Short answer: A pest professional recommends spraying a blend of peppermint, rosemary, and citronella oils along mouse travel routes and near suspected entry points. It may provide a temporary odor-based deterrent, but it is not a dependable stand-alone way to remove mice or keep them out.
The more durable solution is building exclusion: seal openings as small as ¼ inch (6 millimeters), remove accessible food and nesting materials, and use properly placed snap traps if mice are already active indoors. The published expert advice does not include a verified spray ratio, so there is no responsible basis for inventing one.

If mice are scratching in a wall, leaving droppings beneath a sink, or appearing in a garage, an essential-oil spray can be a reasonable low-effort supplement. But scent is not a substitute for repairing the building envelope. Mice can avoid one treated route and use another, especially when a home provides warmth, food, water, and shelter.

The natural method the pest professional recommends
Jacob Cohn, A.C.E., of Arrow Termite & Pest Control, recommends combining three oils in a spray:
#1 Best Overall
- 100% HUMANE & STRESS-FREE: Eliminate your rodent problem without the guilt. Our smart-trap design captures mice alive and unharmed, featuring extra ventilation holes to ensure the "little guy" stays comfortable until you release him back into the wild.
- SAFE FOR CHILDREN & PETS: Finally, a pest control solution you can trust around your family. With no toxic poisons, messy glues, or dangerous snapping springs, this trap is the ideal choice for households with curious toddlers, dogs, and cats.
- UPGRADED "NO-TOUCH" DESIGN: Your safety is our priority. The simple catch-and-release mechanism allows you to free the mouse outdoors without ever having to touch or see the rodent closely. Simply slide the back door to let them out—hygienic and hassle-free.
- REUSABLE & EASY TO CLEAN: Made from high-quality, durable ABS plastic, these traps are built to last. After a successful catch, just rinse with warm soapy water and they are ready to be set again. It’s an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to single-use traps.
- SENSITIVE TRIGGER FOR ALL SIZES: Featuring a high-precision weight-triggered lever, our traps are engineered to catch even the smallest field mice. The compact, blue-tinted design blends into your home decor while effectively securing your pantry, garage, or kitchen.
- Peppermint oil
- Rosemary oil
- Citronella oil
The advice is to apply the spray along walls, suspected entry points, and routes where mice travel. Cohn’s explanation is that mice commonly move beside walls, where their whiskers can remain in contact with the edge. That behavioral guidance—and the claim that the effect can last upwards of 60 days—comes from the pest professional quoted in the published interview. It is not an independently verified guarantee for every home.
Important formula gap: The published article names the three oils but gives no number of drops, percentage of each oil, carrier, emulsifier, concentration, indoor-surface guidance, or testing protocol. Do not present an internet recipe as Cohn’s formula. If you use a ready-to-use commercial product, follow that product’s label exactly.
Does peppermint oil really repel mice?
The most accurate answer is: sometimes in controlled conditions, but not reliably enough to treat as household mouse control.
Mice respond to odors, and volatile compounds in essential oils can affect rodent behavior. Laboratory studies have found deterrent effects from some essential oils and other plant compounds. One controlled house-mouse study, however, found that results varied with the particular oil, concentration, sex of the mice, and freshness of the oil. That is a very different standard from proving that a spray will keep mice out of an occupied home.
A systematic review of 54 studies found that plant-based rodent repellents showed potential, particularly essential oils and terpenoids, but that success was inconsistent when results moved from laboratory testing to enclosure and field conditions. Food availability, warmth, nesting pressure, airflow, surface type, weather, concentration, and habituation can all change the result.
There is also conflicting professional guidance. In an extension response specifically addressing peppermint oil, an extension specialist said peppermint should not be expected to deter mice from entering a home and recommended sanitation, trapping, and sealing entrances instead. That does not prove every essential-oil blend has no effect; it does show why a scent treatment should not be described as a reliable barrier.

Think of the spray as a possible short-term change to mouse movement—not as population reduction. A mouse that avoids one scented wall may move behind an appliance, into a ceiling, across a garage, or into another unit.

- Prefer a labeled product when possible. A commercial product should specify its ingredients, intended surfaces, application method, and any indoor or outdoor restrictions. A product marketed as natural or minimum-risk is not automatically harmless; pesticide products still have labeling and use conditions. See the EPA’s conditions for minimum-risk pesticides.
- Do not guess the ratio. The source interview does not disclose one. Without a verified concentration, carrier, or application test, a precise DIY recipe would be made up rather than reported.
- Target travel routes. Apply only where the label allows, such as along floor-wall junctions, behind appliances, near garage or basement doors, and around suspected exterior routes. Treating an entire room indiscriminately wastes product and may expose people or animals unnecessarily.
- Keep the spray out of openings and equipment. Do not spray into electrical outlets, HVAC openings, ducts, wall cavities, or plumbing penetrations. Do not use it on food, dishes, food-contact surfaces, pet bowls, bedding, children’s toys, or any surface the product label excludes.
- Reapply according to the label. If you are relying on the pest professional’s attributed claim of an effect lasting up to 60 days, remember that this is not a validated universal interval. Weather, cleaning, ventilation, and the surface can shorten it.
Never spray essential oils directly onto a pet or leave oil-soaked materials where an animal can chew, lick, or rub against them.
Natural does not mean automatically safe for pets
Concentrated essential oils can harm animals through ingestion, skin or coat contact, or excessive inhalation. The ASPCA advises particular caution around essential oils; cats are especially sensitive, and birds can be particularly vulnerable to diffused oils. Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and animals with respiratory disease also warrant extra caution.
Keep oil bottles and treated materials inaccessible, ventilate the area, prevent pets from contacting wet residue, and ask a veterinarian before using an essential-oil product in a room occupied by a sensitive animal. For information about peppermint-oil irritation and toxicity, see Poison Control’s peppermint-oil guidance. If a pet is exposed, contact a veterinarian or animal poison service.
The construction fix that lasts: seal mouse entry points
According to the CDC, mice can fit through an opening approximately ¼ inch in diameter—about the width of a pencil. For a homeowner, that means a gap that looks too small to matter may still be a functional entry point.

Materials that mice cannot easily chew through
For a small opening, pack coarse steel wool into the void and secure it with caulk. The CDC also lists lath screen, hardware cloth, metal sheeting, cement, and other metal or mineral materials for appropriate repairs.
A practical repair sequence is:
- Locate the opening and remove loose debris.
- Pack a small void with coarse steel wool or another suitable metal mesh.
- Secure the plug with caulk or a durable patching compound.
- Use hardware cloth, metal flashing, lath screen, or cement for larger openings or damaged construction.
- Inspect the repair later for fresh gnawing, loosened material, or a new route beside it.
Do not rely on expanding foam alone. UC Integrated Pest Management cautions that plastic screening, rubber, vinyl, wood, expanding foam, and other chewable materials are ineffective when used alone in holes mice are using. Steel wool can be useful as a temporary plug, but it may rust over time, so a durable metal, masonry, or properly protected repair is preferable where conditions allow.
If mice are already inside, combine exclusion with trapping and monitoring. Sealing an exterior gap prevents new entry, but it does not remove mice already nesting in a wall, attic, basement, or appliance void. Poorly planned repairs may also redirect activity to another part of the structure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf mice are already inside, use snap traps
A repellent may make a route less attractive; it will not reliably remove an established indoor population. UC IPM identifies snap traps as an effective first step in many indoor situations when they are placed near signs of activity.
- Look for droppings, gnaw marks, tracks, nests, oily rub marks, urine odor, chewed packaging, and nighttime scratching.
- Place traps close to walls and in protected locations near fresh evidence, rather than in the middle of an empty room.
- The Penn State Extension recommends positioning the snapping side toward the wall and using peanut butter as bait.
- Use enough traps to make the trapping period decisive. UC IPM says house mice generally remain within about 30 feet of their nest and food supply; in active areas, traps can be spaced no more than about 10 feet apart.
- Pairs of traps placed 1–2 inches apart may improve the chance of catching mice moving along an edge.
- Keep traps inaccessible to children and pets, and check them according to the product or trap instructions.
One trap placed randomly beside a refrigerator is rarely a complete plan. Fresh evidence should determine placement, and continued activity after trapping is a reason to look for another entry point or inaccessible nesting area.
Remove food, water, and nesting opportunities
Sanitation supports exclusion and trapping, although it rarely eliminates house mice by itself. UC IPM notes that mice can survive on very little food; clutter and easy access simply make it easier for them to thrive.

The CDC recommends these changes:
- Store food in thick plastic, metal, or glass containers with tight-fitting lids.
- Clean crumbs, spills, and food residue promptly.
- Put pet food and water away overnight.
- Keep garbage in tightly closed containers.
- Store grains, seed, and animal feed securely.
- Keep bird feeders away from the house.
- Remove outdoor garbage, unused materials, and clutter near the structure.
- Keep compost at least 100 feet from the home where practical.
- Keep woodpiles at least 100 feet from the home and raise them at least 1 foot off the ground.
- Trim brush and weeds around the building.
For construction and renovation projects, do not leave bags of seed, food waste, insulation scraps, cardboard, or loose nesting material in unfinished spaces. A clean, well-sealed utility room or crawl-space perimeter is easier to inspect and less attractive than a cluttered one.
Clean mouse droppings without creating contaminated dust
Do not sweep or vacuum dry droppings, urine, or nesting material. Disturbing dry waste can aerosolize contaminated particles. Follow the CDC’s cleanup procedure:
- Put on rubber or plastic gloves.
- Spray the droppings and urine until thoroughly wet with an EPA-registered disinfectant or a fresh bleach solution.
- The CDC’s stated bleach mixture is 1½ cups of household bleach in 1 gallon of water. Follow the disinfectant label if using a commercial product.
- Allow the material to soak for 5 minutes, or for the time specified by the disinfectant label.
- Wipe it up with paper towels and place the waste in a covered garbage can.
- Mop or sponge the area with disinfectant.
- Wash the gloved hands before removing the gloves, then wash bare hands with soap and warm water.
Do not mix bleach with other cleaning products. For a closed shed, cabin, or other outbuilding, open the doors and windows for 30 minutes, leave the area while it ventilates, and then return to clean. Heavy infestations, contaminated insulation, extensive nesting, dead rodents, or contamination in inaccessible areas may require professional remediation. The CDC provides additional information on preventing hantavirus exposure.
Methods that should not be your primary plan
| Method | Reason to be cautious |
|---|---|
| Ultrasonic, magnetic, or vibrational devices | UC IPM says there is little evidence that these devices drive established house mice from buildings or prevent infestations. |
| Dryer sheets and strong household odors | A strong smell may temporarily alter movement, but there is no good basis for treating these as reliable repellents. They do not seal entry points or remove mice. |
| Mothballs | Do not scatter mothballs in living spaces, attics, crawl spaces, or vehicles as an off-label mouse repellent. They are pesticides intended for labeled uses, and loose products can expose people and pets to pesticide vapors. |
| A cat or dog | Some pets catch mice, but predators rarely control a population. UC IPM notes that predators can also make mice more secretive. |
| Live traps | They may appeal to people who want to avoid killing, but relocation can be restricted or ineffective, and releasing a mouse does not repair the building. Rules vary by location. |
| Rodenticide | Poison can reduce a persistent population but creates risks to people, pets, and wildlife, and mice may die inside walls. EPA explains the risks and consumer bait-station requirements for rodenticide products in the United States. |
What to do in common building situations
Renters and apartment residents
Document droppings, holes, dates, and locations, then notify the landlord or property manager. Ask for inspection and building-wide exclusion rather than only having one room sprayed. In multifamily buildings, mice can move through shared plumbing, utility, basement, attic, and wall pathways.
Older homes and difficult foundations
Stone foundations, crawl spaces, deteriorated siding, roof penetrations, and irregular additions can contain many small gaps. Temporary steel-wool plugs may help while a repair is scheduled, but durable exclusion may require metal flashing, hardware cloth, mortar, cement, or professional building-envelope work.
Garages, sheds, cabins, and seasonal homes
An oil spray may be a temporary seasonal adjunct, but remove food and nesting materials and close structural gaps before leaving the building vacant. Ventilate closed outbuildings for 30 minutes before cleaning if rodent contamination is present.

Vehicles
Infrequently used vehicles can attract mice, especially around the engine compartment, air intake, filters, and cabin. Inspect for nesting and gnawing, and use gloves and CDC cleanup precautions. If wiring, ventilation components, or inaccessible areas are affected, involve a mechanic or pest professional rather than relying on scent.
Kitchens and food pantries
Do not spray essential oils onto food-contact surfaces, exposed food, dishes, or storage containers. Prioritize sealed food storage, immediate cleanup, exclusion around plumbing and cabinets, and traps placed where children and pets cannot reach them.
When to call a pest or remediation professional
Contact a licensed pest professional or qualified remediation contractor when:
- Mice are active in walls, ceilings, ducts, HVAC components, or other inaccessible cavities.
- Droppings continue after sealing, cleaning, and trapping.
- There are piles of droppings, multiple nests, dead rodents, or contaminated insulation.
- The infestation is heavy or extends through a multifamily building.
- You cannot safely reach or disinfect the contaminated area.
- There is extensive odor, damaged wiring, or structural access that requires specialized repair.
A professional should be able to identify entry routes, recommend durable exclusion materials, and create a trapping or population-reduction plan. The goal is not merely to make mice change direction; it is to stop access and remove the animals already using the building.
How the methods compare
| Method | Best use | Main advantage | Common limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential-oil spray | Short-term deterrence or seasonal supplement | Easy to apply and may alter travel routes | No verified universal formula; volatile effects vary, and mice may ignore the odor when food or shelter pressure is high |
| Exclusion | Long-term prevention | The most durable way to prevent new entry | Every opening must be found and repaired |
| Sanitation | Reducing attraction | Low cost and useful alongside other controls | Rarely eliminates mice alone |
| Snap traps | Active indoor mice | Provides a verifiable result without poisoned carcasses in walls | Requires correct placement, sufficient numbers, and safe checking |
| Rodenticides | Persistent or substantial infestations under a suitable plan | Can reduce a population | Risks to people, pets, and wildlife; carcasses may be inaccessible |
| Ultrasonic devices | Generally not recommended as primary control | Simple to plug in | Little evidence of meaningful control of established mice |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct ratio for peppermint, rosemary, and citronella mouse spray?
The published pest-professional recommendation does not provide a verified ratio, number of drops, carrier, or concentration. Do not present a guessed internet recipe as the expert’s formula. For a commercial product, use the label directions.
How small a hole can a mouse use to enter a house?
Mice can use an opening approximately ¼ inch (6 millimeters) in diameter—about the width of a pencil. Seal small openings with suitable metal material secured with caulk, and use hardware cloth, metal, or cement for larger gaps.
Can an essential-oil spray replace mouse traps?
No. A spray may temporarily change where mice travel, but it does not reliably remove mice already inside. Use snap traps near fresh evidence, seal entry points, and remove food and nesting opportunities.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIs peppermint or citronella spray safe around cats and other pets?
Do not assume so. Concentrated essential oils can harm pets through ingestion, skin contact, or inhalation; cats and birds are particularly concerning. Keep treated areas inaccessible, follow the product label, and ask a veterinarian about species-specific risks.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The peppermint, rosemary, and citronella blend is worth considering only as a temporary, plant-based adjunct—and the published advice does not include a verified DIY ratio. For results that last, seal every opening at least ¼ inch wide, remove food and shelter, trap active mice, and clean droppings with CDC precautions.
