantee that every exercise will feel natural.

Best for: users who want a low-profile digital-resistance platform.

Skip it if: you need a large built-in display, extensive integrated coaching, or confirmed local availability and support without first verifying the current terms.

What testers liked about smart gyms

Convenience

The largest benefit is not futuristic technology; it is reduced friction. The equipment is already at home, plates do not need changing, and guided sessions remove much of the work of designing a program.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Progressive overload without guesswork

Digital resistance can increase in small increments, while software can recommend the next load based on previous performance. That helps users progress without manually recording every set. It does not guarantee better muscle or strength gains, but it can make consistent progression easier.

Motivation and adherence

Classes, milestones, personal records, and visible training history may encourage people to exercise more regularly. This is a behavioral advantage—not evidence that connected equipment produces superior physiological results.

Confidence when training alone

Controlled resistance and spotter modes can make solo sessions feel more manageable. They do not eliminate injury risk. Correct setup, sensible loading, and competent technique remain necessary.

What testers disliked—and what owners should expect

  • Cost: hardware, accessories, installation, membership, taxes, financing, and service can make the real price far higher than the headline figure.
  • Subscriptions: a machine can remain physically functional while losing classes, tracking, recommendations, or safety features after cancellation.
  • Installation: wall-mounted products may not suit renters, unusual wall construction, low ceilings, or rooms with insufficient clearance.
  • Resistance feel: some exercises feel less natural with motor-controlled cables than with a barbell or dumbbell.
  • Exercise limitations: cable angles, attachment positions, or cable travel may make some movements awkward.
  • Proprietary accessories: replacement or additional attachments may be expensive or unavailable outside the manufacturer’s ecosystem.
  • Connectivity: screens, motors, sensors, firmware, Wi-Fi, apps, and user accounts create more possible failure points than a barbell and plates.
  • Resale: large connected equipment can be harder to move and resell than conventional weights.
  • Long-term software risk: feature libraries and service policies can change, and a company’s future support is difficult to guarantee from a short review.

Smart home gym versus conventional equipment

Option Strengths Weaknesses
Smart home gym Guidance, tracking, adjustable digital resistance, convenience, compact designs. High cost, software dependence, subscriptions, proprietary hardware.
Adjustable dumbbells and bench Lower cost, simple ownership, useful for many general workouts. Less automated coaching and tracking; limited maximum load for some users.
Rack, barbell, plates, and bench Maximum flexibility, conventional resistance feel, no software fees. Requires more space, knowledge, setup, and safe lifting practices.
Commercial gym Heavy weights, specialty machines, classes, social accountability, and variety. Travel time, crowds, recurring membership fees, and less privacy.
Low-cost app plus basic equipment Affordable guidance with conventional ownership. Less automation and no integrated resistance control.

A smart gym may replace a general-purpose commercial gym for a recreational lifter who values convenience. It is less likely to replace a complete facility for a powerlifter, Olympic lifter, strongman athlete, or anyone who needs specialty equipment, heavy barbell work, or in-person coaching.

Calculate the real cost before you buy

Use this formula rather than comparing sticker prices:

Total ownership cost = hardware + required accessories + delivery and installation + membership + tax + financing cost + warranty or service costs − resale value.

For Tonal 2, the published $4,295 hardware price plus 12 months of membership equals at least $5,014.40 before tax, accessories not included in that price, financing, extended warranty, or other order-specific charges. That is a first-year illustration, not a universal checkout total.

For a two- or five-year comparison, add every month of required or desired membership and compare the result with a rack, bench, plates, adjustable dumbbells, or local gym fees over the same period. A conventional setup may cost more initially than a few adjustable dumbbells but usually has no recurring software bill. A smart system may be more expensive financially while still being better value for someone who trains more often because it is always available and provides structure.

Who should buy one?

  • Busy professionals: the saved travel and planning time may justify the cost.
  • Beginners: guided sessions and automatic tracking can reduce uncertainty.
  • Households: multiple profiles can make one system more useful to several people.
  • People who dislike commercial gyms: home privacy and immediate access can improve adherence.
  • General strength and hypertrophy trainees: digital resistance is well suited to controlled, repeatable training.

Who should skip one?

  • Serious barbell lifters: digital resistance may not provide the feel, loading pattern, or maximum resistance you need.
  • Olympic, strongman, or sport-specific athletes: specialized equipment remains necessary.
  • Renters with installation restrictions: especially those considering wall-mounted equipment.
  • Budget buyers: conventional equipment or a gym membership generally offers a lower-cost path.
  • Inconsistent exercisers: do not use a large purchase to solve an unproven habit. Try a gym, low-cost app, or basic equipment first.

Questions to ask before ordering

  1. What exactly remains usable if I cancel the membership?
  2. Is the resistance rating total, per arm, per cable, peak, or practically usable?
  3. What accessories are required for the exercises I actually want to perform?
  4. Can the equipment fit with full cable travel, bench movement, and safe clearance?
  5. Does it work during an internet outage, and what account or phone access is required?
  6. How are firmware problems, motor faults, and replacement parts handled?
  7. Can workout history be exported?
  8. What are the current return, warranty, delivery, installation, and rental terms?
  9. What will the machine cost after two and five years?

Smart home gyms are at their best when they make a good training habit easier to maintain. They are not magic, and “AI coaching” can mean anything from automatic resistance adjustment to camera-based form cues; neither is automatically equivalent to individualized human coaching. Match the machine to your space, training style, budget, and willingness to pay for software—and be prepared to choose no smart gym at all.
