On a typical automotive battery connection, red marks the positive (+) lead and black marks the negative (−) lead. The colors belong to the cables and clips, though, and the battery’s own posts are identified by their +/− or POS/NEG markings. Confirm polarity on the battery and follow your vehicle’s or charger’s instructions before attaching anything.
How the red and black colors are used
Ford’s owner’s manual says, in an archived edition: “The red cable is generally used for the positive terminals and the black for the negative ones.” That archived wording is reliable for the color convention, but not for current model-specific procedure. Hyundai’s 2026 owner’s manual uses the same pairing in its jump-start instructions, and a Texas Department of Insurance fact sheet on vehicle battery safety (HS20-006A, revised 7-20) describes the same arrangement for jump-starting.
In practice, the color tells you which clip on a jumper lead or charger clip goes to which end of the battery connection. It does not tell you what the battery post looks like. Do not assume the posts themselves are red and black.
Confirm polarity from the battery markings
The Texas fact sheet states that the two battery posts are marked: “One is marked positive (+), the other negative (-).” Victron’s charger instructions list POS, P or + for positive and NEG, N or − for negative. Look for these symbols on or beside each post before you connect a lead.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.
- Versatile Digital Multimeter - Accurately measures AC/DC Voltage, DC Current, Resistance, and Diode. This Multimeter is a really useful tool for solving industrial and household electrical issues. Suitable for Household Outlets, Fuses, Batteries (including Vehicles), Automotive Circuit Troubleshooting, Charging Systems, Testing electronics in Cars etc.
- Troubleshooting with Accuracy - This Multimeter has a sampling speed of 2 times per second; Built-in a backlight LCD display with 3 ½ digits (1999 count) 0.6”, and high polarity including negative and positive readings.
- Ensures Safety - Double fuse is anti-burn and protects from overloading. The silicone cover can protect the multimeter from failing damage and prevent electric shocks. And low battery indication will be displayed when battery power is low.
- Ease of Use - Support Data Hold and Continuity Buzzer. Includes Convenient feature like LCD Backlit Screen makes it easy to use in dimly light areas. Batteries/Set of Test Leads/User Manual are Included.
| Identification method | What it establishes | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Red lead or clip | The conventional positive lead on jumper cables and charger clips | Describes the lead, not the post. Check the clip’s end against the post marking. |
| +/− or POS/NEG marking on the post | Which post is positive and which is negative | Only useful when the marking is present and readable. |
| Vehicle owner’s manual | Designated jump-start points and the connection sequence for that vehicle | Vehicle-specific. The current manual for your model governs. |
| Charger instructions | Polarity labels and clip connections for that charger | Connection points differ for positive-grounded vehicles, as described below. |
Use designated jump-start points where the vehicle has them
VARTA states that some modern vehicles have under-hood jump-start connections that should be used instead of connecting directly to the battery. Hyundai’s 2026 instructions give their own sequence and tell you to correctly identify the positive and negative terminals “to avoid reverse polarity connections,” and they warn against connecting to the discharged battery’s negative jump terminal. If your vehicle has a remote jump-start post, the battery post is not necessarily the right clamping point.
Charger connections can differ on positive-grounded vehicles
Victron’s instructions separate negative-grounded vehicles from positive-grounded ones. In the positive-grounded case it describes, the charger’s clip-to-chassis connection is different from the usual pattern. A color-based reading of the leads will not show that difference, so use the charger instructions for the specific vehicle.

- CONVENIENT FEATURES: Test lead holders on the back of the meter, kickstand and optional magnetic hanger (Cat. Nos. 69445 or 69417) for hands-free operation
When to stop and get help
- The posts show no +/− or POS/NEG markings, and the owner’s manual does not resolve which is which.
- Your red and black leads do not clearly match the markings on the battery you are working on.
- The manual specifies a jump-start point that you cannot locate.
Incorrect connections can cause sparks, injury or vehicle damage. Hyundai warns of explosion and personal injury risks in its jump-start procedure, and the Texas fact sheet warns against connecting red to the negative post. If any of the conditions above apply, consult the vehicle manual or a qualified technician before attaching leads. VARTA also recommends workshop attention after a deep discharge.
