Its plans specify PETG connectors and TPU contact parts, with the frame sized to an individual user. The project team reports prototype strength tests, but those results are not a weight rating or proof that a home-built walker is safe or appropriate for a particular person.
How the DIY walker is designed
The frame uses wood dowels in a static A-frame arrangement, with inward triangular bracing and two horizontal braces on each side. PETG connectors join the wood members. Each foot combines a TPU base, a PETG body, and a screw connection; a separate TPU grip forms the handle contact surface. Make: says the design was adapted after interviews with walker users and examination of commercial models. See the Make: project and its diagrams and linked files.
Materials and tools specified by the project
- Wood dowels in two diameters: 19.19 mm (0.755 inch) and 22.4 mm (0.88 inch).
- PETG filament for most printed parts.
- TPU 85A for the foot cushion, washer, and handle grip; NinjaFlex is named as an example.
- #6 × ½-inch flat-head screws.
- An FFF 3D printer, a wood saw, and a screwdriver. A drill/driver is optional but helpful.
These are the project’s specified materials, not a guarantee that substituting another filament, dowel, or fastener will preserve fit or performance.
Size the frame to its user
Set the handle height
Have the intended user stand upright in shoes with arms relaxed. Measure vertically from the floor to the crease of the wrist. The project uses that measurement to determine walker height.

Choose width and handle length
Make: gives 635–735 mm as a typical width range and says 560–610 mm may be appropriate for narrow entryways. It suggests a width slightly greater than shoulder width, or more for someone with a wider stride. For depth and handle length, the user’s hand should fit comfortably; the handle should be longer than the fist, with additional room according to preference.

- Print each connector and contact part using the specified material and print orientation.
- Measure and cut the dowels to the dimensions selected for the user.
- Assemble the feet, including their TPU base, PETG body, and screw connection.
- Fit the dowels into the connectors and assemble the braced frame, fastening the parts as instructed.
- Check that every connector fits securely, then secure the feet and inspect the completed assembly.
Follow the project’s detailed dimensions and assembly directions rather than inferring cut lengths or print settings from this summary. A poor connector fit, loose fastener, or incorrect cut can undermine the intended structure.
What the reported strength tests do—and do not—show
Make:’s 2024 article says the project team tested prototypes against the static-strength requirement it attributes to ISO 11199-1:2021: a vertical 1,500 N load (about 337 lb or 153 kg) held for 2–5 seconds. The team says it used a hydraulic press to test prototypes to failure and also investigated lateral loading. The article reports these failure loads:

These are the project team’s reported prototype results, not an independent test of a reader’s build. A failure load is not a rated user capacity, a guarantee, or evidence of clinical suitability. The project page does not establish that every build made from the plans will perform the same way, nor does it provide an independent clinical evaluation. Make:’s 2024 article gives two project cost estimates: $50–$70 in its header and $48–$68 in its conclusion. Treat these as source-stated estimates, not current local prices. The article also says the frame is about 0.5 kg (1 lb) lighter than commercial walkers, but it does not identify a controlled, model-by-model comparison. Those figures are not a verified current-price comparison or a general claim about all commercial walkers.
