A Walipini is a greenhouse built partly or wholly below ground. It combines an excavated growing area, access to winter sunlight and surrounding earth as part of its environmental strategy. Its design depends on the site: a construction bulletin prepared for La Paz, Bolivia, is a useful example, not a plan to copy unchanged elsewhere.
How a Walipini greenhouse works
A Walipini places the growing space below grade, where earth surrounds much of the structure. The design also admits sunlight through a sloped roof. In combination, the earth and solar gains are intended to help shape the growing environment; the sources available do not establish a guaranteed temperature, yield or year-round growing result.
The Benson Agriculture and Food Institute’s construction bulletin, revised in 2002, describes a rectangular pit, a roof glazed with plastic sheeting in two layers separated by an airspace, and a higher rear earth wall paired with a lower front wall to create roof slope. Those are features of its design for La Paz, Bolivia—not universal dimensions or engineering specifications.
What the La Paz example does—and does not—specify
The bulletin states: “The Walipini (underground or pit greenhouse) in this bulletin is designed specifically for the area of La Paz, Bolivia.” Its examples should be read in that context.

The bulletin’s listed dimensions and materials are examples, not a complete, site-ready plan. A separate 2023 article record concerns an agronomic design for high-Andean páramos. It does not establish that either design transfers unchanged to a different climate or location.
Plan the site before choosing dimensions
A below-grade greenhouse introduces questions that a surface greenhouse may not share to the same degree: excavation stability, water entry, drainage and the loads carried by the roof and supporting structure. The right design depends on local conditions. Use these questions to scope the work; they are not engineering specifications.

Why drainage and structural design need local answers
The bulletin includes sections on both interior and exterior drainage, underscoring that water management is part of its design. But a below-grade space can collect runoff or encounter groundwater, and the right solution depends on the particular site and a safe outlet. Do not treat the bulletin’s drainage headings as a site-specific drainage plan.
Likewise, the example pit depth does not tell you whether an excavation is stable, what retaining support it needs or how its roof should be designed. The available sources do not provide design loads, collapse protection, permit requirements, soil or groundwater assessments, or a construction safety plan for an unspecified location. Resolve these with applicable local authorities and qualified professionals before excavation.

A practical planning sequence
- Check the site and rules. Establish applicable permits and local requirements, and obtain qualified advice on soil stability, groundwater, excavation safety and retaining design.
- Map winter sunlight. Identify the local winter sun path and obstructions, then decide whether the proposed orientation can provide solar access. Treat the bulletin’s hemisphere-based orientation as a starting point to assess, not an automatic answer.
- Plan water routes. Consider runoff, groundwater, interior and exterior drainage, and where collected water can be discharged safely.
- Design the structure for local loads. Have roof span, supports and materials assessed for conditions such as local wind and snow exposure. Do not infer structural capacity from an example roof description.
- Plan ventilation and upkeep. Determine how air will move under local heat and humidity conditions, and make glazing, vents and growing areas accessible for inspection and maintenance.
What the evidence does not establish
The Benson Agriculture and Food Institute bulletin is marked as revised in 2002 and identifies La Paz as its design location. The 2023 article record by Freddy Armijos-Arcos and a coauthor concerns a proposed agronomic design for high-Andean páramo conditions, but its full article was not available for verification here. Neither source establishes universal construction dimensions, performance figures, temperature outcomes, savings or yields. For an actual build, site conditions and locally applicable engineering, safety and permitting requirements must guide the design.
